I took at look at Embers XD, and it looks like it won't be a simple fix. I'll mess around with it, but in the meantime, the solution could simply be to overwrite the Ember HD files with those from Embers XD without deleting any. All my mod needs are the three mxwoodburning*.dds textures, which Embers XD does not overwrite.
For Embers XD, can confirm, just install HD with no extra glow, or any other options selected. Install HD, make sure XD wins conflicts, and this patch wins conflicts with both.

You were correct! I've updated burntrubblenodirt05 accordingly in the latest version. USSEP also changed the UV map for burntrubble04.nif, but I'm using the one from Enhanced Textures Detail instead.
