I hope I understand your question correct - If you install a esl flagged mod it will change your saves in a way, that remains of this mod will stay in these saves. If you remove that mod from your modlist later the save has a high chance to dysfunction. But of the 254 plugin limit a esl version would probably be preferred, esl files not counting to the limit. The esp was mainly for game versions not supporting esl.
I've never had this mod installed before, and I never remove mods from the game. Therefore, I understand that if I install the ESL-flagged version of this mod for the first time and, of course, I do not uninstall it - nothing bad can happen?
For those who have a problem with the broken tower, I managed to get the patch to work without breaking the map, for it to work you have to have the following order of mods.
I get a broken tower with the 2nd floor having half the wall missing. My load order seems okay with this being after interesting exterior and castle volkihar rebuilt.
Sorry, I´m late to answer, didn´t check on that mod quite a while. I did not play the questline so far - but the tower (covering the real watchtower) added in Castle Volkihar Exterior overhaul is disabled in this patch, the CK shows all markers and triggerboxes from Dawnguard and CVRebuilt. I was assuming nothing is misssing, also I found no conflicts in SSEdit on that behalf ? Can you tell me, what I had missed to notice ?

Several of the added rocks and ice features from Interesting Exteriors clip with the boat added by Volkihar Travel at the Ice Water Jetty dock, as well as the boats and ship in the dock behind the castle.
Thank you. I uploaded a patch for CVIE - CVR - VR , you may give it a try - I did not notice rocks or ice in the boat at Icewater Jetty, maybe there is another mod editing that area. Moved the boat at CV main gate and the ice float in the dock and did not see any ice or rocks in the boats anymore. Checked and cleaned with SSEEdit , but there could be persistent records, so may require a new game.
My mistake - I must have misread the message in SSedit, when checking - it did note, form ids had to be compressed first, before eslfying. Therefor I leave it as an esp. Sorrry for all inconvinience.
