Construction done for now, carry on.  Do use the new patch, it is strongly recommended.

I still need to re-do the Inigo LE front page, and back-port this patch to LE, but things are otherwise about done.

I got the patch up on Beth.net for XBox users, finally.  My old PC really didn't want to run the SE Creation Kit.

Hey, I noticed that the tutorial on how to fix this Inigo riding bug after it has already been triggered got deleted, sooo checked the WayBackMachine and I found it. I thought it might be useful to post this tutorial here easy to see, as many people seem to be looking for it. Sadly, I can't copy the whole thread around this tutorial - that would be way too much, but here is a link to parts of it that were saved by the WayBackMachine.

The tutorial was posted on 02 March 2021 by Thallanar1170 on The Nexus Forums. The author included links to screenshots, which are still up at the moment (Dec 2023). You can follow the tutorial even without those screenshots, but they seem to be quite handy, so I will link them here as well.
IMPORTANT: I simply copied the tutorial made by Thallanar1170. I can't guarantee you that it works, I can't answer any questions regarding it and I can't & won't take any responsibility if this messes up your save game. You might want to make a back-up of your most recent save before following this tutorial.

    1. Open ReSaver, and select your latest save game. If you are unsure, filter by date and look for the newest one.
    2. Once your save game is loaded, search "Inigo" in this box and select "Inigo.esp".
    3. Click "Script Instances", open "I", then click "InigoStatusQuestScript".
    4. Look for "InigoRef_var", and note the REF ID.
    5. Next we need to find the correct REF ID to plug into the ID field we found in the step above. Under "Script Instances" (where all the letters are) open "A".
    6. Under "A", click the one with Form ID "xx008ae9" (the 'xx' refers to the order you have the Inigo.esp loaded in your load order. This is different for everyone). Far to the right you will see the ID you need.
    7. Copy the entire ID (minus the part where it says "ID") and go back to "InigoRef_var" and replace the ID with the one you copied from the step above.
    8. Then, locate "horseAllowedHere" and set it to "True".
    9. Lastly, go to "File" at the top of the screen then click "Save".
    10. It will prompt you that the save file already exists and asks to overwrite. Click "Yes".
    11. Close the program, and load up your latest save in Skyrim. Once loaded, either command Inigo to mount his horse or get on your own, and he will (hopefully) get on his own.

I hope this helps! Oh and thank you for the mod!

      Thanks!
Yeah, while I think ReSaver may back up the files automatically, always better safe than sorry.  I would always back up a file or save before doing any kind of surgery like this to it.  And I think that was said somewhere in that thread that this is from.

Edit:  Since this, Nexus has come out with the highly useful comments search ability.  If you want the full context, while I can no longer link to posts of the past, you can use the comments search feature under the Inigo mod comments.  Search for 'Thallanar1170'.  The first post that comes up should be my brightly colored warning post about the original problem (22 November 2020, with a huge number of replies under it).  If you scan down under that to a post by Thallanar1170 on 02 March 2021, that is the instructions on how to fix the problem once it has happened using ReSaver (as copied above).  And if you want to read above and below that for added context, you can.  But DON'T read everything!  We didn't know what was happening, and went off in some wrong directions, and a number of people with unrelated problems posted under that thread as well.

Hi, I recently checked on the Inigo mod page. To understand this mod, is this compatible with AE and I don't understand which mod file to get.

This and Inigo are compatible with SE, AE, AE + free CC, and AE + Paid CC, so any version of Skyrim after LE (which is listed as a separate game and has a separate Inigo).  I will be back-porting a version for LE eventually, but that is just little fixes, no big important ones, so I got distracted and haven't gotten that done yet.

As for which file to chose, the Main file is the regular .esp version, your standard patch/mod that takes up a mod slot.  If you intend on having hundreds of mods, and every mod slot is precious, then you will want the Optional ESPFE version.  That does exactly the same things as the main version, but the file has been esl-ified, so it does not take up a mod slot that a bigger mod could be in.  That is just a trick you can do with Skyrim SE/AE small mods that you couldn't do with LE.  If you are new to modding, and don't intend to go over 200 mods and patches on this playthrough, just pick the Main version.  If you decide you want to go further for later playthroughs, you can always dump that, and get the ESPFE one then, by which point you would be more familiar with what that means.

Oh, and if you need to make a patch to something else dependent on this patch for some reason, you would want the Main .esp version, as esl-ified patches do not like to depend on each other.

If you don't understand all that, just get the Main version.  It is the main one for a reason.

Hello! I'm not sure if I should post this here, but I really could use some help.

I've read and followed the instructions on the sticky, but my inigo still wouldn't mount his horse. When I tell him to ride, he will follow me on foot, and his horse will teleport to his side from time to time. And I think this might be something different from the old riding bug, because:

    a. I had installed this patch before I met Inigo during the playthrough, so theoritically the bug shouldn't be triggered.
    b. The ref ID of InigoRef_var was already the right one, and the value of horseAllowHere was true.

My guess is that inigo might be incompatible with horse overhaul mod(I'm using the latest a horse's life), but that also seems unlikely because I've checked the post section of that mod, there is zero content about inigo. All in all, I don't have any clue. Can you help me?

You are correct, having installed the patch before meeting him should have it working for you.

You are also correct that complex horse mods can indeed interfere with his riding system.  His riding system was set up to take the horse from, and hand the horse back to, the vanilla riding system.  Usually if there is a problem, it just means he doesn't see the horse for it to be given to him, but there are other riding mods where the hand off does work, but it ends up with his horse put back in the prey faction, so everything targets it.  So I could see there being a problem with another mod that tries to control horses.

So, first off, does that mod have a way to release a horse from its control?  The idea being, to give Inigo a horse as close to vanilla as possible, and only controlled by his own systems, not by those of any other mod.  Just like controlling Inigo with another mod can break his brain, controlling his horse with another mod can break his riding system.  It could be preventing him mounting, or a host of other problems.  I don't know anything about that mod, but your implication was that it still had influence over Inigo's horse after you gave it to him.  Could you tell me a bit more about what it does?  Give me the link to it?  Cosmetic mods or those that just change horse stats shouldn't be a problem, but ones that control horse behavior, and don't let go when the horse leaves your ownership certainly could be a problem.  Also, just because there is no mention of a problem under that mod does not mean there isn't an incompatibility.  You did say it was a newer version of that mod, and there always has to be a first person who not only has a problem, but actually reports it in a visible location.

      Other questions:
When you gave Inigo the horse, did he ever mount it and name it, or is it still "Inigo's trusty steed"?
Was the horse from a mod, or was it from one of the vanilla stables or Frost?  (If from a mod, try having him give up the horse, and give him one from the vanilla stables.)
Does that mod let go of the horse when it leaves your ownership?  (Giving it to a follower, or otherwise.)  You may need to ask that under the horse mod.

The answers to all that will help me determine what is going on, though from the hints so far, I suspect that the other mod is not letting go of the horse, so Inigo's riding system can never take proper control of it, so he can't ride.  Convenient Horses, for instance, does work with Inigo as it only keeps control of horses that you own.  Once you hand off ownership, that mod will try to set the horse back to vanilla status so that other mods can interact with it, and then Inigo's riding system can take control of it.  (There are occasional minor and fixable problems with the hand off due to script timing, but it works fine the majority of the time.)  If this new mod tries to control horses all the time, whether you own them, or not, and does not have a way to release a horse from its control, then yes, it might be considered incompatible with Inigo (or at least with his riding).

So get back to me with that info/answers to those questions, and hopefully we can figure out what is going on.

Thanks for your reply! This is very helpful!

I can confirm that the mod was still trying to track the horse even after I gave it to Inigo. At least, I could still see it listed in the mod's MCM menu. However, the horse didn't return after Inigo disowned it. In fact, it became completely uninteractable and wouldn't move on its own. That said, it would still fight during a dragon attack.

      As for your other questions:

      • No, Inigo never mounted or named the horse.
      • The horse is from a vanilla stable, and I'm pretty sure it's a vanilla horse. The mod does add an extra horse to each stable, but the one I gave to Inigo was the first horse I purchased from that specific stable, so I believe it’s the original vanilla one.
Here’s the link to the mod’s page:
      https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/146675?tab=description
It’s a brand-new mod, so I guess you're right, I might be one of the first to encounter this issue. I’ll go ahead and make a post about it:)

Oh, ouch...  It still showing up in the other mod's systems, and then not returning to vanilla state OR to the control of that mod after Inigo let it go is, as they say, a BAD SIGN.  Inigo's systems will try to return a horse to vanilla status (and the ownership of the player) when he disowns it.  My best guess is, the horse mod did not let Inigo's riding system take full control of it, which is why he could not ride it, but it got enough control for him to accept the 'gift'.  When his system tried to return it and let go, the horse mod did not take back full control of the horse, but still had partial control, preventing vanilla systems from taking over either, leaving the poor horse in script limbo.

If I was a betting person, I would hazard that Inigo's riding system is not the only one that will have problems with this mod.  Lots of other complex custom voiced followers have their own riding systems that do things similar to what Inigo's does, but each a bit different, of course.  Lucien, and many others may also have problems.  Inigo tends to be a bit of the canary in a coal min with things like this, being one of the oldest really complex follower mods, and one of the more widely used still.  Also, keep in mind, this problem may have a timing factor with when the scripts try to hand the horse off.  You could try giving him a different horse (being sure to save first, as it may have the same fate as the last).  If it works sometimes, but breaks others, then there is likely a script timing factor involved.  Not that that helps you much, but if so, it would be worth reporting to that mod creator, and if you can get a horse fully working and not tracked by that mod once, just don't change it, and hopefully it will continue to work for the rest of your playthrough.  That may not be possible though.

I don't have time right now to read through that mod, but I will later.  If the author thought they had a system in place to hand horses off to follower mod control and such, it isn't working properly.  If there was an oversight, and they do not have a way for their mod to completely release control of a horse when it leaves your ownership, then that mod would just be incompatible with any complex follower mod with a custom riding system until they do have a way to let the horse go.

If you get any pushback, about the symptoms of this being like those of the original Inigo riding bug, point out that you verified the ref ID of InigoRef_var was already the right one, and the value of horseAllowHere was true, and you had the Inigo Official Patch installed before you ever met Inigo, so the problem should not be possible.  (Not to mention still seeing the horse being tracked by the horse mod after you tried to give it to Inigo.)  There might have been other users who already had this problem, but did not report it because of the similarity of symptoms to the old bug, and did not have the mod knowledge to check the InigoRef_var and such as you did.  What it boils down to is, the break point where scripts hand the horse off from you to Inigo is one of the more fragile points in the system, so when things go wrong, the symptoms are more likely to show up at such fragile moments, whether the problem started earlier, or not.  This problem just happens to manifest at the same break point as the old riding bug did.  You really did good verifying it the way you did, that saves me a lot of work.

Please tell me of any developments.  I will try to read up on that mod later.

Edit:  I really don't have time for this, but I just had to look...  I haven't read all of it yet, much less the articles, but I did see this under Compatibility:
A Horse's Life is a fully standalone system that disables Skyrim’s vanilla horse mechanics, making it incompatible with other mods that alter horse functionality.
That right there may be a problem for a lot of followers with custom riding systems, built to interact with the vanilla system, which will be disabled.  It may be one the horse mod author can fix, with more complex handoff procedures, I am not sure.  If they can think of anything that can be done on the Inigo side, without messing up Inigo's own system, or compatibility with everything else when that mod is not present, I am all ears.  But I am also NOT the Inigo coder, and the coder who did the riding system is not likely to want to rework things for one mod, however nice.  So if it involves scripts, any patch is likely to have to be on the Horse's Life side.

I made a post in the mod page and got a reply from the mod author. He said that follower mods may need to be set up in a some specific way to be compatible with his mod, so I guess I’ll just travel on foot with my cat friend this time:)

Nevertheless, at least I figured out what is going on, so thanks a lot!

Yeah, I read that.  I don't see how riding systems built to interact with the vanilla system can work with the vanilla system removed, so it sounds like he is saying that the riding systems of other mods would have to be rebuilt just for compatibility with his mod and nothing else.  That definitely isn't happening with Inigo, and probably not most custom followers with custom riding systems.  I will write up a statement of incompatibility, and try to get that put up on the Inigo front pages as soon as I can.  It may take some days, those front pages are a pain to edit, and life is complicated right this moment.

Hi i found a problem with inigo and looking for help. I told inigo to open a chest which it was lock. He opened it and pick it all items(or maybe he take all items because I pressed E twice). The problem is when I take those items from his inventory it will count as stealing. Is there any fix?

Sorry for not responding sooner.  Too much to do, not enough time.

That is a vanilla problem with follower inventories when you make them carry more than their carry capacity.  They can do it, but it messes up the trading in such a way that some items you get from them are marked stolen.  If you take any really heavy items that you don't care about that they looted accidentally off them and drop them, if you get them down below their max carry weight, that should fix the problem for the rest of what they are carrying, hopefully.  Otherwise, you can use the console to make him drop the heaviest items until he is down below the limit.  Using the console to have him drop them may get around the problem of the trading menu marking them as stolen. (Have him drop them in a player home, or somewhere else you won't cause a riot with NPCs picking stuff up, or have them marked as stolen because the area is owned by someone else.)

To avoid the problem in the future, there is a mod by the coder who helped with Inigo.  It is for Portable Containers that you can fill (and set to a lower carry weight than the contents) and can give followers to carry, without them using the contents.  That way they can carry a lot for you, but they will still be below their max, so things they pick up won't be marked stolen (as long as you don't let their inventory pile up again).  You can also just carry the containers yourself, with the weight set lower.

      Hopefully that will help.

Hey I have another problem with inigo. He sometimes attack my followers at end of fight and I have to disable and enable inigo in console to fix it. He most of times attack serana. (is it because she uses the magic that added by mod through SPID? )

This is a common problem when followers use damaging spells that have an AoE, like Fireball, but most notably, Chain Lightning, which Serana eventually learns. I'm pretty sure you can shortcut the problem by using Inigo's Whistle. There's also a mod to bind the whistle to a key, if you want, which makes it more convenient if you plan on having Inigo often.

More recent followers could have systems to bypass this issue, or it could be simply that followers that can be managed with a framework like AFT don't have this problem. Inigo cannot and must rely on the system it comes with for his brain not to break.

But as I said you can simply bind the whistle to a key, say V, and whenever Inigo gets a bit too feisty in response to friendly fire, you can stop him in his tracks with it. Pretty reliable from what I remember.

A whole set of separate races!  I fixed all of the instances of that that I found, but there is still a chance I missed some.  Inigo has a LOT of lines to go through the conditions on all of them.  So if you find one I missed, document it as well as you can (knowing his exact lines helps me to find them... at least a little).  I will still add more to this patch, if more things that need fixing and that I can fix with it come to my attention.  I can't promise I will always be fast about it, unless it is a severe problem, but I will add any little fixes like the line conditions and typos, etc., to the list for the next iteration.   Langley now spreads equal-opportunity rudeness!

Wow, that is a lot!  I knew I was missing some of those, but hadn't found them yet, brute-forcing my way through his entirely dialogue tree is not the best way to go about things.  That is very detailed and helpful information.  Obviously, you are someone very familiar with xEdit.  If you wouldn't mind sending me a mini-patch, with just those changes, then I can compare them to the base file, and verify they are all appropriate, then add them into the main patch.  I am sure most of them are, but there are a few rare instances, like his asking female Argonians about laying eggs, where he might not ask that of a vampire (thus undead) Argonian.  I would have to run that one by Gary.  Most though are very good catches.

If you find other stuff like that, or just other errors, like misspellings, missing words, etc. that I haven't caught, please do the same thing, save them up, and send them to me in a batch to be added.  I did say when I first went live with the IOP that I would be very glad to take reports of things I could fix.  You are just the first one to respond with so much and in such detail.    I will PM you where to send the mini-patch file.

Well, first tell me what DBM_Inigo is and does (and a link wouldn't be a bad idea).

I fear I can't keep track of every single Inigo interaction or appearance patch out there.  Depending on what it does, that will determine how it interacts with the Inigo Official Patch.

If DBM_Inigo alters his appearance, then it likely affects the Inigounique NPC file.  Two of the fixes in the Inigo Official Patch also affect that file, and whichever patch comes lower in the LO will overwrite the other.  That is why there is so much discussion (in the posts below) about forwarding the changes in the IOP into any appearance patches, as that is the only reasonable way to get the effects of both.  I explain why and how to do this in the previous posts and on the front page.  Ideally, if you could get the person who posted the other patch to forward those changes, that would help a lot of other people as well as you.  If they are no longer available, you would have to forward the changes yourself.  If you put the other patch after the IOP without forwarding those bits, then those fixes won't go into affect.  In one case, that will just prevent the fix for his discharging weapons too fast from working (not critical), but in the other case, the protection against the riding bug will not go into affect, and if you also use RaceMenu, then there is a good change of Inigo's whole riding system failing, so that was a fairly important fix.  If you put the IOP after the other patch, those fixes will take affect, but some changes from the other patch may be overwritten.  Depending on exactly what it does, that may cause problems with it.  If you forward the changes into it, then you can put the other patch after the IOP, and have it work, while still keeping the important changes from the IOP.  You don't have to forward all of the IOP, only the changes to the Inigounique NPC record.

As for the LOTD Inigo Patch, is it the one that gives him a room with items from his adventures copied there?  If so, that shouldn't affect the Inigounique record, and it shouldn't really matter whether you put it before or after the IOP, as long as it comes after Inigo, of course.  Probably better to have the IOP come after it though, just to be safe.  (And don't try to tell Inigo to live there, that will mess him up.  You can safely tell him to relax there though, that is fine, and he will 'live' there until next called for.)  Certain conditions must be met in order for his quest to start, and you may meet those conditions quickly in one playthrough, then not for a long time in the next.  A difference in timing there is not a sign of anything wrong, really, just a difference in playing from one playthrough to another.  If you want me to list the main conditions that must be met for his quest to start, and what often delays it for people on subsequent playthroughs, just tell me.

I hope that answers your questions.  If DBM_Inigo does something other than what I assumed, tell me and include a link, and I will try to answer your question with that information.

yeah its just his display room patch, I use 0 replacers
I keep him as his vanilla original self

      I use LotD v6 also

I would love to know how to start his main questline, with this patch active, because I never ran into this problem before so it got me completely confused haha

and I don't use house managerments unless its actually VANILLA skyrim NPCs and I use NFF for them only

Oh, you mean DBM_Inigo is the name of the display room patch?  I was not aware of that.  In that case, there should be nothing to forward or worry about.  The Inigo Official Patch shouldn't conflict with that in any way.  In fact (as listed in the IOP details) the IOP contains a change that makes Inigo more compatible with LOTD in general (there was an odd quest conflict that could happen before with a story manager setting).

The IOP does not change how or when Inigo's quest starts at all.

In order for his quest to start, you need to have heard his brother's name from him (ask about his past repeatedly, ask about his brother when mentioned, continue until he says that is his story).  The first time that can be done standing anywhere safe, but after the first pass, if you missed his brother's name and want to go through it again, just sit down with Inigo somewhere safe, like an Inn or player home, and you will have the option to ask him about his past again.  After that, you need to be out in the main world space (not indoors, not in a city or dudgeon, not on Solstheim, etc.) and not in a clearable area (so not a bandit camp, dragon lair, etc.).  You need to be not fighting, or riding.  If you get on a carriage, or mount up on horses the moment you leave a city, or fast travel, that can delay his quest starting by quite a bit.  Really, the fastest way to get it to start, after you hear his brother's name, is to go for a leisurely walk with Inigo down the road away from a town.  A good opportunity to pick some ingredients.  Barring incidental fights, his quest should start fairly soon if you do that.  If you do get interrupted by something, don't worry, just try again later and it will reset.

Hopefully that will get you sorted out.  Often, once people have heard all about him on their first playthrough with him, they don't realize that they need to hear it all again on subsequent playthroughs in order to trigger the quest.  Either that, or their travel/exploration behavior changes once they are familiar with an area.

Had no idea this existed until today - was reading a comment on reddit about what old mods people couldn't do without, where Inigo was (of course) mentioned, and thought to check the Nexus page - and found the link to this.

Since it was just an ESP and I am up against a limit on the number of masters due to Requiem, I copied all the changes into the 2.4C Update ESP, recreated the perk there, and pointed the NPC record at the new perk.

Thank you for continuing to update my favorite follower.

Donations sent to you and (again) to Gary.

Yep, that is just fine.  That is why I included the xEdit screen shots for those that wanted to forward the changes for another mod that affected Inigo's NPC record, or for people like you able to just merge it with the main file.  Eventually, when SBC updates Inigo, the changes will be included in the main file then, of course.  Some of them already are included in V3, and I am just releasing them in this patch because of how long V3 is taking.  (The small quality of life bits.)  I did post an ESPFE version here, but that of course still depends on Inigo.  I was not aware that there was some limit to how many mods you can have depending on other mods.

You will, however, have to keep an eye out, and when I eventually update the patch and add to it, you will have to add those changes to your version of the file as well (if you want what is in the changes).

Thank you for the donations, we both appreciate it, though it is never necessary, of course.

Requiem uses an internal patcher called the "Reqtificator" to create an overall patch esp for other mods. As any other esp, it has a limit of 256 masters, which is where I ran into trouble. Unfortunately, while not all mods in a list are required to be masters for the patch, any mod that includes a changed record is, including espfe files - so in a large mod list you can run up against the limit unless you merge mods to reduce the number of masters. I didn't want to try putting Inigo into a merge - too easy to break something.

Ah, that makes sense then.  Yeah, you do NOT want to be merging Inigo with anything other than his own patch, or another approved add-on for him.  He is really complex.  Hopefully you can keep under the limit by merging patches and small mods with their masters.  You are learning a lot about modding along the way.    Go just a bit further down that road, and you will be making mods when you can't find what you want from existing mods.

The problem being, this patch is built on being dependent on absolutely nothing other than Inigo, and we want to keep it that way so that the maximum number of people can safely use it.  Also, that is not the only edit that the patch makes that would interfere with the replacers.  The edits that fix the fairly severe riding bug are subtle changes to Inigo's starting inventory (see images), and those would also interfere, and can not be propagated the way that you mention.  Basic mesh and texture replacers for all Khajiit should still work fine, it is only replacers that seek to change Inigo's specific appearance that run into a problem.  All they (or someone) need to do is forward the changes from the IOP using xEdit, then make sure the altered appearance mod comes after the IOP in your LO.  But I know it can be hard to get the creators of those add-ons to make those changes so long after they were posted.

Are the changes to inventory affected by any scripts? Skypatcher can add items to inventory without technically touching the NPC. I can understand how it gets complicated, especially with the riding bug. That freaking bug makes me scared to even open Inigo's inventory to give him armor and arrows. Tempering his weapons is just a total no-go. As for forwarding changes, I can certainly do that, but for some reason I still don't understand, I have to remove the esl flag from the appearance mod for it to work.

Well, some of the starting items in his inventory need to have a faction rank reference changed.  If it was just a mater of adding an item, then as you say, it wouldn't be a problem, but given the items are already in his inventory in the Inigo base-mod, and the starting faction rank has to be altered in order to block the riding bug, I don't see a way to propagate that using Skypatcher.  Not to mention the patch needs to be available to everyone, including console users, not just mod users advanced enough to use Skypatcher.  As for them being affected by any scripts...  Well, not that we know of, but that gets into the very convoluted guts of the riding bug problem that we still don't fully understand.  Inigo does not depend on either SKSE64 or RaceMenu, and the scripts in his riding package do not normally interact with those items in his inventory, but somehow, with SKSE64 and Racemenu present, that faction rank being set the way it was originally (which does no harm at all in the base game) upsets an SKSE64 script package in RaceMenu, and that does... something... that triggers Inigo's riding package to latch onto Inigo's starting items, rather than HIM, which is what causes the riding bug if anything disturbs those items at all.  So scripts are involved.  Somehow.  A very helpful coder (hairahcaz, who I mention in the credits), who understands SKSE64 MUCH better than I ever could, was the one who suggested the change to that faction rank to fix the problem, so that the other script package couldn't latch onto Inigo, and upon testing, he was 100% correct, and if applied at the time Inigo is installed, it completely fixes the problem.

Anyway, the end result is, if you install the patch along with Inigo (and forward the changes to anything else that changes his NPC record) then you really don't need to fear accessing Inigo's inventory, or upgrading his items, any longer.  It should be safe.

As for the ESL flag, I recall reading that there was a problem with an ESL being dependent on something else that was also ELS flagged.  Something complicated involving when the ESL flagged items run in the LO.  And the xEdit people know this, of course.  The starting items faction rank changes should be easy to forward without dependence, but you are likely getting the appearance mod dependent on the IOP when you try to forward the addition of the spell cost perk that fixes his discharging weapons so fast.  If that never bothered you much, you can just leave the perk off (thus avoiding dependence, and allowing the appearance mod to keep the ESL flag), or if you want to keep that fix (much less critical than the riding bug fix) you can copy over the custom perk that I created for that as well, so that you can add it to Inigo's NPC record without having to refer to the IOP.  If you do that, then you should be able to add the perk without requiring dependence on the IOP, and allowing the appearance mod to keep the ESL flag.  It all depends on how important having one more mod slot is to you, and how comfortable with xEdit you are.    I only added the one custom perk, so it should be easy to find in the structure of the IOP.

I hope that helps it all make more sense for you.

Should I upgrade mid-play through from 1.1fe to 2.0fe if I'm on an older LOTD version 5.6.5?  Install and load under old patch or overwrite 1.1fe entirely?

When my wife got Inigo, he kept falling to his knees for a long time as if his brain glitched. Any idea what that could be? I asked her if NFF prompted to import Inigo (which would break his brain) but she thinks she didn't.

The version of LOTD is irrelevant, as the fix does not depend on it, and will help other things even if you didn't have LOTD.

Yes, you can update mid-playthrough.  The file name of the patch did change to something more general, due to the greatly expanded contents, so you can't just switch out the files.  Unless you want to rename the new patch to the name of the old patch file, then you could just exchange them, and the game won't notice anything missing.  Otherwise, yes, put the new patch after the old patch in the LO, and it will just overwrite the old patch, while adding all the new content.  If you tried to remove the old patch (it would have to be after adding the new patch after it, and making a new save) it wouldn't hurt anything, as the new patch contains all that the old one did, but the game will complain about removing a mod, etc.  I hope that is clear enough.

As for falling to his knees, that depends...  Was he complaining of terrible headaches?  If so, that is the start of his quest.  If not, it sounds like something external to this mod either staggered him, or reduced his health so far that he went into the 'bleedout' state.  He is essential, so he can't be killed that way, but he can be put into bleedout when his health gets too low.  Have her check for any cloak effects, or anything else that might be draining his health.  It is hard to speculate, given how many other mods there are out there, and all the things they do.  Does it only happen in combat?  Would it still happen if you were, say, in an Inn?  Also, there are a lot of other mods that could grab him that are not strictly follower management mods.  I would need a lot more information to make much progress on that, if what I have said so far doesn't lead her to figure it out.  If she still has the problem, have her post about it in as much detail as possible in the comments under the main mod, as that is where I do most of the tech support for it.

Thank you! I'm just returning to Skyrim after a few years and was pleasantly surprised to find this patch.
I hope you and SmarBlueCat are doing better. Last I checked in, life was beating up on both of you.
    Best wishes and thanks again!

Well...  I am not sure that "better" would be an accurate description.  The list of problems has reshuffled and shifted, but there is still quite the list of problems.  *wry smile*  Such is life, I suppose.  Thanks for the good wishes.    We could both use them.

Thanks for doing this and adding individual patches to all the various Inigo modification mods - that must have been a lot of work. It is crucial that people download your mod AND the individual patch for any appearance mods as you mentioned. Here is what may happen / has happened if this does not occur: endless error loop causing papyrus logs to quickly bloat in size, a brief stutter / pause at regular intervals e.g. every 10 seconds, and the biggest - Inigo will have a back or grey head but a purple body.

It sounds like you had the IOP after the appearance changer.  If you have it the other way around, the appearance changer wins, and while Inigo looks better, a few of the fixes from the Inigo Official Patch do not take effect (including the important riding fix).

The best way to go about it, as I think I say on the front page, is to forward the changes to the Inigo NPC record into the appearance changer, and have that after the IOP in your load order.  You can do that by altering the appearance changer file in xEdit.  If you (or I) create a separate patch, it would have to come after the appearance changer, and you run the risk of once again ending up with grey-face.  Ideally, the appearance changer creator would find out about this, and update their add-on with the changes, but some of those were made quite a while ago, and the authors are not responding.

I am not even aware of all of the Inigo appearance changers, so no, I am not creating the patched versions of them myself (though others may be doing so), but I am including detailed directions on how to forward the changes (see the previous post to yours), and the images for the IOP here are from xEdit, and show the specific changes that were made to the Inigo NPC record, as that is what needs to be forwarded, and those few changes are the only ones being overwritten by the appearance changers.  All the other fixes and tweaks in the IOP remain in effect.  If you failed to forward the perk, and add it to Inigo, the only difference would be that the fix for his discharging weapons too fast would not take effect.  It is the faction rank reference changes to several of Inigo's starting items that really need to be forwarded, as that is what prevents the riding bug.

I hope all of that made it more clear.  Once a few users of those appearance changers have made the changes for themselves, they may post something under those mods.  Properly though, I can't post their (the appearance changer author's) altered files without their permission, even though their files were based on Inigo.  And as I said, if I created a patch-patch to come after any of the appearance changers, there is a good chance it would have the same effect as having the IOP after the appearance changer in the LO, which is what you were experiencing.  If any of the appearance changers have specifically stated open permissions, then making the alterations to their file, and posting it, should be okay.  Otherwise, if the author can't be contacted, I fear users of those files are stuck forwarding the changes themselves.
