"Lurchers are an enslaved bulked up variant of Spriggan, corrupted by violators of natural laws. They can be found in swamps and forests and are often used as guardians. The most common creation method is through a Reachmen ritual that corrupts Spriggans and the environment around them, turning the Spriggans on the area into Lurchers, killing the wildlife, and growing huge, twisting poisonous vines around the place where the spell was cast, using for that goal special Nature Corruption Totems, evil artifacts that continuously exhales an ancient dark magic, a magic able to twist, corrupt and deform the integrity of nature and its servants. Hagravens are probably the original creators of the artifacts.

Commonly these Lurcher cores glow in an intense green light, but Ancient Lurchers tend to glow orange. When a Lurcher becomes unstable in his rage, originating from the revolt against his own irreversibly corrupted condition, forced upon him against his will, he starts to glow in a red intense light, and commonly, due to their unpredictable furious nature, they end up straying, abandoning the function for which they were originally corrupted. The Bosmer also have a few uses for Lurchers, but the Wood Elves produce them using different methodologies. Instead of corrupting Spriggans, they make them grow directly out of the ground, like plants, using special seeds, to use them for protection and warfare. This one type of Lurcher has his core glowing in blue light and are calm and passive unless provoked, making them easier to control and command. Telvanni wizards seem to have an interest on the creation of this variant as well. Some scholars believe that this method of creation is not achieved through corruption, but simply by nature alteration magic, while other theory defends that natural Lurchers simply exist, alongside the artificially generated ones, and are not a fruit of magical alteration like their cousins. However, the apparent lack of ethics of many Telvanni mages, and no embarrassment in using creatures like Spriggans in their experiments against their wills, leads one to believe that at least their Lurchers are also the result of forced manipulation of these spirits of nature. The Reachmen also have their own methods of creation, there have been instances among the clans when Briarhearts transformed themselves into Briarheart Lurchers through Hagraven rituals involving fire, vines, Briar Hearts and blood.

Briarheart Trees are a mysterious kind of large screaming trees with red leaves and the source of the infamous Briar Hearts fruits. Of daedric origin, a Briarheart Sapling, a juvenile form of the tree, its planted over a single corpse, on which it will feed. During the development of the plant, more corpses will be placed bellow the tree's roots. The terrified sounds they produce are attributed to the souls of the bodies they fed on. The trees are able to raise the bones of that corpses, to protect them when attacked, or even Briarheart Lurchers. The fruit produced by the trees is used in rituals by Hagravens to resurrect Reachmen warriors as Briarhearts. It is a great honor to be chosen for this transformation: first the warrior has his heart removed, then the fruit is plunged into the dead warrior now empty chest, at the end of the ritual he is resurrected with greater strength and endurance, but not without consequences.  They suffer from constant pain in exchange for immense power, which they use to protect their clan. Briarhearts are often high-ranking members of their respective clans, with some even being declared chief. They are meant to be treated with respect and reverence for their sacrifice to the people of the Reach, and fringe attempts to weaponize them or remove their free will are considered sacrilegious. Any alive being or corpse can serve the purpose of being transformed by the fruit of a Briarheart Tree, but the ritual holds great importance for the warriors of the Reach in particular. As noted, the Briarheart ritual can be performed on both alive and dead warriors, but it is especially significant when it is voluntarily accepted by a live Reachman. In these cases, the chosen warrior meditates, undergoing a ritualistic period of solitude before their heart can be replaced. The ritual can be abused, however. It is considered tainted if the subject is transformed into a Briarheart against their will. In that case, the free will of the Briarheart is stripped by the Hagravens after the ritual is completed. It is also frowned upon to use the ritual as a punishment."
