My webbrowser blocks the 7z-file and reports that it contains a a virus, my anti-virus program also reports that the 7z-file contains a trojan (Trojan:Script/Wacatac.B!ml). KingOrca84, your pc seem to be infected and the files you upload seem to be as well.

Which other files were infected? Nexus mods scan came up clean when I uploaded it.

Okay so it looks like just Serah Farron was infected. Can you walk me through exactly what you did (step by step I mean) up to the point when you received the error message in greater detail. There maybe something you did or clicked that can tell me why this would happen.

Hmm... strange, I downloaded the file with nxm to bypass the browser block and scan it with virus total.. and found nothing.. could it be that it's that particular file on that CDN that is infected and not the other? hmm..

I dunno what is going on, When I try to download the file using Google Chrome, the browser detects a virus and blocks the download, while the anti-virus program reports a trojan. However if I just download the file using NXM and then scan the downloaded file nothing is found by either my anti-virus or VirusTotal. I'm not sure what is going on here.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/18qug28/windows_defender_thinks_my_7z_file_is_a_virus/

refer to this article. Windows defender apparently (due to recent updates) can sometimes detect 7zip as malicious software. The Reddit forum says more.

Also watch this video posted by Hagari on the nexus homepage. Watch up until the part where he talks about how they created their own archiving format instead of using 7zip or “WinRar.” Halgari describes 7zip as a “compatibility nightmare,” so it doesn’t surprise me windows defender would go ape s#*! after a recent update when trying to scan a 7zip file.

I see, so it's a False Positive caused by Microsoft.. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this then ^^

I Seriously hate Microsoft, I switched to using Linux fulltime maybe 3 years ago or so. But I still need a VM with Windows for modding Skyrim and Fallout 4 as the modding tools doesn't work well in Linux, once modded however the game runs fine on Linux.

Edit: Personally I prefer to use the 7-Zip-zstd by mcmilk over regular 7Zip as it supports Zstandard compression, I don't use 7z for personal use as it takes a lot of time to extract a single file in a large archive, Zstd is also a bit more space efficient.

Yeah I’m thinking about switching compression schemes at this point. Another modder who downloaded my mods said they encountered issues with windows detecting a virus. I’m going to look into that 7zip zstd you mentioned because you’re likely not going to be the last user that will encounter issues as long as I use 7zip. If you have any doubts about the false positive run a scan with malware bytes and do a full virus scan with your antivirus software.

Zstd is really good, but I wouldn't recommend that you use Zstandard (Zstd) compression/codec for uploaded mods, as I doubt it's supported by any of the tools a game modder might use.

It is however quite amazing when used personally for data storage. I've got an old 2.5" 2TB HDD that I've put in an external HDD enclosure with USB-C, I've setup a ZFS filesystem on it with Zstd lvl 19 compression. I've squeezed in somewhere around 3TB of data on it, and the transfer speed & look up time is quite fast. I'm using it to store a little bit of code, but most of it is recorded videos, NAND dumps & backups of physically owned personally dumped roms (in case the media gets damaged or corrupted).

I've also done gaming (CP2077 + a few other titles) on BTRFS & ZFS partitions compressed with either ZSTD lvl 1 or lvl 3 in the past, which gave a decent amount of storage at an FPS sacrifice that is only noticable by comparing benchmarks.
