Whether an existing save works with a mod list isn’t caused by it being downloaded from Wabbajack or Vortex, it’s due to the specific mod list requiring a new save.
Most do because they use a lot of mods, some of which themselves require or are designed for a new playthrough, for example: alternate start mods like ASLAL. You need to read the info about a mod list to find this out.
If you want to use an existing save with a mod list, your best bet would probably be a light or purely graphical one.

And for everyone asking, yes this will work with anniversary edition. It's just a savegame file.
