I'm aware that there are some freezing and crashing issues with the game and with the application in general. This will likely require me to rewrite the application. Thankfully a lot has changed in the years, and I think I can now ship a small application (20MB) that can be a lot more intelligent and not only detect what version the user is on, but also offern multiple downgrade options. I can't start this work for a few days because I'm slammed with work and IRL stuff. But until then I'll sticky a post below about how to use Steam to downgrade.
if you guys are having trouble with the patcher for 1.6.640 and have the time you can just use the steam console to redownload the files, worked for me
just throw those into the steam console one at a time and it'll download them to your steamapps/common/content folder, replace ur skyrim stuff with that and ur good to go
@papabrando sorry i'm not very tech savvy, but when you mean replace, do you mean download and then move to the common/Skyrim Special Edition folder and chose the replace option?
Thanks a lot for your workaround. It seems to work perfectly. Changing only the exe didn't work, I got a crash at launch, but redownloading everything following your steps allowed me to : - Launch skyrim. - Load a save. - Make a new game.
I've yet to play longer but all my skse related mods are loading.
For the ones like me who don't know about Steam console or are having difficulties:
1. Open a command window "Run" by pressing «Win + R» and then enter the command: steam://open/console, and then press Enter. Will open console tab on your Steam
2. on the bottom will have a space for you to enter the code. Copy the code as papabrando said. It will download the files to your "steam/commom/content" folder. If you cannot find it, just seach on the steam folder: "depot 489831" "depot 489832" and "depot 489833" after download is done.
3. Replace your "steamapps/commom/Skyrim Special Edition" files with the ones in "depot 489831" "depot 489832" and "depot 489833" in that order.
Sure, open the Steam console first. You can do this by tiping on your browser seach field: steam://open/console. Once that is open, type the codes OP posted one by one. Then, head to this directory on your computer: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content. There is where the files have been downloaded. All you gotta do now is open the folders, extract them to your Skyrim folder and replace any existing file in case it asks to.
Sorry for the dumb question, but what would be the "steam console" ? Is it the "Launch Options" you get when you open Skyrim's properties under the "General" tab?
After downloading the 3 depots via the console, in the SteamApps/content folder, you've got the app_xxxx folder, inside there's 3 depots_xxxxx folders. Open the first depot_xxxxx folder, select everything in there, copy it. Then go to SteamApps/common/Skyrim Special Edition folder, and paste it. You'll be prompted to replace or ignore the files that are the same, replace all. Go back to SteamApps/content folder, do the same for the second depot_xxxxx folder, and then for the third.
You should be able to launch the game the usual way now
It worked for me, thank you! Altough I'm not fully understanding what I just did. Was it like a manual downgrade? Is works temporary or it'll work until next time bethesda feels like screwing us again with another random update?
I followed this to the letter but am not having success. Files were downloaded and loaded into the correct folders but I am still getting compatibility issues. Is this because I'm using SKSE to launch Legends of the Frost? What else do I need to do to get this working again?
Worked like a charm. Saved my life (and my load order).
For people having trouble, you're basically downloading all the 12gb of the game again. You just need to Copy the files you downloaded to your Skyrim installation folder (Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition) and replace everything. It's the 1.6.640 version, so make sure you have the correct SKSE version for it.
This one: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/30379?tab=files&file_id=323365
Then, make sure you stop the game from updating again by following this guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2872091273
Hi everyone, I desperately need help working through this process. I tried to follow every step really closely, I just finished copying and pasting (and replacing) the contents of each download_depot into my SkyrimSE folder, but I'm worried I did something wrong in this process.
Now, when I try to start the game from Vortex, the icon spins a little bit, then nothing happens. When I try to start the game from the SkyrimSE launcher, I get this error message: "The procedure entry point Steam UserStats could not be located in the dynamic link library E:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\SkyrimSE.exe"
Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong? What does this error message mean? I just started playing Skyrim again after like a year and started from scratch with modding like two days ago...now it feels like I'm on the brink of losing all that hard work and I feel like I'm gonna start freakin' crying!
Thought I didn't had to wait for the new SKSE64 and then for specific Library Mods to Update...
PS: When done copying, deploy your Mods through Vortex, so your Load Order is applied again. THEN You use LOOT and SSEedit, clean the re-dirtified original .esm files again to prevent more CTD's. Now your Modded SSE should be Pre-Update. Don't know if that helps for the ones who still have CTD's. I did it like this and now I'm playing again, as if nothing really happened.
For me it doesn't work. I mean, yeah, maybe it allows you to be 1.6.640, but then the 1.5.97 bomber doesn't work anyway, so screwed. edit: I was wrong, it's perfectly possible to go back to another version after that. ... So yeah it work.
@ethan9728 maybe vortex is trying to load the old exe for some reason? try redownloading skse and editing your executable paths if that's a thing on there, it works fine on mo2
Steam Data Base has been operating since 2012, Steam DB just lets you look at the changes of the files to a current game you own and essentially view the registry for all the "depot" files. (Where they store the old files on the Steam servers). From there, you grab the ID from it and this is essentially how our man got these links.
The only thing YOU need to do, is grab those three download links and paste them into your steam console one by one, then drag and drop into their proper location in your data folder to overwrite them. This essentially reverts all your updated files back to 1.6.640 which is what most people here are trying to accomplish.
This can be used with other games that have files that still exist in the depot and DB (Steam DataBase) is not a phishing site. It has operated this way for over a decade and really only needs your account to know what games you own. It also does not allow limited accounts to pull file links since this could all be easily used for piracy. The steam CONSOLE is native to your steam and can be opened via pasting this line in your browser or your windows + R command input: steam://open/console
Thanks so much! I was hung up on Misc.bsa so I just downloaded through the Steam console, replaced this one file, and re-ran the full patch. My game is running now. :D Thanks a ton to @halgari, @papabrando, and @calmaria330!!!! Have a wonderful day!
Sorry this is probably a stupid question, but after I've replaced my Skyrim files what do I do if and when I do eventually want the game to update back to the most current version? Like, in order to use the newest revision of the mod collection I use.
hey @papabrando thanks for your response! I reinstalled SKSE, then took a look at the path that SKSE has from Vortex to my game file, and it looks like it's deploying to the right place. However, when I look at those files, my SkyrimSE file shows that it has been modified at 2:46pm today (when I did the downgrade download), and it indicates that it is version 1.6.6 -- but the SkyrimSELauncher file has not been modified since 11:40am this morning (when the update happened). Do you think this is affecting things?
@papabrando maybe I'm missing something in those depot folders? In the second one "depot_489832" I see a file called "bink2w64.dll" and a data folder with some .ESMs and BSAs, all of which I have copied and pasted into my SkyrimSE folder. The third depot folder "489833" has the old SkyrimSE exe, which I've also copied and pasted into my SkyrimSE folder.
You saved me! After this event Id suggest Bethesda focus on their Skyrim 6 instead of patching the game that already has been patched to perfection by the community.
@ethan9728 the one with the bink file should have the launcher in it too so idk, maybe steam messed up ur download
edit: you could probably just use the downgrade patcher bestofboth worlds to convert it to the older version instead of downloading again, some guy said all you apparently needed from this was the meshes.bsa and misc.bsa
@papabrandao ahhh I see. I'm wondering if I was going too fast when I was putting those download_depots into the steam console. For instance, when I put in the first one into the console, the console then said "downloading depot 489831 (4271 MB)..." Once I saw that message, I just entered the second download_depot into the console. Should I be waiting until the console says "downloading complete" or something?
I'm putting them through the steam console again, but this time I'm just sitting here and waiting for it to say "download complete" or something before I go to put the second "download_depot" in...but it's been like 14 min already and it's only 4271mb, so maybe this isn't right either...
WAIT I THINK I REALIZED WHAT I'VE BEEN DOING WRONG HOLY s#*! HOLD ON STAY TUNED OH GOD
I'd already tried to do the normal patching approach, updated SKSE and updated Address Library, then I saw half my plugins were broken. Using this game as an escape from stress at the moment and I thought the 80+ hour, 640 mod playthrough I have going was kaput, which would have really fucked me for a while.
So tired of this aged company milking the life out of the IPs that made them beloved at the expense of their fans. Fucking Bethesda has been down the drain ever since they released this, the sale to MSFT and the release of Starfield is the writing on the wall, if we want to make ES6 any good we'll have to do it ourselves. It'll be chock full of Creation Club s#*! at this rate.
Reverted to SKSE 2.2.2 like I had before, reverted to my old Address Library plugin, and replaced my Skyrim stuff with the files downloaded here, and that fixed my game.
Hey thanks a lot, I'm on the middle of downloading the stuff so took the chance to come by a say thanks. Really can't understand why Steam forces users to keep games updated, GOG allows you to not just don't keep games updated but even revert to previous versions whenever you want. It's funny how Bethesda is "invested in their modding commynity yadda yadda yadda" and yet in 15 yeras they keep just not taking the little time it gets to just not f*#@ things up for their modding community xD
Edit: Yup worked like a charm, sending huge amounts of love your way :D
Do these files include the cc content that it prompts you to download ingame? or do i have to download that first and then replace the updated files with the ones you linked?
Dumb question. As far as I understand, mods don't affect the vanilla folders. So is it safe to deploy, install or uninstall mods and basically do what I have been doing so far after this solution?
For those of us that haven't used the console before. It gives you ZERO indication of what's going on after it says it's downloading 4+ GB. No progress meter etc. It's DLing, just give it time. Go to the skyrim folder in program files, where steam is installed, not the game. Find the content folder and look in there for DL progress.
Cause, you know, in 20 fucking 23 we STILL don't have progress meters in Steam.
Hello! Could you tell me what files exactly these commands download? That way I can look for them on my own. My internet is not very good and the download fails via console. And apparently this is the solution to all our problems lol
Thank you ...You are a God. This saved my 600 + modded game. I raise my glass in salute to you sir. P.S. don't forget to delete Data/MarketplaceTextures.bsa Data/_ResourcePack.bsa Data/_ResourcePack.esl or they will mess with LOOT. thanks again.
THANK YOU!! This worked like a charm. Man oh man, Bethesda, why? Why do you do this? LOL. Thanks to the modding community for keeping this game going, and keeping it awesome!
I tried the creation club fix but it says "Depot download failed : missing license for depots 1946183" Will we be without CC content now? I mean I guess I don't really mind unless does anyone know of any mods that require CC content?
Some people recommend to delete resourcepack.esl/bsa and MarketplaceTexture.bsa from the data folder...is it safe? it was an instruction for 1.611 to 1.59 but i use 1.611 to 1.64 only...do i have to do it?

is this mod still being updated to downgrade the latest update? I have followed the guides using the download depots to 1.6.1130 prior to using the downgrade patcher, it says ". . . patching complete, enjoy your game." install the SKSE version compatible to the 1.5.97 downgrade, use SKSE Loader to launch but Skyrim SE does not go past the Main Menu. After clicking on play nothing happens. What gives? please help.
Nope I have been hoping they would but they havent. I am not interested in the depot method. I am tired of jumping hoops to play SSE because Beth wont leave SSE TFA and just move on.
So if you are looking for a guide specifically to downgrade using "Best of Both Worlds" downgrader. I had to change the version to 1.6.1130.0 using the guide below in order to use the Best of Both Worlds 1.6.1130.0 to 1.5.97 patcher as I don't think one exists for the current version of Skyrim. I just did it by changing the version using this guide posted on reddit.:
A comprehensive guide to downgrading Skyrim.PC SSE - ModI've noticed that there is a lot of guides on how to downgrade your game, but non that break it down in a fully comprehensive way. So i have decided to take it upon myself to explain how to do it and which version you might want.So lets get started. Before we begin, i must explain what each version is, so starting with the time of writting:1.6.1170 is currently the latest version of Skyrim as of 24/01/2024, this may be subject to change, but for now this is the latest version.1.6.1130 is the version from 05/12/2023 the Marketplace update.1.6.640 is the version from September 2022 and is the final version before the Marketplace update in Dec. 2023.1.5.97 is the final version of special edition from Dec. 2019 before the AE update in 2021.Now that's out of the way lets begin.First make sure that your Skyrim is fully up to date, to make sure it is you can verify integrity of Skyrim's game files.Open steam, then from the library section, right-click on Skyrim and select Properties.Select the Local files tab and click the verify integrity of game files.Once thats done you can being the downgrading process.Press your windows key and R at the same time. Then type steam://nav/consoleThis will open the steam console, and from here you will be to download older versions of skyrim. To Downgrade from 1.6.1170 to 1.6.1130 the codes are: download_depot 489830 489831 3737743381894105176 download_depot 489830 489832 4341968404481569190 download_depot 489830 489833 2442187225363891157
Types these in to the steam console and make sure you download them one at a time and not all at once, wait for the download to be complete before moving on to the next code.Once all Three are downloaded, open Steam, then steamapps and content, then open the folder numbered 489830. Open it and you will see folders numbered after the codes you used in the steam console. Open these and copy and paste the files and folders into the Skyrim folder and the Skyrim data folder. Replace when asked. From here you can run the latest version of the downgrade patcher to version 1.5.97 or the best of both worlds patcher if you have any AE content installed. Link Provided below.https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/57618?tab=filesDon't forget to download backport extended esl support mod https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/106441 to prevent any ctds related to ussep or any mods with the updated esl file format. Now if you want to go further back to the pre marketplace version of Skyrim, version 1.6.640. then this is what you do.EDIT: There isn't much point of going that far with it. 1.6.640 is not recommended to downgrade to UNLESS you already have a working load order on 1.6.640 and updated by mistake. It is not recommended to downgrade this far. I am only leaving it here in case people want to downgrade to it for whatever reason. Skip to the end for the 1.5.97 version of USSEP if you fullly downgraded back to 1.5.97. (Not needed if you use Best of Both Worlds)Download the 1.6.640 version of skse. https://skse.silverlock.org/beta/skse64_2_02_02.7zNow once you downgraded from 1.6.1170 to 1.6.1130, downgrade again from 1.6.1130 to 1.6.640 aka the version before the December 2023 update.Once more open the steam console as shown above and type:download_depot 489830 489831 3660787314279169352 download_depot 489830 489832 2756691988703496654 download_depot 489830 489833 5291801952219815735Again download these one at a time, then copy and paste the files into the Skyrim folder same as before.Once thats done remove the resources files in the skyrim data folder and the marketplace.textures. Becasue this version does not support the marketplace and you are done. Back on the pre marketplace update version of Skyrim.Download the backport extended esl support mod https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/106441 in case of any ctds related to updated mods with the new file format, and done. Now if you want to use the Best of both world patcher on the 1.6.640 version or if from here you want to go even further back to 1.5.97, then here are links to the versions of the downgrade patcher.Best of Both 1.6.640 to 1.5.97: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/57618?tab=files&file_id=318087And Full patcher 1.6.640 to 1.5.97: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/57618?tab=files&file_id=318050Make sure that the resources.bsa and resources.esl are removed and the marketplace.textures are also removed before you run the downgrade patchers otherwise it won’t work probably.Hopefully this helped and if theres is any errors here or you would like to add something please post it in the comments. Thank you and happy modding!1.5.97 version of USSEP: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/266?tab=files&file_id=209150For those who fully downgraded to 1.5.97.
Please note I scoured the internet and did trial and error using posts on this thread to get it working for me. I don't deserve any credit, nor am I a person who knows anything about modding. Just spitting my limited amount of knowledge hoping it helps someone! Also note that you don't need to have any specific version if you use the download depot files. If you use those files to replace the files in the skyrim special edition folder it will change the skyrim you have installed to that version. I know this because I changed the version of skyrim multiple times today.
Also wanted to point out that I saw a couple of posts saying that the downgrader patcher isn't working for them but they clearly were using the wrong one. If its the "best of all worlds", it doesn't change the version of skyrim you have, just the files. If it is the "fullpatcher" changes your version and the files. Also take care to choose the downgrade patcher for what you are looking for. If it says "Best of both worlds 1.6.1130.0 to 1.5.97" you have to have skyrim version 1.6.1130.0 installed before the patcher can be used. same for the full patchers.
Finally, I would recommend saving a copy of all your skyrim files in case another update happens. Hope this helps.
IF THIS DOESN'T WORK FOR ANYONE, I HAVE A COPY OF MY 1.5.7 BEST OF BOTH WORLDS PATCHED GAME FOLDER ARCHIVED I CAN LINK YOU VIA GOOGLE DRIVE SO YOU CAN GRAB YOUR NEEDED FILES. So, message me if you run out of options, I will definitely see it within a few days. (:

I keep getting this error and I have no idea on how to fix this, does anyone know what to do?
Because you are probably using 1.6.1170. You must downgrade it first into 1130(tutorial at the pinned post), and then you can use that BestofWorld patcher. And don't forget to install BEES or the Skyrim going to force close as soon entering the main menu.
Aw, you need BEES on 1.6.1130? I was hoping to not need it since I can't precache grass with BEES enabled. I was willing to give up CPR in order to have a semi-updated game but there's no real difference if this is the case. Thanks for the info, glad I didn't do it before reading this.
Nah, sorry, I'm not clear enough with my words. You need BEES after the downgrading, because BEES is needed for any Skyrim version less than 1130. That including 1.5.9.7 downgraded with best of world. So if you have finished downloading depot and running first time into 1.6.640 / 1.5.97 and then forced close after main menu, try to install BEES and load again. That was my case.

But until then I'll sticky a post below about how to use Steam to downgrade.

just throw those into the steam console one at a time and it'll download
them to your steamapps/common/content folder, replace ur skyrim stuff
with that and ur good to go
thanks bethesda lol
Edit: Huzzah! Another victory for the Knights of the Thorn!
Edit: All I had to do was think about it for a second. This worked for me as well. Thank you!!!
Thanks a lot for your workaround. It seems to work perfectly.
Changing only the exe didn't work, I got a crash at launch, but redownloading everything following your steps allowed me to :
- Launch skyrim.
4. Run the game
Once more, thanks papabrando!
Go back to SteamApps/content folder, do the same for the second depot_xxxxx folder, and then for the third.
You should be able to launch the game the usual way now
Thank you, it worked perfectly!
This worked without a hitch.
Thanks a lot.
also you're a HERO
1. Win+R
2. steam://open/console
THEN
You use LOOT and SSEedit, clean the re-dirtified original .esm files again to prevent more CTD's. Now your Modded SSE should be Pre-Update.
Don't know if that helps for the ones who still have CTD's.
I did it like this and now I'm playing again, as if nothing really happened.
The procedure entry point SteamUserStats could not be located in the dynamic link library
edit: I was wrong, it's perfectly possible to go back to another version after that. ... So yeah it work.
The steam CONSOLE is native to your steam and can be opened via pasting this line in your browser or your windows + R command input: steam://open/console
edit: grammar
you would probs have to update to the new version, get your cc stuff, back up those files and THEN do this but idk if that would even work
Damn, I wish I knew what I was doing wrong!
Hoping the CK can be done too.
Edit: Nvm thankfully I had an .exe backup of 1.6.438.0 in my Mod Organizer 2 folder.
Edit: Nevermind. Looks like there's no need to run the patcher but my game keeps crashing and its missing audio in title screen so thats a bummer.
edit: It works, reloaded the 640 files. Thanks a bunch!
edit: you could probably just use the downgrade patcher bestofboth worlds to convert it to the older version instead of downloading again, some guy said all you apparently needed from this was the meshes.bsa and misc.bsa
UPD: I found the solution for Creation Kit
download_depot 1946180 1946182 5099162879680505807
download_depot 1946180 1946183 1633303557398589581
Should I be waiting until the console says "downloading complete" or something?I'm putting them through the steam console again, but this time I'm just sitting here and waiting for it to say "download complete" or something before I go to put the second "download_depot" in...but it's been like 14 min already and it's only 4271mb, so maybe this isn't right either...
WAIT I THINK I REALIZED WHAT I'VE BEEN DOING WRONG HOLY s#*! HOLD ON STAY TUNED OH GODI'd already tried to do the normal patching approach, updated SKSE and updated Address Library, then I saw half my plugins were broken.
I need V1.6.640 for Nordic Souls modlist but I also need to keep the CC.
And is this steam console process done instead of using the patcher?
Thanks!
May the Nine bless you, good sir.
Is there a Steam depot link for reverting CC content?
Thank you!
Cause, you know, in 20 fucking 23 we STILL don't have progress meters in Steam.
P.S. don't forget to delete
Data/MarketplaceTextures.bsa
Data/_ResourcePack.bsa
Data/_ResourcePack.esl
or they will mess with LOOT.
thanks again.
Will we be without CC content now? I mean I guess I don't really mind unless does anyone know of any mods that require CC content?

What gives? please help.
https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/19esxy9/a_comprehensive_guide_to_downgrading_skyrim/
Here is the text:
To Downgrade from 1.6.1170 to 1.6.1130 the codes are:
download_depot 489830 489831 3737743381894105176
download_depot 489830 489832 4341968404481569190
download_depot 489830 489833 2442187225363891157
(Not needed if you use Best of Both Worlds)Download the 1.6.640 version of skse. https://skse.silverlock.org/beta/skse64_2_02_02.7zNow once you downgraded from 1.6.1170 to 1.6.1130, downgrade again from 1.6.1130 to 1.6.640 aka the version before the December 2023 update.Once more open the steam console as shown above and type:download_depot 489830 489831 3660787314279169352
download_depot 489830 489832 2756691988703496654
download_depot 489830 489833 5291801952219815735Again download these one at a time, then copy and paste the files into the Skyrim folder same as before.Once thats done remove the resources files in the skyrim data folder and the marketplace.textures.
Hope this helps.
thanks
