Chest Variants uses Base Object Swapper (BOS) to add some variation to the various chests found in Skyrim.

Chest Variants swaps in either Vanilla or SMIM chests (depending on the main file selected) to have them appear along side the replacement chests of your choice.

Both the Vanilla and SMIM chests retain their default texture paths and are compatible with any texture replacer that makes use of these default paths. In my screenshots I am using Skyland Chests.

Plugins are flagged as ESL and does not count toward the plugin limit.

- See end of description for instructions on how to customize the Max Variants Version to your liking -

Max Variants version:
This version was created with Better Chests intended as the base vanilla mesh replacer and incorporates SMIM, Medieval and Chest HD chests into the swaps, yielding the maximum amount of variation.

Requirements for Chest Variants - Max Variants:
Static Mesh Improvement Mod - SMIM
Medieval Chests
Chest HD - Model Replacer
Renthal311Art-wooden chest01
Better Chests (Technically not a hard requirement, but highly recommended for intended results)
Note: Only the Main Files are required. No "snow chest" fixes are required when using Better Chests as a base replacer and keeping to the load order as per below.

Load Order for Max Variants:
  • Static Mesh Improvement Mod - SMIM
  • Medieval Chests
  • Chest HD - Model Replacer
  • Renthal311Art-wooden chest01
  • Better Chests
  • Chest Variants - Max Variants
  • Snazzy SMIM Common and Upper Chests Replacer (Optional)
  • Skyrim Objects SMIMed - Noble Furniture (Optional, required by 7)

Vanilla version:
This version requires any mesh replacement mod of your choice (like Better Chests or Medieval Chests) and swaps in vanilla chest meshes for variation.

SMIM version:
This version requires any mesh replacement mod of your choice (like Better Chests or Medieval Chests) as well as Static Mesh Improvement Mod - SMIM. It swaps in SMIM chest meshes for variation.

General Requirements for all versions:
Base Object Swapper for SE and AE.
Base Object Swapper VR for Skyrim VR.

Optional Files:
A patch for Snazzy SMIM Common and Upper Chests Replacer is available under the Optional Files section. This adds the handles from Skyrim Objects SMIMed - Noble Furniture to the appropriate chests, and the original mod is required for the textures. Have the patch overwrite Chest Variants - SMIM or Chest Variants - Max Variants (not compatible with Chest Variants - Vanilla).

Compatibility:
As this mod is replacing most of the chests with custom FormIDs (not just a mesh, but a new entry in the game's asset library that includes parameters for the chest's contents) it is not compatible with mods that edit the contents of the vanilla chests. This includes loot / scarcity mods like Open World Loot (OWL) and mods like Legacy Of The Dragonborn that adds Fate Cards to the chests. In the case of LOTD the Fate Cards will not appear in any of the swopped chests and in the case of OWL the swopped chests will not be effected by the adjustments to loot made by OWL. All of the swopped chests will have only vanilla contents same as in the base game.

Only vanilla chests are affected though, mods that add complete new chests (with new FormIDs) will not be affected.

Incompatible mods will require a patch to work alongside Chest Variants, and unfortunately I do not have enough free time create patches for all the many mods that fall into this category.

As a patch would only involve an edited plugin, and thus none of the third party meshes only I have permissions for, anyone is welcome to make and publish patches for Chest Variants.

Installation:
Use only one main file.
Use your preferred mod manager to install as per normal.

Customizing the _SWAP.ini:
You can customize the swaps to your liking by opening the Chest Variants _SWAP.ini file with any text editor and making changes as explained below.

Variants can be identified as follows:
No number after the name: Base mesh, which is Better Chests if using my suggested load order.
_1 after name: SMIM mesh
_3 after name: Medieval Chests mesh
_4 after name: Chest HD mesh
_6 after name: Renthal311Art-wooden chest01

I will be using the following default lines to demonstrate how to implement changes:
[Forms]
TreasBanditChest|TreasBanditChest,TreasBanditChest_1,TreasBanditChest_3,TreasBanditChest_4,TreasBanditChest_6
;
TreasDraugrChest|TreasDraugrChest,TreasDraugrChest_1,TreasDraugrChest_3,TreasDraugrChest_4,TreasBanditChest_6
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
If you would prefer the TreasBanditChest to not be included in the swap at all, but rather use only the base mesh replacer, simply disable the swap line by placing a semicolon in front if the line as below. This will cause BOS to ignore the line/swap without any errors:
[Forms]
;TreasBanditChest|TreasBanditChest,TreasBanditChest_1,TreasBanditChest_3,TreasBanditChest_4,TreasBanditChest_6
;
TreasDraugrChest|TreasDraugrChest,TreasDraugrChest_1,TreasDraugrChest_3,TreasDraugrChest_4,TreasBanditChest_6
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
If you would prefer TreasDraugrChest to not make use of the SMIM chest, but instead only use the other meshes, simply delete it from the swap options as below:
[Forms]
TreasBanditChest|TreasBanditChest,TreasBanditChest_1,TreasBanditChest_3,TreasBanditChest_4,TreasBanditChest_6
;
TreasDraugrChest|TreasDraugrChest,TreasDraugrChest_3,TreasDraugrChest_4,TreasBanditChest_6
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
If you would prefer TreasDraugrChest to always use ONLY the SMIM chest, simply delete all other variants from the swap options as below:
[Forms]
TreasBanditChest|TreasBanditChest,TreasBanditChest_1,TreasBanditChest_3,TreasBanditChest_4,TreasBanditChest_6
;
TreasDraugrChest|TreasDraugrChest_1

Please note: Chests with snow textures are defined as such in the Creation Kit during placement in the world. As these make use of swopping texture sets, I chose not to swap any snow chests to preserve the correct texture effects. There are very few of these chests placed in the world though, and I have found that, a lot of the time, Bethesda placed normal (non-snow) chests in snowy areas instead of the snow chests. Please be aware of this before reporting any bugs regarding missing snow textures on chests, missing snow textures will not be caused by this mod.
The only exception to the above is for the High Hrothgar chest. Here I chose to always have the SMIM/Vanilla chest with the correct snow texture replace the one from any mesh replacement mod to ensure correct snow textures are used.
