About this mod

A high resolution PBR retexture of the amazing Happy Little Trees mod. I remade the barks from scratch, branches are upscaled and edited. One pine is replaced by the thick vanilla pine tree with HLT branches.

This mod has been available on Discord for about a year now, most issues are finally solved and so there is nothing except laziness stopping me from publishing on Nexus. All trees from HLT are covered: pines, aspens, reach trees, tundra trees, cut wood and stumps. Additionally, I replaced the one pine tree with the nice thick vanilla pine but HLT branches; in case you hate it, delete my TreePineForest01.nif. Snowy and ashy barks are not covered, because lazy stuff like this will be solved with the future CS feature Snow Cover.

All the barks are basically remade by mixing various PBR materials (aspen still uses upscale as a base). The branches and some of the vanilla clutter were upscaled and lightly edited. Barks have parallax, branches have subsurface scattering. No parallax really doesn't work well on leaves.

In the full resolution version, the textures are 2k to 8k, but don't worry, they are not that demanding. The half res version is totally fine though, unless you like to come close to trees in first person or VR. Pine branch variants to match with various snow textures are available in optional files, as well as more saturated (plus yellow and red) aspen leaves.

Important info:
  • Original HLT is required. My mod needs to win both in loose files and plugins.
  • Fabled Forests is supported, it needs to be after original HLT but mine needs to win.
  • LOD works, you might need a test version of Texgen from Dyndolod forums, but maybe not. In my last test it worked normally with Direct and Ambient both set to 100 in Texgen. You can play with the values. I have no idea about the various advanced types of LODs, but they should work, worst case generate lods with my mod disabled.
  • Don't forget to run PGPatcher!
  • My plugin might not be needed at all as PGPatcher supports texture sets now. So if the plugin is disabling some scale changes or whatever that you want, try just disabling it.

HLT PBR vs Lightwood PBR:
  • They obviously have a bit different style, so check out which you like more.
  • HLT has larger variety of pine bark textures and meshes.
  • HLT has nice swaying animations.
  • HLT covers (afaik) all of the regular trees over Skyrim.
  • Lightwood is more performance friendly.
  • Lightwood has nicer uvs, no extra stretchy places on the bark.
  • Lightwood covers Gildergreen (big Whiterun tree).

Known issues:
  • A visible transition/pop-in between the skinned and static variant of the trees. I'm not sure if there is a difference in shading or just the animation stopping suddenly, and nobody except me could reproduce this. The issue can also be "overcome" by increasing the max number of skinned trees in skyrim ini.
