Q&A

How to get the invisible version of a helmet?

>>You need to have the normal helmet first. Then go to ANY FORGE | SKYFORGE (depending on your choice) and find "[helmet name] (invisible)".
It requires the normal helmet for exchange. Tempering/smithing upgrades will be lost!
(Artifacts will have their enchantments in their invisible version as well.)

Does it work for all helmets?

>>Almost. It works for 76 helmets, hoods and masks from the main game and the major DLCs. (Full item list available as image)
This includes special armor sets, Daedric artifacts, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Companions, Dragon Priest Masks and unique items.
It does NOT work though for enchanted items with custom or generated names, nor for mage hoods (for technical reasons).
Enchanted items with the default basic name like "Steel Helmet" will work and transfer/keep their enchantment.
F.e. for a helmet called "Steel Helmet of Waterbreathing" this mod WILL NOT work.

In what smithing category do I have to look?
>>
For the craftable helmets just look next to their counterpart.
  • Dragon Priest Masks are all found in the DAEDRIC section
  • Masque of Clavicus Vile is located in the EBONY section
  • Ancient Helmet of the Unburned is located in the DAEDRIC section
  • Cultist Mask is located in the DAEDRIC section
  • MISC: Nightingale, Dawnguard, Thievesguild, Dark Brotherhood, Stormcloak, Falmer, Forsworn, Fur, Shellbug
*(this is just how Skyrim categorizes the items)

What about tempering/ smithing upgrades?
>>
Any smithing upgrades will be lost on the exchange. The invisible helmets can be upgraded with the same cost & efficiency as their counterparts.
Please note that Miraak (mask), the Masque of Clavicus Vile, the Jagged Crown, the Worn Shrouded Cowl and any item marked as clothing cannot be upgraded and this applies to their invisible versions as well.

Can I get my original helmets back?
>>Yes, for each one there is a reverse recipe in the forge. All smithing upgrades will be lost.
The recipe is called just like the item. Just look for the one with the invisible helmet as input.
Note that this WILL NOT work for enchanted items with custom names - it requires the default plain name like "Steel Helmet (invisible)".

Will my armor perks apply correctly?

>>Yes, that's one core motivation behind the mod.

Does it affect NPCs? Why not?
>>No, unless you give one to them. The intention is not a world without (visible) helmets. But only for the player and their companions to show their faces.

Can invisible helmets be given to followers?

>>Yes, of course.

Why are there six 'Miraak' & another six 'Miraak (invisible)' recipes?
>>
There are 6 different versions of the Miraak mask depending on the player's level (3 stages) and whether heavy or light armor skill is higher [info]
This mod works really simple with hard copies of items and recipes for them. So even though you will only get one version of the Miraak mask you still see recipes for all versions.

Will more items be added in the future?
>>No further updates are planned. Mage hoods and support for all enchanted items cannot be achieved by the simple approach of this mod.
There are no plans to support modded content.

Are there incompatible mods?
>>Any rebalance mods and survival mods adding attributes to items are not supported. The invisible helmets are basically just hard copies after all.
The mod Great Moders' HDT-SMP Physics Hair and Xing seems to be glitchy in combination with this mod.

Are there any requirements?
>>Just the major DLCs, nothing else.

How to install?
>>Via a mod manager or simply drop .esp into "...\SteamApps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data" folder. No witchcraft needed.

How to uninstall safely?
>>Exchange all invisible helmets with their normal counterparts otherwise they are lost.

What mods are used in the screenshots?
>>In the first screenshot: KS Hairdos SSE (for my beautiful hair :D ), FINE FACETEXTURES FOR MEN SSE (for my skin :3)
