Solid ideas. I think the numbers could use a bit of reworking so progress is a little more consistent and you aren't doubling spell effectiveness by going from oak to stone. I'm not going to use or open your mod but I'll give it a download and endorse for helping me pick better numbers that are divisible by 10.
The optional one does nothing and it doesn't revert back to vanilla visual effect so I went in to the creation kit. Simple fix:load the mod then go to the Magic section, select Magic Effect and find ArmorFFSelf 0-100, click on them and go to the Visual Effects and change Hit Shader to ShieldSpellFXS and done. remember to save the changes
Some NPC's have the mage armor perk...Tolfdir and Malyn Varen for example. Has anyone fought Varen with this mod installed yet? (Without the mod he would be armored at 80 with oakflesh and 120 with stoneflesh...with the mod he will be rocking 120 and 240 respectively.)
***The changes to mage armor provided by this mod...strength along with duration does not appear to affect NPC's...whether ally or enemy. The visual effects are present...but the doubled duration for sure does not affect them and it also seems...seems...the changes in strength do not as well. Any chance this could be remedied in an update? Thanks...love the mod.***
One that would have unarmed damage scale with Alteration Skill level while armors are active while not wearing armor and allow unarmed attacks to also scale with (And give skill levels to) one-handed weapon skills as well.
Could you perhaps add an alternate version that buffs unarmed damage some as well? It would make sense that a spell which hardens the caster's skin into wood/stone/metal/etc. would also lend itself to more unarmed damage.
You can hit the same armor rating in vanilla Skyrim wearing Heavy Armor, or even just Light Armor with a few perks in Smithing. Remember that wearing actual pieces of armor means that your true armor rating is 100 points higher than what's displayed in game (I've mentioned this in the description), whereas casting Oak/Stone/Iron/Ebony/Dragon flesh will show the true armor rating.
The whole point of this mod is to be able to achieve the same level of protection as wearing armors. Lowering the bonuses would make this impossible. I think the only problem is that it's tied to the Alteration skill which levels up too quickly if you're playing a pure mage.
It's not OP in the slightest. 1. You can easily make a character almost completely immune to magic attacks, even without investing a single point into perks. By getting proper quest rewards that boost magic resistance, and wearing only 2 enchanted items which can be bought that provide magic resistance, even top tier mage NPCs will barely scratch you. 2. It is possible to get 500+ DR without investing in smithing perks or enchanting. If you wear armor. 3. It's only possible to get 300 DR with Ebonyflesh with 3 perks invested into Mage Armor, let alone perks leading to it. Which is a drop in the bucket late/middle game vs higher tier enemies.
So... in most respects, it isn't really OP in the slightest. On normal difficulty for example, I've run into situations that despite using Ebonyflesh, to which I suffer from 2-3 Hit KOs from Raider Marauders, counting on their equipment.Ebonyflesh is what a level 60 or 70 spell? And even with all 3 mage armor perks, it's worthless against about 10% of the raiders you will encounter, let alone stronger foes at level 40+. Which means it will only get worse and worse after that.
In turn, Mage Armor Perks are worthless, as the benefit you get from not wearing armor when compared to the perk points needed to claim the Alteration tree, and then invest into Mage Armor itself, do not provide even remotely the defense needed to survive in the slightest mid game, let alone late game. What is the point of Alteration School of Magic if the primary benefit of it, is lack luster to say skill grinding your armor skills off mudcrabs? lol

@all
Make sure to load this after Ordinator or anything that alters the alteration perk tree.
Thanks
