Introduction
If you are an user of Skyrim Spear Mechanic SE, you probably know that it uses a custom skeleton that places the spears on the back of the characters. But if you use another skeleton mod (like almost everyone do nowadays), you'll see that the spears are placed on the hips instead. A bit unimmersive don't you think?
This tutorial will show you how to move the spears to the back of the characters.
What do you need:
- Immersive Equipment Displays and its requirements.
- Skyrim Spear Mechanic SE
How to use IED (for the purpose of this tutorial)
First, we'll need to access the IED interface while in game, the default key is "Backspace"
Then we'll need to change the Placement of the one-handed swords, because spears are considered as such.
Go to "View>Gear nodes".
P.S.: In versions earlier than 1.7.0, this window was called "Gear positioning". In most recent versions, it's called "Gear nodes":
We'll be using the "Actor" tab and the Player character.
In "Placement" find "Sword" and expand. Leave the first field and blank and create a new override.
In conditions, create a new condition for "Type>One-Handed Sword" and select the "Sword back" node.
Do the same for the "Sword Left" if you want. Then click on the condition and toggle "Equipped" and set the "WeapTypeSpear" keyword (or the keyword from the spear mod you want to use):
This will place the spears on the back when equipped.
Now we'll need to switch to "Custom" view.
Go to View>Display Manager>View>Custom Items:
In Custom view, it's possible to create a new preset or use an existing one.
Now, we need to create a new custom display for the spears, by clicking here:
After creating the new display, we'll begin the configuration.
Expand the new display, and toggle "Last equipped", then add the condition "Type>One-Handed Sword".
Click on the condition, toggle "This" and set the "WeapTypeSpear" keyword (or the keyword from the spear mod you want to use):
Now, in "Biped slots", choose the "One hand sword" and untoggle everything under it (you can leave "Prioritize recent slots" toggled to better filter the spear, if you're having issues):
Now, toggle "Equipment mode", "Disable if equipped" and "Must be favorited". Then finally choose the node:
This will disable the display if the spear is equipped, as we want to manage this via gear nodes. It will also only show when favorited.
Now, you'll have the spears showing on the back of your character when equipped and favorited... But wait, there is more.
If you equip a spear, you'll see your favorited one-handed sword being displayed on the right hip (left hand position), that can be adjusted.
Go to "View>Equipment slots" and then expand the "One-Handed Sword Left" node.
Now, create an override for when a spear is equipped, to move the sword to the left hip (right hand position):
Click on "Equipment overrides" to add a new override, then in conditions, select "Type>One-Handed Sword".
Click on the condition and choose "Equipped", "This" and then set the "WeapTypeSpear" keyword:
Now, choose the "One-Handed Sword NMD" node with the positioning below:
We can't use the "One-Handed Sword (WDM)" node because of the override that sends the swords to the back when a spear is equipped. P.S.: Those values above will place the sword almost exactly like the default node.
We also have to ignore spears on this display, because we don't want them showing up here when favorited.
Expand "Item filters", then click on "Deny" and "Add multiple":
Add all the spears from the mod:
Now, add the same filter in the "One-Handed Sword" display.
Everything is set up, now you can play with the spears on a different placement than the "normal" one-handed swords.
One small detail though. If try to favorite two swords while equipping a spear, the left sword will not be displayed. This happens because of the override in "Gear nodes".

Here is screenshot of my attempt at following guide. Works well when equipped, but when unequipped it appears on hip.
The third step, Equipment Slots, is shown below.
"Now, add the same filter in the "One-Handed Sword" display."
You need to filter out the spears for the One-Handed Sword (right hand) slot. Otherwise, the spears will show up there.
Sorry to spend much of your time on this.
For a setup with dozens or hundreds of spears (looking at you, aMidianBorn Book of Silence + CCOR), this is much more doable than picking them all twice in multiple item filters!
for example if I equip a normal sword, then my spear stop showing on back. Is there a way to make it stay on back in that case?
If not, try to disable "Equipped" inside the One-handed sword condition and enable "Prioritize recent slot" below "Biped slots". I think something was changed in latest versions.
The spear shouldn't go to the hip, did you select the "Sword back" node for the custom display?
I'll do some tests later.
Thank you very much, sir
EDIT: The keyword is "SpearWeapon" for TSC so it's working now yoohoo! Any idea how to make the throwing javelins show up? They just don't, at all.
For example:
-When choosing the keyword in the "Type" condition, you have to select the keyword from Animated Armoury or Heavy Armoury.
-When adding the spears in the "Item Filters", you have to select the shortspears. This will filter out the spears so they won't be placed on the hips when equipping another weapon.
