Q: I want my follower to wear what I give them, so that they can have enchants, etc.
A: Couple of options:
1 - Create an outfit and leave out rings, necklace, etc that you want to enchant. After making the outfit, trade the jewelry and things to them. You will will not be able to enchant the body/upper/lower/boots or whatever you include as the outfit. This still will allow outfit switching so you can make town, home, etc outfits.
2 - Create an outfit for them but leave it empty. They will be naked. Give them whatever you want them to wear. Do not give them duplicates of the same type of thing (1 top/body, 1 lower, 1 boots, 1 gloves, etc) - they can carry other clothing stuff in their satchel. NFF is designed to refresh them when entering a new cell, so they should keep their things on. If you dismiss them they will eventually go naked - to prevent this, go to the Outfit page and turn on Scan Area for Outfit Switch - this will cause them to refresh their inventory when the player enters the cell they are in. This option doesn't allow outfit switching (home, town, etc).
The outfit changes (2.8.0) were done to streamline things and fix a bug with extra sleep outfits defined on some followers as part of their outfit (but that the vanilla game doesn't actually use) and was an effort to fix things, not create new issues.
There may be a bug with outfits going from 2.7.9 (or before) to 2.8.0/2.8.1 if: - Updated in the current game - You have standard + town and/or home outfits defined via NFF for followers prior to the update. - I haven't yet noticed any issue 2.8.0 to 2.8.1 or starting a new game with 2.8.0/2.8.1 - This has nothing directly to do with the helmet bug that was fixed, it's a separate issue. - I have eyes on it to try to determine the cause (because everyone plays differently) and I'm actively monitoring it locally.
This is mainly to fix some bugs and make things better. There are a couple of Command Followers Power features.
IMPORTANT: Hearthfires is now required as I'll be moving towards better supporting some of that DLC. But on SSE/AE this shouldn't be an issue.
FIXES important Game Slot issue and please read how game slot works in spoiler in regard to the game's follower count. TLDR version is only use the game slot if you need it for blades recruitment or for marriage ceremony (there may be other situations but those are the big 2) and clear the game slot otherwise (but dismissal for Blades/Marriage will take care of this also).
STARTUP potential hang is also an issue and this really should only be happening rarely with other script optimization mods. This should be fixed but you may get a warning in papyrus or might see NFF's initialization complete twice on update. This would be due to the script function baking into the save game so it tries to retrieve it then it gets replaced. After save and load should be fine.
CHANGES for 2.8.3 (and 2.8.3b):
Spoiler:
Show
Outfit Preview Mode: - Fixed a bug where outfit creation or removal might accidentally select the last follower you made an outfit for, not the current one. This had a side effect of disabling ai processing on the wrong actor. This fix corrects one script only. FIXED in 2.8.3b - If you have a follower that is turned to stone (will not move) due to this bug, open console, select them, type: tai.
- Fixed an issue where changing the items in an outfit and using preview mode could cause the game to freeze. Intermittent issue, so was not happening in all cases. - Creating or Change an outfit now turns off actor AI processing so that they don't wander around right before making it.
Favorites: - You can now set/remove/change a home base for a follower through the Favorites menu when selecting a specific actor.
History: - History count (sequence) and names now update upon loading a save. The sequence should show correct numbering in the MCM and if the Actor's name has changed, should be reflected (for example "Strange Girl" to "M'rissi").
Misc: - Suppressed load order position warning message for now due to false positives, potentially from a mix of esl and esp mods, where most of them might be esl.
CHANGES for 2.8.2:
Spoiler:
Show
Hearthfires Notice: - Added Hearthfires as master. Nearly everyone should have this master active, especially on SSE/AE. This fixes an issue with those that are asking their kid to tag along on adventures. Should also technically support multiple adoptions.
Game Slot Notice: - Now when using the game slot, the game's player follower count is set to 1.0. This will prevent ANY followers from being recruited while a follower is in the game slot. This was done for compatibility with blades without dialogue changes. Removing a follower from the game slot (either by using the slots page or the follower is dismissed) will set the game count to normal (only sets to 1.0 if 10 followers are being used). Keep in mind that you should only use the game slot if needed - saving a game with a follower in the game slot and loading that game is likely to kick the follower completely due to how NFF initializes.
Fixes: - Weapons should now unequip properly if a follower asked to wait. - Fixed an issue where the game slot wasn't being filled if you've placed a follower in this slot for purposes of Blade recruitement, marrying and the like. Fixed an issue where swapping with a follower already in the game slot wasn't functioning. This is an outstanding issue from a few versions back. - Command Followers power should now perform actions on a single follower properly in regards to follow/wait/dismiss commands. - Fixed a potential issue where the worker threads during startup could get hung, possibly due to papyrus tweaks. After installing 2.8.2, you may get the startup complete message twice as Skyrim may have tried to bake the save. Just save your game, exit and load your save and it should be fine. - Fixed an index error in the Command Followers power, having to do with follower scaling.
Teammate Healing: - Followers in NFF's healer role can now occasionally heal player teammates that aren't followers. This is the lowest priority after: The player, the caster, other followers (in that order). Target must be within 512 units to be healed and is randomly detected (not 100% precise).
Import (MCM): - You can now toggle between allowing a follower to be imported by dialogue via NFF or not. This setting is found under the system page when a valid follower is under the game's crosshair. This does not affect standard followers or expendable recruits. The follower must currently be a player's teammate.
New Favorites Features (via Command Followers): - In the individual Favorites menus, you can now recruit all followers in your created favorite. The favorite followers will be teleported to you and added, in order, to the current roster. Followers will not be added once reaching the maximum follower count of 10. Only standard followers can be affected (no import followers). - In the individual Favorites menus, you can now swap out existing followers for all followers in your created favorite. The favorite followers will be teleported to you and added, in order, to the current roster. Followers will not be added once reaching the maximum follower count of 10. Only standard followers can be affected (no import followers). Formerly current followers will be dismissed and sent to their home base, if they have one. - These two additions should allow you to set up small squads of followers that you can swap in and out or add to the current pool. Also, if you've been just making followers wait to easily acquire them, this might be an alternative for you.
Can somebody tell me - can you have access to full inventory (like equipped armour) using NFF? I want to be able to take helmet or armour that follower have already equipped but I can't have access to that and I don't see any option for that in SkyUi mod menu. /:
Anybody could help me? for some reason the dialogue on npc's don't show up, it works because i see the npcs walking around the city but when i talk with then there isn't any dialogue to me edit their outfits etc.
I'm using NFF together with convenient horses and apparently NFF keeps overruling the horse barding even with all the horse support (that I could find in the menu) disabled. Did i goof something up or is there any way to fix that ?
Is there anyway to disable the "doing history update" notification that happens after every single load? I have the "disable startup notifications" ticked, but it doesent seem to work on the new history edit you made in the recent update.
I tried to reproduce this in 2.8.6b. When I first tried to disable the "Startup Notifications" and then reloaded, I still got the "2 Startup Notifications" just like you.
Only after I deactivated it again, but saved it in a "New Slot" and then loaded this "New Save" did NO "start notifications" appear anymore. Try it this way.
However, it would be unwise to disable these "startup notifications" (usually it doesn't take long) because by doing so you are depriving yourself of an "indicator of the functionality of NFF". You could then only guess from the behavior of your followers whether NFF is working properly: by making potions, sharpening weapons or perhaps getting drinks in a tavern. In addition to these reports from NFF, I personally receive at least 6 other reports from other mods.
If you actually saved in a "New Slot" and reloaded it and still received these 2 messages for NFF, you seem to have additional problems.
i get a CTD every time my follower dies, I noticed there was something in the 6b changelog that tries to delete dead followers, but even when i downgraded back to 2.8.6 i still get a CTD when they die and the "(Follower name) has died" notification shows up
Before installing 2.8.6b in version 2.8.6, were you able to notice a CTD when a follower died? Or has a follower died in version 2.8.6 (that's not clear from your wording)?
Did anything change for you when you installed 2.8.6b - perhaps the loading sequence or did you install other mods besides 2.8.6b?
Edit: If you downgrade to 2.8.6 you should also load a save that does NOT contain version 2.8.6b.
yes, i had a couple followers die before in 2.8.6 without a CTD. when i installed 2.8.6b, i didnt notice any distinct changes, and everything else worked fine. i tried disabling any new mods I had installed, but nothing worked. by the time i found out that a follower death resulted in a CTD, i made a lot of progress on many quests so i just downgraded to 2.8.6 on the same save, which was a mistake on my part.
Edit: i was not getting any startup notifications during all this. when i try to run the "bat freeNFF", i get an immidiate CTD.
You didn't necessarily have to carry out this update to 2.8.6b, as it essentially involves changes to Misty Sky and Summer that you can no longer import into NFF afterwards.(That's just an aside.)
It looks like your problem is much more comprehensive than you presented in the original post. The startup notifications you now mention are an indicator that NFF should be working. If you do not receive this when starting Skyrim you should NOT continue playing and you can usually repair this problem with the so-called "Stuck-Fix" (FreeNFF.txt).
Since the console command “bat freeNFF” also leads to a CTD, I recommend that you read my original post from February 13, 2024, 9:04 p.m. carefully. First check the recommended and optional mods that NFF requires and possibly other mods that are related to them for the correct version for your Skyrim version.
ConsoleUTILSSE may no longer apply to you and you may want to use ConsoleUTILSSE NG. You probably won't even be able to say when your NFF last worked correctly - because you might grab a quick coffee while Skyrim is starting and the start sequences have already run.
If you have managed to correctly fulfill all dependencies on your Skyrim version and therefore for NFF, it should not matter which version of NFF you want to continue with. In principle, 2.8.6b should also work and your game progress should not be lost.
If you have installed all mods correctly (in the correct version), NFF may work straight away without you having to carry out the “stuck fix”.
My apologies, but may you point out where the original post on February 13, 9:04 pm is?
Also, I wanted to thank you for your responses and efforts to help me. While scrolling through the pages trying to find your original post, I found waves of angry comments towards you while you voluntarily assist strangers online with no pay. The entitlement of Nexus users seems to be unmatched.
it seems I cannot get this issue fixed. let me list the solutions I have tried so far to see if there are any discrepancies.

1. copy and pasted the freeNFF.txt file into the skyrim data folder with the nwsFollowerFramework.esp 2. copy and pasted the freeNFF.txt into the nethers follower framework mod folder with the nwsFollowerFramework.esp 3. ensured i had completely updated optional, recommended, and required mods and their dependencies. 4. waited for up to 10 minutes watching the notification area for any messages regarding nethers follower framework 5. installed, deployed, and tested both consoleutilsse AND consoleutilsse NG 6. updated any and all requirements/optional/recommended mods 7. attempted to uninstall and reinstall NFF into a clean save 8. used crash log analyzers to try to identify any mistakes/issues there might be 9. moved NFF to the back of the load list (155th out of 156th) 10. uninstalled nethers karliah to see if that might be causing the issue 11. ensured i had skyui and skse64 properly installed 12. the values of the freeNFF.txt were all false, so i tried switching them to true, and that ultimately did nothing but did not result in a CTD notes: i download my mods using vortex, all of these solutions still resulted in a CTD when running "bat freeNFF", i had 3 followers following me during all of this
ive been using skse and skyui for a couple of years now, but i did go over it and ensure everything was running correctly. could i be making a mistake with the installation process?
It may certainly not be easy to get out of a "messy mod situation" and the main burden of troubleshooting will lie with the user - but it is the user's game.
What I know for sure from your mod constellation is the fact that you had NFF version 2.8.6 or 2.8.6b installed, but received this CTD when a follower died. Furthermore, you will not receive any startup notifications or CTD when executing the “bat freeNFF” command.
That's actually not very much, since there wasn't even a mention of your "detailed Skyrim version" (on which EVERYTHING depends). However, this is not absolutely necessary because as a user you are responsible for installing your mods.
With my post from February 13, 2024, 9:04 p.m. you have a universal guide to solving your problems. If you have the unshakable belief that you have been using SKSE and SkyUi for "a few years" now (well since October 9, 2022) and NOTHING has changed there, please do not check anything further.
I just want to remind you of the last Skyrim update on January 17, 2024 from Bethesda to version 1.6.1170 in case you didn't catch up with that.

Points 1, 10 and 12 were unnecessary: Points 1 and 12 not according to the instructions. Point 10, just a follower mod and rather insignificant. Did the “clean save” mentioned under point 7 also receive a cleaning with “Fallrim Tools”? Point 9 is a general requirement that NFF is at least near the end of the loading sequence. Point 8, "crash log analyzer" - were you able to find anything useful? All other points are simply confirmation that you have checked and installed everything correctly. Since you are using Vortex as your mod manager, installing SKSE should be much easier for you than with MO2.
But all the points mentioned behind your spoiler seem rather superficial, especially when it comes to the mod dependencies on your "Skyrim version". Logically speaking, Skyrim should also work with NFF if all your mods are up to date.
But I had already said that beforehand. Please follow the exact guide from “Skyui_Skse64_installation instructions”.
okay so i finally had fixed the issue. I tried doing another clean save, but this time i followed the proper instructions (turns out I did it wrong the last time, but still did not use fallrim tools on this attempt). after everything was up and working again i saw that the startup menu wouldnt show up like before, and then i ran bat freeNFF and it actually worked, and i did not get a CTD. thank you for taking the time to reply to my messages and assisting me with this issue.
I got a weird issue when I using a new follower, I try to create an new outfit for her, but hers inventory shows other follower's outfit, if I change it, other follower will also change. Looks like two followers are using same outfit inventory. Anyone knows how to fix it?
Would you please say something more: - What did you already do? - Have you updated NFF (how did you do it - or which version)? - Are you getting the “NFF initialization” messages when starting the game? - What version of Skyrim do you have and are all the required mods compatible with this version? - Where is NFF in your “load order”? (Feel free to place your “loading sequence” after a “spoiler” to avoid unnecessary guesswork.)
Q1: I just did what I said: create an new outfit→ Set the default outfit→ and then the inventory already have a outfit which that I give other follower Q2: I'm used 2.7.9 before, because this issue I updated the latest version( Just download the latest version and load by mo2 and then delete the old version) Q3: Yes I have NFF initialization” messages when starting the game Q4: Skyrim is 1.5.97 Q5: NFF at the lowest of the loading order
Well then nothing has changed in your situation with the update to 2.8.6b. The problem still exists - you also get the "2 initialization messages" here, NFF at the end of the LO and Skyrim version 1.5.97 is a stable version (if you have met all the requirements).
I only found one post here on this site from November 28, 2023, 7:32 a.m., written by Juason, which has a similar context, but from which I myself could not draw any conclusions. (approx. page 41)
There are a lot of posts about outfits here, take a look for yourself - but this one as a basic explanation: April 15, 2024, 7:27PM Original @CptCOOTS. You may be confusing something, such as standard outfit (adventuring outfit) with standard inventory (which can contain anything). Or simply do not give the parts taken from the "standard outfit" to ANY other follower and keep them in your inventory (or sell them, but better put them in a safe chest).
Usually the (imaginary) outfits 1 - 3 should be overwritten as @funkmode1 mentioned. Unless you have other outfit manager mods that affect the NFF system. SPID could perhaps be a cause.

There may be a bug with outfits going from 2.7.9 (or before) to 2.8.0/2.8.1 if:
- Updated in the current game
- You have standard + town and/or home outfits defined via NFF for followers prior to the update.
