Introduction
Do you know the mod EVG Conditional Idles?
It's a very cool mod that let your character perform various idles on specific conditions, one of which, being the Shield Cover idle.
When it's raining, your character cover his body with a shield (if it's equipped).
Do you know the mod Simple Dual Sheath?
It's a nice mod that let you view your dual weapons sheathed. There is also a cool feature to "sheath" the shield on the back of your character.
Have you tried to use both mods together and experienced this?
Well, not anymore. :D
In the next few steps, I will show how to "send" the shield onto the hands of your character.
What do you need:
- Immersive Equipment Displays and its requirements.
- EVG Conditional Idles and its requirements.
- Simple Dual Sheath and its requirements.
- And a little bit of tweaking with IED.
How to use IED (for the purpose of this tutorial)
I'll briefly show how to use IED and how to set up displays to properly use the Shield Cover idle.
There are two ways of doing this:
Using Gear positioning/nodes:
It should be very simple to setup.
You'll need to download another mod that adds new nodes to IED.
- Immersive Equipment Displays - Extra Skeleton Nodes .
First, we'll need to access the IED interface while in game and navigate to: View>Gear nodes.
P.S.: In versions earlier than 1.7.0, this window was called "Gear positioning". In most recent versions, it's called "Gear nodes":
Choose where to apply, Global or Actor for example and select "Placement".
Create a new "Override", then add new conditions, such as below;
Then, choose the Shield Left Hand node (if you can't see it, toggle "Unrestricted placement").
The conditions above will use the Player GlobalVariable == 1, meaning that the Shield Cover from EVG is enabled for the player character.
For NPCs, you can use the NPC Global and also add a condition to exclude guards.
Using Custom Displays:
First, we'll need to access the IED interface while in game.
Then we'll need to choose where to apply the presets. We'll be using the "Actor" tab and set a "Custom" preset for the player character.
After the interface is opened, we'll need to switch to "Custom" view:
In Custom view, it's possible to create a new preset or use an existing one.
Now, we need to create a new custom display, by clicking here:
After creating the new display, we'll begin the configuration.
Expand the new display, and toggle "Last equipped".
In "Conditions (item filtering)" click on the arrow to add a new condition, then select "Type" > "Shield".
Like in the image below:
Click on the "Shield" entry and toggle "Equipped":
In "Biped" click on the arrow and then on "Insert" > "39 - Shield".
Remember to disable the checkboxes above the biped, like in this image:
Now, select the "Node" for the shield to appear and then click on "Disabled":
Now, configure an "Equipment Override":
In this step, we'll be conditioning the shield to display only on rainy weathers:
In conditions, create a condition for the Weather:
Then, click on "Weather: Any", and only select "Rainy":
We can go further and add new conditions, such as don't show in interiors, don't show when riding, hide in furniture, etc.:
Remember to toggle the "And" and "Not" like above.
By now, you can see your character holding the shield:
"We already have a shield, what about a second shield".
We need to hide the "sheathed" shield, for that, we'll need to edit the "Gear nodes".
Go to "View>Gear nodes":
P.S.: In versions earlier than 1.7.0, this window was called "Gear positioning". In most recent versions, it's called "Gear nodes":
In "Positions" find "Shield Back" and expand.
Now, toggle "Invisible" and add some new conditions, such as the image below:
Remember to toggle the "And" and "Not" like above.
Exclude guards
This part is optional and it's not included in the preset.
EVG, by default, excludes guards from the Shield cover idle. We can also do this for the displays, by adding this condition:
Remember to toggle "And" and "Not" and do the same in "Gear nodes".
It should look like this:
Final result
"It just works"!
How to apply an existing preset
In the files section, you can find the preset in this tutorial.
To use it, go to the custom view, in the presets section, select the preset "EVG - Shield cover" and click on:
"Apply", if you don't have any custom presets.
"Merge", if you already have some presets.
Then, adjust it to your needs.

Been scratching my head all day, why I could only see the hand above head (and shield on back)
Followed the descriptions, did the same procedures over & over...
What was the mistake?
IED for some unknown reason was NOT propagating the changes to Serana (I was testing with her).
Once I applied everything in her own NPC tab, everything worked as expected.
Even stranger the fact that all other NPC's at scene were updated with the changes, except for Serana...
Thx and Kudos!
Solved, im dumbThe other preset requires another mod.
Thanks for the tutorial, but I can't get it to work on NPCs. I used the Gear Node method.
Update: I only managed to do it by targeting a specific NPC. Same with the position of the shield when a backpack is equipped.
I am having one issue where the shield in my left hand is still visible in non-rainy weathers. Anyone have an idea what I did wrong?
Did you apply the weather condition with rainy flag?
Maybe the weather is incorrectly set.
I think I tinkered with IED v1.5 5-10 minutes back in Oct 2022... I was trying to do this exact thing. I'm glad you figured this out and shared it.
