This F.A.Q. is for answers to common questions about Redcap. You will also be directed here if your question can be answered simply by reading the mod page description. If your question is not answered here, it means you need to read the mod page.
You have AFT installed, or have imported him into a follower framework mod, & thus he is broken. As the mod page clearly states, AFT is incompatible with custom framework followers, and unlike most other frameworks automatically imports all followers that utilize CurrentFollowerFaction (most followers) simply by being installed. There is no way to fix this, as AFT irreparably breaks any follower it touches, & bakes itself into a save in a way that makes it unsafe to remove mid-playthrough. You need to uninstall AFT completely, and start a brand new playthrough where AFT was never installed for even a single second. (If you have no follower framework installed & he still isn't attacking: he likely doesn't have a bow/arrows, or he has equipped a scroll you've given him in his inventory but can't cast spells thus not doing anything)
- How do I complete the Redcap's Armor quest/remove it from my journal?
You don't. It's not a quest you can "complete", it's a checklist. When new armors are added to the mod, they can be added to the checklist on existing playthroughs by speaking to Redcap. This is why it won't "complete", because it isn't complete. I will not change this until I never plan to add another armor to the mod again.
- Redcap doesn't seem to have much to say during quests he has commentary for...
As it states on the mod page, almost all of Redcap's quest commentary happens by directly speaking to Redcap during the quest, and not through Idles. For quests he has commentary on, he has something to say at most/all stages of the quest, & for some has full conversations that you will miss out on if you're not bothering to speak to him. A full list of the quests he has commentary for is listed on the mod page.
- Why did I fail the quest "King of All Rieklings"?
This is part of Redcap's commentary on Skyrim's main questline. If you speak to Redcap at any point between learning of the party at the Thalmor Embassy and boarding the cart to leave, he will tell you he wants to come to the party, and will give you the Call Redcap Ring to aid in doing so. If you don't put the ring on at the party, you've disappointed the lil guy (and also missed out on him being able to serve as the distraction to allow you to sneak away) King of All Rieklings appears as a quest in your journal when you do bring Redcap to the party, & fails if you do not.
- Redcap has a Candlelight spell active!
Yes he does! Well, not a spell, but an enchanted trinket that mimics the spell. Rieklings can't cast spells, and with Redcap's history he sure wouldn't want to. Redcap's Candlelight is in his inventory, you can remove it if you don't want him to use it, and even use it yourself if you want.
- Why does Redcap bounce up and down when he talks? Fix it!
This is a vanilla Riekling animation, hardcoded in by Bethesda. There's nothing to "fix", as nothing is broken. Rieklings are just bouncy lil guys. They're silly, hyper snow goblins. It's how Bethesda made them, & it is not specific to Redcap. Any NPC using the Riekling skeleton will bounce when they engage in dialogue. There is nothing I can do to change this.
- Why can't I click on the Totem of the Boar during "You Can Be A Bigpig, Too"?
You need to try standing a bit closer, or a bit further away. The actual thing you're activating is an invisible box surrounding the Totem. If the quest isn't progressing, you're not clicking on the correct spot. This quest has worked as intended since Redcap's initial release & the Totem has been confirmed by testers to be activatable & progress the quest. I also have personally played through Redcap's quests hundreds of times, so any issue activating it is not something present in my mod, & not something I can help fix. If you absolutely can't figure out what is causing it and are playing on PC, you can use the following console command to progress; though you will miss out on a messagebox that explains Bigpig's functionality:
setstage FA01BigpigIntroQ 20
- I have the CC Goblins patch; how do I get Redcap to be considered worthy by Hircine?
Play through Redcap's Bloodmoon quests. All of Redcap's original quests & their requirements to start are listed on the mod page.
- Can Redcap ride Bigpig?
Soon.
- Do I need to start a new playthrough when Redcap updates?
If you do, it will be mentioned prominently in the Changelog. Thus far, Redcap's updates have never required a new save.
