NOTICE: I made this mod because I noticed that the opposite gender animations were still in effect (which drives me batty) for Lydia, Jordis, Iona, Delphine and Irileth when I used Total Character Makeover. I posted this mod to save others the hassle of having to create an esp just to change base animations for these main characters. This mod works well with Total Character Makeover and vanilla NPCs.
KNOWN ISSUES:
1. This mod only works if it is activated before any character it affects is met for the first time. If this mod is activated and a save game is played where any of the above listed characters have already been met, those who have been met will still walk like men.
2. This mod uses an ESP. This means that it will cause a black face bug if it is loaded after any mod's ESP that changes an NPCs appearance. You will need to either: a. Place this mod's ESP before any mod's ESP that changes character appearance. or b. Change the opposite gender animation on the ESP that changes the character's appearance.
Hey, I don't know what this guy's deal was but if you install Save Unbaker the game will load the gender animation information from your plugins and not the baked one in the save, essentially making this work for all characters even if installed mid-save, enjoy!

For everyone coming to the comments looking for an easy way to make it work mid-save, if you install Save Unbaker the game will load the gender animation information from your plugins and not the baked one in the save, essentially making this work for all characters even if installed after you meet them, enjoy!
It seems this mod has not been updated since 2017 (and that is fine since it works great) but it would be cool if the author @montyj could link that mod in the description so it's not hidden here in the comments and people can know to make it work mid-save.
There is also another comment further down explaining how to get it working mid-save without a plugin using save editing, that is however a bit more troublesome, plus it's from 2016 so I wouldn't quite trust it if I were you.
use Wyre Bash. Literally none of these mods that fix this issue seems to work for and it is because there will always be esps overwriting the records.
In Wyre Bash you will need to go to tweak actors menu while building the patch and disable opposite gender animations. This the only solution that worked for me.
Thank you for creating this simple but very nice mod. I used a little work around to get the animations to work on already meet characters and a custom Lydia.
For example Lydia i am married to her and have her as a follower as well,
- Dismissed her as a follower (If you have them as a follower and don't do this you won't be able to get anyone to follow you ever again. because game will think you still have a follower.) - Console Commands to divorce her (Same as above, except you can't remarry.) - Save your game - Backup saves - Download SkyrimTools from the SSE nexus and launch ReSaver.exe - Open your last save file - Search for Lydia's Base ID A2C8E - Browse to "ChangeForms". - Find folder "NPC_" and delete it - Save the modified file, and load it ingame.
Game will now act like it's the first time you meet lydia and her animations will change, it doesn't delete her inventory, so what ever you give her will stay. Then you can marry again and so on. I did this on my 140 hour+ save with no problems or issues and Lydia still had her full inventory.
I tried the above steps and it doesn't seem to be deleting the NPC_ folder when I search for Lydia. I've tried right-clicking as well as the delete button and get a prompt to delete but it doesn't go away. Not sure what I am doing wrong.
I used the newest version of Skyrim Tools (called Fallrim Tools now) using the steps listed by Beyound and it worked perfectly. Thanks so much! Lydia's manly walk has been buggin me for a while now, lol.

I would love to be able to edit Lydia as well. I cannot find any save game editor on the entire Skyrim SE Nexus that you describe. There is no SkyrimTools. The only one that comes close and has a ReSaver is FallrimTools. Its only there to get rid of unattached scripts, and I cannot find anyway to select an NPC and edit/delete it.

Note: just learnt that changes in save file caused by using console commands on quests, i.e. 'getting a divorce', are actually removed when you use the resaver.exe's clean feature.
So I am very experienced Skyrim (Moded) player, like for a week haha. Well, I am new in modding, actual veteran in Skyrim vanilla, and I managed to do this process and worked, if I could, anyone with more experience can. Thanks a lot Beyound, because Lydia is very loved and sometimes I would marry other followers just because of this.

None of the mods available there worked. Then i found, from Mors feminine females, that Wrye Bash last version is patching all mods to remove the flag. (Check inside: tweak actor > opposite gender anims female and tweak races > force behavior graph gender female. Tick them both then build patch)
Just don't forget to follow Beyound tuto for an existing save. After the wrye bash patch i had to do it cause my sweet Borgakh was still stuck with her ugly animations.
Finally i'm done with this xD I don't get why it wasn't working before wrye bash as i checked with xedit many times to be sure nothing overwrites the last esp without the opposite gender flag tagged on...
seems we are leveling conjuration to 100 with all this necromancy in here. this method worked flawlessly for me, i am just wondering, are there any long term consequences to doing this? skyrim is known to screw you over a change you made 30 hours of gameplay ago.
Ironically, I found this mod whilst looking for an SE version of the one that turns the 'feminine' walk animations off entirely, but instead it's the opposite. Good job.
