Introduction

Again I've come back to Skyrim and again I am unhappy with the state of Hearthfire homes.  Who knew?

After 5 weeks of creation kit good times I'm releasing this to the public for use.  I'll eventually upload this to all platforms but for now I want it out there in the event improvements can be made.

A book spawns in the entryway of Windstad Manor.  Please consult it for all instructions of building the overhauled house (what workbenches are used where).

Important

  • You should start Windstad Manor from a fresh state.  In some cases you might be fine if the stars align (3 correct wings and nothing else crafted). It's best to build the Manor from scratch.
  • You MUST build the following wings: East wing - Armory, West wing - Bedrooms, North wing - Storage room.
  • Please read the book for additional instructions located in the Entryway.

Upcoming (Possibilities)

Let me know which you would like to see come first.

  • I intend to create a new display room under the bedroom.  These will be miscellaneous item displays (think Movarth's boots) for Vanilla, Dawnguard and Dragonborn.  Not sure what items should be added atm.  Please provide feedback (I've never beaten any main quests because Creation Kit).
  • A patch between Heartfre Extended and Windstad Exterior Improvements.
  • A patch between Mirai follower mod and Windstad Exterior Improvements.  Should give the user an option to change the Greenhouse into a small house that her mother can move into if the Dragonborn decides to marry Mirai and move the family to Windstad. (Permissions recieved from both mod authors and will be hosted by Windstad Exterior Improvements).
  • Create a patch between this mods mannequins and Mannequins Improved.
  • Adding separate disable and enable recipes for other workbenches (Greenhouse and Attic).

Features

  • Everything is buildable via new workbenches titled (OVERHAULED "room" workbench) and occasionally combinations of the old benches
  • Everything is navmeshed
  • Hundreds of placeable unique item activators and displays (dragon claws, companion guild, thieves guild, mages guild, fighters guild, masks etc...)
  • Daggerfall themed music for cellar and the main house cells
  • No quests have been broken
  • Cellar is untouched

The rooms in detail

Entryway: Similar to the mod Hearthfire Trophy Entryways Remastered the Entryway has been turned into a trophy room of sorts.  There is also a display for my Windstad Manor Interior Overhaul Guide (book) and the Windstad Manor Charter here.

Bedroom Wing: A craftable wall was added similar to the Oldrim mod Some Privacy Please as well as some additional parts to that wall including custom display on the childrens' side and a divine amulet display on the adult side.

Armory Wing: 9 Mannequins, 8 Weapon racks, 8 right / left / shield weapon plaques, 6 2h weapon plaques, 5 large weapon display cases and 8 dagger display cases.

Library Wing: 14 tall bookshelves, 1 small bookshelf, 2 shelves attached to the desk, Black Book display, Elder scrolls display, Oghma Infinium display, Dragonstone and Dragon burial site map displays.

Greenhouse Wing: When crafted from the OVERHAULED Library Workbench a trapdoor to the left of the study desk will appear.

Kitchen: An oven, assortments of food, dishes and liquor.

Main Hall Downstairs: Standard lower level main hall with additional side tables so your NPCs can eat alongside your family.

Main Hall Upstairs: A mounted dragon skull overlooks the dining table.  When the large table is crafted displays for the Companions guild, Dragon claws, Werewolf totems and Dragon priest masks can be constructed.

Attic Sleeping Quarters: Flooring can be added in the main hall rafters and a trapdoor added.  The OVERHAULED Attic workbench allows you to craft all the furniture in this new wing.  A total of 8 beds or 10 beds with the Windstad Manor Interior Overhaul - Hearthfire Extended patch to accommodate the added NPCs. 4 Bedrooms total.

Alchemy Room (Was the upstairs child room): The alchemy table is the focal point of this room. Additional custom displays litter the room.  The thieves guild display, the thieves guild larceny display, the dark brotherhood display, the insect jar display and the paragon stones display. A door can be crafted to section off the area.

Enchanting Room (Was the upstairs adult room): The Enchanting table and Staff enchanting table are the focal points of this room.  Additional custom displays litter the room.  The mage college display and the daedric artifacts display. A door can be crafted to section off the area.

There are many more displays through-out the house but you'll need to find them.  There might be occurrences where the player can place unobtainable items such as "Azura's Star" and "Azura's Black Star".  Some items you must steal from certain NPCs or steal back once turned in.  Unfortunately I spend more time in the Creation Kit then playing the game so I'm not familiar with all of them and I look forward to reading your feedback!

Recommendations

For a true Windstad experience these following two mods are what I'm using to accompany this one.

Kinaga's Hearthfire Extended - There is a patch available on my mod page for compatibility.

Rheknir's Windstad Exterior Additions

Both mods conflict with one another with some exterior placements.  I believe it's the Hearthfire Extended mill and possibly the well?

Nazenn's Unlimited Bookshelves to turn those study desk shelves into journal / note holders!  Makes sure shelves are full of books / notes. (Not compatible with Legacy of the Dragonborn)

Load order for combinations.  Hearthfire Extended followed by Windstad Exterior Additions followed by this mod followed by the optional Hearthfire Extended patch.

Possible FAQs

Q. Will there be a Lakeview Manor or Heljarchen Hall version?
A. No plans but I doubt it.  Doing Windstad alone took me close to 5 weeks to complete.  It was a lot of work to place everything (no static meshes for clutter), ensuring I did not break quests, script testing and navmeshing.

Q. Why Windstad Manor?
A. I typically make my mods for Lakeview Manor but the combination of Hearthfire Extended and Windstad Exterior Additions seemed too good to pass up.  Lakeview Manor has also had so many Overhauls in the past that I am not overly fond of despite being really well constructed.  I didn't even know people used Heljarchen Hall?

Q. Why no static meshes for kitchen?
A. I prefer the Vanilla look.  Static meshes do not feel immersive to me personally.  I should be able to pick up that apple or have a means of interacting with it and that's why I took the time to place everything the way it is.

Q. What do I build where?
A. You should have a book in your entryway the very first time you enter the cell center of the room closer tot he Main Hall doors.  Please read this book as it saves me duplicating instructions and it does a great job explaining what to do for each room.

Q. How do I find all the display activators?
A. There'll be a video uploaded soon so you can at least see the activators pop up and what the completed displays will look like.  I wish I could tell you where everything was but I've lost count and I could not list all the items reasonably or their exact locations.  Just know they have all been tested thoroughly.  When you find one you might need to consult Google on where it comes from.

Q. This display shouldn't be here or this one should be added.
A. Not really a question but please tell me if you think something should be added.  I won't lie, I have never beaten this game.  I am not joking.  I've played 500+ hours and I have no idea where everything is or what comes with it.  You're all much better versed in that.  I don't mind addressing some of these things or creating a new area for a new wing somewhere to house more displays.

Q. Can I have that batch file used in the video?
A. Misc files with instructions. This only supports the main house interior and does not provide materials for the cellar as there are mods to remove the costs of those recipes.

Credits and Inspiration

Betheseda for TES 5 Skyrim and, reluctantly I say, the Creation Kit.  Thank you Betheseda. I am looking forward to TES 6!

Eric Heberling as the original composer for the Daggerfall soundtrack.

Ramón Tobias Molesworth for permission to use his wonderful renditions of the Daggerfall soundtrack.
"Thank you :). Of course you have permission to use it for any non-commercial purposes as long as you credit Eric Heberling as the original composer. Best regards."

Zenogias for the use of his Daggerfall palace rendition. From what I've last seen Zenogias has allowed his renditions to be used for modders.

Kinaga for the permission to use his scripts as my creation kit crashes when I add any.  His mod, Heartfire Extended, is remarkable and a mod I will be using alongside this one.  Please check my mod page as there will be compatibility patches for his mod.

Rheknir for his Windstad Exterior Additions mod.  Combined with Hearthfire Extended these two mods were what made the decision to make Windstad Manor the location for this overhaul and not a Lakeview one as I've typically done in the past. Kudos sir!

Sulhir for his assistance finding a work-around for the entryway chest as well as his inspiring Hearthfire Trophy Entryways Remastered mod. Thank you!

MrDanSG1 for use of their modder resource "Modder Display Compendium - Custom Displays for the Collectible Items found in Skyrim". All the custom displays are based on the backbone of his activators.  Thank you very much for this wonderful resource!

Jokerine for the inspriation for the wall separating the bedrooms and the doors for the upstairs rooms based on their mod "Some Privacy Please". Good idea!

Sherzie for the inspirational placement of the kitchen within the Hearthfire homes in their backroom kitchen mods.  I wanted to re-navmesh this area and not include any static mesh mods however so a new kitchen was designed with the location they used as inspiration. Genius location Sherzie!

Lastly the tester Dangcus1.  You saved me countless hours of testing my man. Thank you for all the crashing you endured.
