      Well, I'm currently using his save game. He left after taking Serena to the castle and he rejected Vampire Lord. Currently looking for the moth in Dragon Bridge. 
      As for the main quest, he left right before first dragon attack. 
      Some daedric artifacts are collected but nothing much for the side quests.
