Skyrim Special Edition

Downloading Free Creation Club Content Files (SSE/AE/VR)
An infernalryan Skyrim Modding Guide

Overview
This guide will provide instructions on how to download free Creation Club DLC files contained in version 1.6 if you are currently running a pre-AE release of Skyrim (i.e., 1.5.97), Skyrim VR, or otherwise need to redownload them. Note that it is highly recommended that you instead follow my Updating Skyrim Game Masters guide (which includes the 4 free CC DLC mods), as there is no downside and will provide additional compatibility that this guide does not, but if you are simply looking to quickly (re-)download these files without changing anything else in your modlist, the instructions in this guide will suffice.

This guide provides instructions for both Steam and GOG. Skyrim VR users can follow this process as well if SSE is also owned on either respective platform.

Guide Contents:

    • Preface of who this guide applies to, and Skyrim VR exceptions
    • Download Creation Club content with steps for both Steam and GOG users
    • Manage Creation Club content with your Mod Manager if you want the ability to enable or disable mods individually
    • Further reading for links to other helpful information

Please consider ENDORSING if you found this guide helpful!

1   Preface
If you are currently running a downgraded version of Skyrim, such as 1.5.97 (which does not have direct access to the free CC DLC content), it is still possible to grab these files using the Steam console as they are available to all SSE owners. You can also use the Steam console to redownload these files if you've previously removed them from your post-AE 1.6 version. For GOG users, you can simply redownload files for your current game version. The process outlined does not require you to "update" your game version at all. While these should be safe to add to your existing save game (since we are adding files, not removing them), be sure to create a regular game save before doing so in order to revert back if you run into issues.

IMPORTANT NOTE – This guide is for free Creation Club DLC content only. If you want to (re-)download Anniversary Edition Creation Club content files, the only way to do so is from a current version of Skyrim (1.6.1130 and above) via the 'Creations' menu, which will require you to update your game version so that you can download the files from the in-game store.

1.1   Skyrim VR compatibility
If you have Skyrim VR, and also own Skyrim SSE/AE on either Steam or GOG platform(s), you can perform this same process to import these files into Skyrim VR version 1.4.15 as well. Note that there are minor incompatibility issues with Skyrim VR and the free CC Survival Mode mod (due to game engine limitations), but these issues do not cause any problems in the game (some features just don't work). Instead of disabling the mod in your mod list (or deleting it altogether), it is highly recommended that you keep it enabled, just don't turn it on in the game when prompted. This will help maximize your Skyrim VR modlist compatibility with later versions of USSEP. To prevent the in-game prompt from even appearing, the Survival Mode Prompt Removed mod is recommended.

2   Download Creation Club content
Follow only one of the two options based on the game platform you are currently using (expand their respective 'Spoiler' tag).

2.1   Option 1: Steam users
All files will be downloaded via the Steam console. Once downloaded they will be moved over to your Skyrim /Data folder.

2.1.1   Open Steam console
    • Enter the following in your browser (or Windows Run box with Win+R) to open the Steam Console: steam://nav/console
    • If opened in a browser and prompted to open the Steam Client Bootstrapper, click the 'Open Steam Client Bootstrapper' button.
    • Run each command and wait for it to fully complete before running the next!

You will know it has completed when you see the text that says (example):
'Depot download complete : "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\content\app_489830\depot_489831" (1 files, manifest 2289561010626853674)'

2.1.2   Download free CC content files
See below for manifest command (we only need 1 of the 3 depots since we're only grabbing the free DLC). We're pulling the files from the latest Steam version at the time of writing (1.6.1170), but this version shouldn't really matter since the free CC content has not been modified since version 1.6.1130. If the main game version (and the contained CC content) has changed and is not reflected in this guide because it has not been updated since the last game update, see my Steam Manifest List for instructions on how to obtain the proper manifest IDs yourself (under Game versions > Other Skyrim versions).

2.1.3   Prepare free CC content files
These downloads will be performed via the Steam console.

    • Once the depot downloads are done, refer to the Skyrim console to locate where your depots from above have been downloaded to. By default this is:
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_489830\
    • Open this folder. The following folder should be inside:
      • depot_489831
    • Open the ' depot_489831' folder listed above and MOVE all ' ccXXXsse0XX-filename.xxx' files (.bsa, .esl, .esm) inside the ' Data' folder into your Skyrim /Data folder (cut and paste may be easier) (example: ccBGSSSE001-Fish.bsa).
    • Your Skyrim /Data folder should now contain all 4 free DLC mods (.esm, .esl, and .bsa).
    • Once all applicable files have been moved, delete the ' app_489830' folder and all other files and folders inside it.

2.2   Option 2: GOG users
For GOG we will be performing a file verification to download all missing game files for the currently selected version.

Skyrim VR Note:

If you do NOT currently have Skyrim for GOG installed (for example, if you own Skyrim for GOG but are wanting these files for Skyrim VR), you will have to perform a new installation within GOG to obtain the files. In this case, I highly recommend following my Skyrim Initial Setup Guide for GOG, as the updated masters and latest Creation Club content files can be copied over to your Skyrim VR game folder when finished. Proceed with the steps below if this is not the case.

    • In GOG Galaxy, select your Skyrim game.
    • From the 'More' menu (next to 'Play' or 'Upgrade'), select 'Manage installation > Verify / Repair'.

    • Wait for the game to complete verification, it will show an 'Updating X%' indicator in the top of the window. Hovering over this will show the status.
    • All free CC files should now reside within your Skyrim /Data folder.

3   Manage Creation Club content (optional)
Skip to section 4 if you do not wish to manage these files from your Mod Manager, otherwise, follow my guide on Managing Creation Club Content with your Mod Manager to set this up. There are a few options to choose from and both Vortex and Mod Organizer 2 steps are covered where applicable for each one.
