About this mod

Perhaps it doesn't make sense to play an illiterate character, but it makes even less sense for that illiterate character to increase their skills with books, or for books to play important roles in the completion of their quests, so this attempts to fix that.

Permissions and credits
This mod removes things triggered by reading books. This includes quests started by books, skill increases from skill books, learning spells from spell tomes, and some scrolls.
Inspired by a redditor who wanted to play as an illiterate Bosmer: https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/alebmp/wanting_to_role_play_skyrim_as_an_elf_that_cant/

Skill books: UESP has a list of skill books found in Skyrim. These have simply been edited to remove the skill increases they convey in vanilla Skyrim. The Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch contains edits to the text of a number of skill books, and this mod contains those edits, but does not require the USSEP to be installed. You can still read the books, and I strongly recommend checking out 2920: The Last Year of the First Era, a twelve part series. Most of them are skill books in vanilla Skyrim, but they are also an excellent story.

Quest trigger books: Removes the scripts which start the following quests when first opening the associated books:
  • Boethiah's Calling
  • Find Red Eagle's Sword
  • Forbidden Legend
  • Lost To The Ages
It seems all can be started without reading the books, however I have not tested this myself.

Known issue: The quest A Return To Your Roots can still be started by reading Sinderion's Notebook even if you haven't already picked up a Crimson Nirnroot, because it works differently from the other quests and I'm not sure how to stop it, but there's a Crimson Nirnroot in the same room as the book.

Spell Tomes: No longer teach spells, however they will still appear in loot and vendors, so you can still sell them.
Note: this removes any ability to learn spells from Spell Tomes.
Without adding in another way to learn spells, this means no new spells whatsoever.

Scrolls: Removed from loot lists and vendor lists. They can still be found in the world, and at the moment, they still work as intended. In future, I may edit them to do nothing, the way Spell Tomes have been.

At present, nothing has been done to affect notes and letters, which may start quests.

Not currently compatible with other mods which edit books or scroll leveled lists, and it will not affect mod-added spell tomes.
