I am posting this to all my male NPC mods.

I really hate to do this, but I'm just going to nip this in the bud now.  The majority of my comments regarding my work have been wonderful, highly positive, and encouraging.  Then there are those who do not like my mods but move on.  That is the mature thing to do.  But there are those in this world who insist on giving their entitled input.  Constructive criticisms are welcome.  Toxicity is not.  I try to give my mod pages a positive environment while trying to help people get the most out of my mods.  Yet, while I am a happy person, I don't have the patience for entitlement.  I will be blunt.

If you do not like my mods, you are free to find what you like elsewhere.  Free will is a wonderful thing.  Modders work very hard making their creations for you all that are FREE.  Don't be that person who complains about free stuff.  The gaming industry is toxic enough.  Let's keep things positive and fun.  If you don't like my mod, do not comment on how much you hate it.  Those kinds of comments benefit no one.  That includes in email.  I do not care about your perceived entitlement.

IMPORTANT:  This just came to my attention.  If you are using the updated FOMOD or are updating any of my NPCs, please delete the old ones first.  I have rebuilt all the mods and renamed them a little differently for consistency purposes.  It's best to fully uninstall my old ones and reinstall the updated ones.

    Some notes:

    1. I've dramatically changed some NPCs, especially if they are marriageable.

    2.  I have changed up all the NPCs. I have overhauled my overhauls.  I've added .nif files to the mods, rebuilt the faces using Tempered Skins and SOS Light (mod does not have skins attached) for consistency purposes, and made some other minor tweaks.  I'm happier with it all.

    3.  I've created each updated NPCs from my other mods as well as this with High Poly Head V.4.

    4. I will NOT make one large mod page for all my NPCs yet... 'yet' being the operative word. I have a lot more NPCs to do. When they are all finished, then I will do so. For now, you have to suffer separate files.

If you want to remove NPCs from my mod, you can do so in SSEEedit. It looks daunting, but if I can do it, seriously, anyone can because I'm a techno-idiot. When you open SSEEdit after downloading, it will bring up all your mods. Right-click anywhere and click 'show none' or something to that extent so it unticks all the mods. Then at the top search for my mod by name (PA44 will do). Double click the mod. It will open up all the assets in my mod. Go to Non-Playable Characters, right-click and click remove (not remove filter) for each character you want to get rid of. It will ask you if you're sure, just click yes. Save mod (see the three dashes at the top left? Click that and it will give you the option to save mod.) That's it. You will only have whatever NPCs you want in there. THEN you need to go to the other mod you want to replace my NPC with and delete theirs.

For example: If you only want my Vilkas, you can remove all my NPCs and leave him in there. If you have another NPC mod that changes the Companions, you will need to REMOVE their Vilkas that you are replacing to prevent the blackface bug.

Thanks to smr1957 and sattyre for the heads up on the blackface issue if you edit.

Hello! First of all, wonderful mod. I'm having this issue however where all the NPCs are properly generated save for Farkas and Vilkas. I check SSEEdit, and on initial glance, nothing seems wrong. They appear vanilla, save for the warpaint which has changed to the teardrop stripes (my description) for both of them. My only NPC editing mod is yours, so there shouldn't be any mod conflicts. My skin mod is Tempered Skins for Males - SOS Full Version.

I was wondering if anyone had an semi-exhaustive list of causes for the dark face bug (the more possible causes the better).

The short of it is, with this mod in play Farkas and Torvar have a dark faces, and all the obvious solutions fail to fix the problem.

The detailed explanation. . .Changing overwrite order (left window in mo2) has no effect. Changing load order (right window in mo2) has no effect. There are no missing mod prerequisites. There are no residual facegeom or facetint files; the only versions of their specific facegeom and facetint files present are the vanilla game versions (present from the initial installation), and the replacer versions this mod supplies. After exhausting all known solutions for Dark Face, I tried other male replacers just to see if I would get different results. Once again, all the other intended NPCs changed, all except Farkas and Torvar. From all appearances, it simply seems as though Farkas and Torvar become outraged beyond all cooperation when any attempt is made to change their appearance from the vanilla one (this is hyperbole but only slight).

After some additional troubleshooting, I confirmed that this mod is the only one changing their appearance: went into the esp, removed the changes it made to the two NPCs (essentially making Farkas and Torvar unaffected by the mod), and upon loading the game, both had resumed their vanilla appearance with no dark face bug appearing.

Thus, I am wondering if anyone has a longer list of potential causes for Dark Face bugs in general, that I might try troubleshooting those. Also, if there is an underlying commonality between these two NPCs, exclusive to these two NPCs (other than being stubborn gits), I would appreciate that sort of heads up as well.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Never used the old mod. This is my first replacer for these characters (though I did look through my files as the instructions said just to see if I had a related issue). However, this is my first time hearing of an update. Do you mean the base game was updated recently?

No, I updated my mods for several things, but if you just downloaded it, then that isn't the issue.  Do you use AI Overhaul perchance?  Maybe that's the issue.  Someone made a patch for it.  I don't use it, so I don't know what kind of issues it causes.

I do use AI Overhaul. Disabled AI Overhaul just to test if it affected anything. No results. Possible there are some lingering scripts, so I'm gonna try save/script cleaner. Just to see if it helps.

It could be.  Sometimes saves get corrupted for whatever reason, though I am in and out of my saves while working my NPCs.  I don't test them out on new saves, but I've heard people getting brownface before on old saves.  Do you have any Companions mod running, not just NPCs?

In my case, it was Vilkas who had a black face.

I managed to "solve" the issue by executing a simple command mentioned here:
      https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/5755942-the-dark-faces-bug-how-to-fix-it/page-2

It didn't make Vilkas look as shown in the screenshots, but gave him an improved face (over vanilla) and fixed the black face issue, so I'm happy with that.

To execute the command, I simply walked to Vilkas, opened the console, selected him and ran setnpcweight 35

But his weight is 25.  If he doesn't look like how I created him, what was the point, ya know?  I'm curious what his neck looks like now with the weight differences between body and head.  I am VERY specific and exact with the required body weights when I create the heads.  Brown/black face is generally a mod conflict.  If people are using multiple NPC mods as many do, it will cause this problem.  Especially if you choose my Vilkas over another, remove the other Vilkas, but don't remove the meshes/textures from the game folder.  Or, it's a load order problem.  All NPCs should mostly fall at the bottom of the load order.

      But his weight is 25.

      setnpcweight 25  works too.

If he doesn't look like how I created him, what was the point, ya know?

The rest of NPCs work just fine, it's only Vilkas that has a black face.

I'm not using any other male NPC replacers per se (does Better Males count?).
I use Bijin and Pandorable's for female NPCs only, I doubt they're the cause of Vilkas' black face.

If it's conflicting with Better Males, I wonder why it's only messing with Vilkas...
Seems to me that it should conflict with either all males or none of them.

Or, it's a load order problem.  All NPCs should mostly fall at the bottom of the load order.

Yes, I tend to load npc mods towards the end (I'm also using LOOT).

Oh well, I'll move things around again, keep trying stuff, see if I get lucky.

If not, I guess I'll keep using the setnpcweight workaround

      Great work, btw!

I finally found the issue, it was conflicting with Pride of Skyrim 10 (which also includes this mod, apparently).

It might be a good idea to edit Pride of Skyrim 10's description, listing all the included packs accurately.
Also, I guess you could edit the description of this mod as well, making it clear that it's included in Pride of Skyrim 10.

Thanks again for the mods, great work!

OK, Mueca, that's a lot of ordering me around without telling me what is going on.  My description is thorough and I have a long list of mods that I used in the creation of it.  I don't need to add anything else.  If you found a specific issue, then you can list it here for people who may have a similar problem.  I can't even add to the description if you don't tell me what it is you found.

Well it's been a minute, but I wanted to do some involved troubleshooting since more info is better than less. I made a patch involving all the mods in my load order which even touch Farkas (0001A962) or Torvar (0001A6DB) - which accounts for the long silence as I am not a fast modder - and . . . nothing; both of them zealously stayed brown.

A couple things were learned in the process tho.

Firstly, I confirmed there are no other facegeom or facetint files that could be overwriting the ones from this mod (there are literarlly no other 0001A962/0001A6DB files in the data folder)

Secondly, I, somewhat exasperatedly,  made all the necessary changes (both in the esp and in the facegeom/facetint folders) to swap Farkas' appearance to be a copy of Vilkas' (since Vilkas' appearance - esp, facegeom, and facetint - shows up perfectly in game, I figured I'd be able to get a successful test result for Farkas). After a save clean and a second check to make sure Pride was at the bottom of my load order . . . still nothing.

Thirdly, in tandem with Secondly, I am doubtful that the issue has anything to do with Faceparts. Since both Farkas and Torvar share certain faceparts with other NPCs (ie, Vilkas and Farkas have the same brow, and Torvar and Kodlak share the same beard), and those latter NPCs show up just fine. It might be the hair, that being the only facepart each one has that is exclusive to each, but I cannot find any overwriting meshes or textures for those faceparts.

Rationally speaking, I know it has to be something; the problem has a cause. Non-rationally speaking, I am increasingly reaching the point where yeeting the two of them off of the Throat of the World is seeming the sane option.

Okay, thanks for the extra descriptions.  Now that you mention hair.  This is a common problem with people who don't have Apachii Hair and HG Hairdos when, and only when, they have several different NPC mods they use.  So, if you are using different male NPC mods, that means you are picking and choosing which ones you want, merging, etc.  The only time I've heard brown face due to hair is because of that.  You see, I do not link all the hair textures in the hair meshes of the mod.  No one does who makes NPCs.  This only happens to those people who use multiple NPC mods (for men in this case) and don't have the hair mods.  Switching heads with Vilkas works because they have different hairs.  It's not their heads.  Vilkas and Farkas share the same head and features because they are twins.

I don't have this problem because I don't use multiple NPCs mods for men.  I only use mine.  The point of me making over 300 NPCs really was because people would only need one mod and not have to do that.  But it's their prerogative.

There are two fixes for this.  1)  Download the hair mods so the hair meshes in the mods can read the textures.  or, 2) Link the hair textures to the hair mesh in the mod, which is really simple.  See the image below by clicking spoiler (this is Farkas' hair):

But that's just it, swapping Vilkas and Farkas did not work (I apologize if I was unclear).

After backing up Pride3 esp, I went into the esp, to the npc category, and down to the head parts section and changed the Farkas' PNAMs to Vilkas'  (brow/beard/head etc). Then I went into the actual facegeom data folder, found Vilkas' head mesh (0001A694), copied it, and renamed the copy 0001A692 (Farkas' mesh); I did the same thing with the facetint textures. My thinking here was that 1) there might be some part of Farkas' original mesh - head part, texture, etc - that was somehow being overwritten in my load order. 2) If I changed every part of his appearance to another character, one with a working appearance, and I could confirm or reject that theory: ie, if Farkas loaded in successfully with Vilkas' appearance, then the issue was a HP being overwritten/interfered with, and not a bad file path.

However, all of that ended up being moot because Farkas still turned out brown, even when loaded into the game with Vilkas' meshes and textures; and Vilkas was still working too, right beside his brown-faced twin.

At this point my new theory is that it might be a script, if that is even possible. I recently stumbled on an issue when one npc wasn't loading their correct outfit, and turned out it wasn't the esp or faulty file path but a script that was directing a different outfit to be loaded onto the character. I don't suppose there are any precedents or well known popular mods with scripts that affect npc's facegeoms/tints? Because at this point I just cannot figure out what else it could be.

(I did give the linking the hair mesh to texture solution a try, but it didn't have any perceivable effect)

I'm at a loss.  If it's a script issue, I suggest you start a new game and see how it looks.  But these brown face issues that you are having are generally tied into two combining 2 or more male NPC mods and tinkering with them, especially if you don't have the hair mods.  I also highly recommend you do not change out face meshes with other NPCs.  Vilkas and Farkas have completely different weights.  You're going to have issues.  Plus this is an HPH mod.  Tinkering with that also will have a negative effect.

Not just that, but if you load NPC mods and tinker with them mid-game (editing, removing, installing), you're going to have issues like this.  I suggest you a) start a new game or b) remove other male NPC mods as a test and see if that does anything... in a NEW game.

You can install NPC mods mid-game, but not when you are manipulating several ones at the same time.

One thing I know is that it's not on my end, otherwise everyone would be having this problem.

Would you believe that that final recommendation - starting a new game - actually worked? No huge loss there, I was testing the new load order straight out of riverwood, so only progress that was lost was character creation, which a racemenu export took care of. Now the Companions all look the part: the Pride of Skyrim indeed.

I cannot both succinctly and sufficiently express my gratitude, not only for the mod but also for the patience, but I hope that my tone carries through when I say "Thank you".

Happy Holidays and a Peaceful New Year.

I'm having a problem when I'm removing the characters that I don't want edited by SSEEdit they still get modded. When opening the esp file in SSEEdit the characters don't appear (after I removed them), but in-game they have the black face bug and when opening console it says that they were last edited by this mod. I don't know what I'm doing wrong here as I have followed the instructions, and any advice at this point well be appreciated.

You might have some residual files left in your data\meshes\actors\character\facegen data\facegeom\Skyrim.esm.  Check the corresponding form IDs with those listed in SSEEdit.  If they are there, remove them.  I honestly only removed an NPC only once.  I don't mix/match NPCs.  While it's not overly complicated, you do so at your own risk.  But I not only removed it from SSEEdit, but I also made sure it didn't exist at all in textures and meshes... no lingering files at all.  Then I loaded in an NPC replacer for that one character.  Below is from Sattyre who posted on my Solitude page.  Perhaps it will help you.
      __________________

The black face bug can come from several sources, but so far I have found there is always some kind of conflict.  Most often the conflict is because you have another mod that changes something and the changed assets are not in the same order as the esps.  Many mods that are not NPC overhauls still come with the vanilla facegen in the esp for certain individuals, like Ulfric or Tullius.  This will create the black face bug because it is overwriting the overhaul esp but not the overhauled assets.  All NPC overhauls need to have the exact same load order for both the esp and the assets, otherwise, you end up with black faces.

You can find a lot more info on black face issues here:   Merging NPC Overhauls made easy.

Then download the updated individual mod.  For right now I am not messing with the FOMOD.   They are in bsa format so maybe you're having a problem with that.  I don't know.  But the hair textures are not missing.  Not sure why it would just be for (Vilkas or Farkas... I can't tell since you wrote Varkas) and not any other NPC.  See if downloading the non bsa file works.

Did you uninstall the old version first as I instructed?

Yes, stop using all those NPC replacers (those are ALL conflicting mods).  If you're going to use SSEEdit, you have to be careful and pick and choose which NPCs you want and don't. You should also make sure the ones you remove have no lingering files in meshes and textures.  It's a delicate process and one that is difficult with four male NPC mods running at once.  I suggest you pick just one.

Well that was the thing, they were all working the first time around. I reinstalled recently and figured I'd just use the same mods again, but I forgot to remove the conflicts before starting the game, and I think Jampion NPC's changed my facegen data. I just exported it again in the CK. If this doesn't work then yeah I'll just remove whichever mod is causing the conflict. I just wanted to upgrade as many NPC's as I could, and I much preferred the asthetic of your mod and Males of Skyrim to Jampion and Men of Winter (which admittedly I haven't had an issue using together).

Nah man thank you for making such great mods. I think as a last resort I'm going to manually go into the esm and find the npc's .nif files and remove them, then reinstall your mod. That would solve the issue with the conflict between the non HPH and HPH models right? I could then just regenerate the facegen data in the CK right? Sorry for asking so many questions btw, I'm just trying to make Skyrim "The One Game to Rule Them All" if that makes sense.

You can delete each one using SSEEdit.  That will remove the .nif from the esm.  But, there can be lingering files in data\meshes\actors\characters folder, as well as the one for textures.  Sometimes modders create separate files for each NPC with their own hairs and such.  I just dump mine into one file.  I'm not sure what you mean about needing to regenerate facegen data in CK.  Messing with any of that in my mod will mess up the mod.  Everything is set in its place not only in CK but the .nif.  Everything has to match in and files EXACTLY.  I think all you need to do is remove each NPC you don't want from SSEEdit.  You have several mods that change male NPCs.  So you have to make sure you delete duplicate NPCs, leaving only the one you want.

Okay. Thank you for your help, greatly appreciated. I will make sure NOT to regenerate the data then. And I think that is the issue, there must be lingering files data\meshes\actors\characters folder, as well as the textures folder. Thank you very much for your help.

No problem!  Yes, you have to be careful regenerating that data.  Good luck!

Just one more question, is it normal for Vortex to disallow modification of the game folder? Vortex keeps forcing the .nif files from Jampion to load, rather then from yours. I deleted the .nif from jampion, and for some reason they are back every time I deploy...

How are you deleting them?  You need to delete from the mod itself using SSEEdit, then save the mod.  If you delete from the game folder, the .esp file hasn't been altered in any way, trying to read the .nif.  I suggest you follow my instructions above that are sticky.  The .esp has to recognize the change.  Delete from SSEEdit, save the .esp.

Well that's strange then. I removed all conflicts from the mod. Every NPC that is in your mod, I removed from the one's it's overwriting. I always do that with any npc mod (all of my females are working fine and looking gorgeous). Could it be the USSEP patch for Jampion? Because there does seem to be conflict between this and USSEP? Again, thank you for all the help, and I would totally understand if you didn't want to continue this, I'm probably just being stubborn and wasting my time lol.

Oh, I get stubborn and driven too.  How do you think I learned to make NPC replacers with a broken CK?  I honestly don't know.  I don't use the other mods, so it's hard for me to say.  There are people who are more successful at it.  Maybe in the forums, people will know.  Females should all work because I don't replace any of those.  I can't imagine it's the USSEEP patch.  Lots of mods have that and don't conflict.  There must be something you're missing, but I don't know.  Again, I don't remove individual NPCs.  I used to use Better Men, and that was it until I made my own.

I love this mod - especially Vilkas and Farkas! god- they look so sexy!
BUT /yeahh... there's always a but, eh/... I have the beard problem when they talk. I have the Expressive Facial Animation -Male Edition and I also use Tempered skins. Also your mod is at the end of the load order - where is the problem ? :(

You also need Expressive Facegen Morphs for the facial animations.

Your download order should be: (not load order but installation order)

      Expressive Facegen Morphs
      Expressive Facial Animations
      High Poly Head

      Thank you!
Well I suppose it's a bit confusing cause in the EFM mod page it's said "This mod replaces the morphs for the vanilla human and elf character creations and adds a morph for Racemenu." and first I decided that I don't need it cause it's only for the character creation. Also in the sticky you said that we don't need High poly head or it's more of a personal choice.

Yes, that's right. You don't need the high poly head because it is baked into the mod, but if you have weird eyes and beard clipping, you have to have the Facegen Morphs and Animations. Since HPH updated from V.2 (when this mod was created), V.3 and V.4 now require EFM and EFA. I changed my list of requirements recently in the drop-down on the description page. I don't bake EFM or EFA in the mod, only HPH. It's good to have those when using HPH regardless.

I'm in the process of adding hair .nifs to my NPC mods and that means I have to rebuild them. I am rebuilding using HPH V.4. Those WILL definitely require the two facial mods.

ok, i give up! I test it again in game - the problem is not fixed. I have installed Expressive Facegen Morphs put them in the right order in MO and that's that. I don't know what to do.

You have to uninstall them completely and reinstall them in the order I gave you. That is the way I had to do it. After that, the problem should be fixed.

The install order shouldn't matter cause I use Mod Organizer 2.
There you just drag and drop the mods according to the order they should be /or you want them to be/. aka load order is only for the right panel /the same in which we use LOOT/ and priority order is on the left side of the screen /in which we overwrite and prioritize/.

It does matter. This isn't about load order. For example HPH is to be installed AFTER and it must overwrite my NPCs. It is always listed at the top of the load order because it's an esm file. You don't have to do it. I mean it's your choice. You asked for my help and I'm giving it. I'm telling you what worked for me.

I loaded EFM then EFA then HPH then my mod.. I don't have a beard clipping issue anymore. If you don't want to try, then go for it. And overwriting isn't load order. These two are not the same thing.

Yup that's what I said :D - that load order is not the same as priority and overwriting. I will do what you said but I don't think that's the issue. Maybe some other mod is incompatible or maybe something else. Btw from what I get u're not using MO2 and maybe that's why we can't understand each other very well.

I use Vortex, but I've helped people with this exact issue who use MO2 several times. The issue is common.

If it doesn't work then the only thing I can think of is you have an animation mod that causing problems. The beard clipping when they talk is an animation issue.

Ok the problem is fixed and it was a very trivial and simple fix. Just moved Bishop redone from Skyrim Romance mod above your mod /he also come with High poly head/ and now all works fine. I am posting this for people who may also use the romance mod and wonder what's the problem. I still don't understand why Bishop was making that problem it's strange cause he is completely new added NPC and nothing to do with Thieves guild or Companions but ... there you go.

OK, that's so weird. The only thing I can think of is that he uses a different HPH version. I used V2 for my NPCs. Maybe his version is more recent since it's been updated, right? Updated versions require EFG and EFA. I'm updating all my NPCs to use V4 and have the hair nifs in the mod so no more overwriting. Maybe that will help, but it's going to take a while.

hm now I looked again and I think she uses a different mod for Bishop I mean a different High poly thingy. Here's a quote from the Romance Skyrim page "FOMod installer with various high poly options for Bishop's appearance, ( High Poly Mod by KouLeifoh ). All options include improved textures and a High poly head ".
I know that now it just WORKs lol - but it bugs me why Bishop redone was making funny things with your mod.
I am lost in the depths of skyrim modding.

The Bishop mod also looks very complex to load. It's why I never downloaded it. Maybe when I update my NPCs they will play nice together. I'm actually done with Companions and TG, but I want to finish the rest before I load it all.
