If I may offer a tweak to this very useful mod? Instead of just bypassing it all together, introduce the option to persuade the jarl (rewarding charisma-based players instead of just stealthy rogues).

Additionally, whatever mod it is that I have installed that allows for additional dialogue options with basically every NPC, there's that TAUNT option that will entice them to attack you (I'm assuming your success rate is based on your Speech skill -- mine was 100 when I tried). On a success, the vamp will attack you and then you get to walk away and say, "I dunno man, he just attacked me." Quest complete, no rogue-y sticky-fingers required.

    Thank you, author.😌

If you notice more nonsensical things with vanilla questlines...do try to share your modifications like us, please.
Somehow, this could turn into a hub for things like this one day.

Can you safely remove vanilla quest stages like this? Just asking because I always avoided doing this for fear that it would cause problems if something else was referencing it.

I wonder if it would be safer to leave the vanilla quest intact but add a speech check on bypassing them?

No idea, it's my first quest related mod.

I looked at the stages, their associated script and dialogue options, and I didn't find anything like that. If something was referencing a specific stage it would be in the script of one of the stages, wouldn't it?
I guess it could be referenced by other stuff though. But considering the fact that it's a very small radiant quest I suppose there is not much risk. Mods are another matter of course.

I wonder if it would be safer to leave the vanilla quest intact but add a speech check on bypassing them?
Maybe, though I suppose you would also need to have the script go through these stages anyway, not just skip to 40, in case some script is listening to this specific quest and waiting for it to progress specifically to 20 or 30. Or even 'deeper', for example if something is listening to the 'event' (I don't know if it's a thing with Skyrim engine/coding) of the player pickpocketing the letter.
In the end to be absolutely safe you must not modify the quest at all. But the mod does not exist anymore at that point.

I am not very knowledgeable about this. I guess it's probably fine. I remember reading something about it being bad in the past when I was going to make some changes to a Brotherhood quest so I passed on it.

I just Googled it and I am not seeing anything about it being bad except maybe those mods that edit the vanilla quest should not be added mid-game or they could cause problems like that, but still I found no definitive answer.

Thanks for taking the time to respond back to me.

      Thanks for the insight!

I guess it could mess with mods editing that specific quest or if you install it while you are currently at one of these deleted stages, yeah.

What I can attest to is that I tested it on a save where I was already at stage 10 before applying the mod and in front of Riften's jarl: I was able to complete the quest without any apparent issue, skipping the deleted stages as intended.

This is really helpful! I may end up making those changes I was afraid of in the past.
