I once ran tests using only the skeleton from XPMSE and there weren't any issues; a couple of followers in LE are using XPMSE skeletons but were perfectly fine even without XPMSE installed.
My mod only adds a mesh and changes the esp. It does not burden your load order.
And yes, they will work fine without the XP32 skeleton so long as you don't use their special outfits or make them nude. Yashira (another follower by nachtdaemmerung77) will CTD your game if you try to equip her special outfit without using XP32 or my mod.
