Q. What are lightbulbs?
A. They are the things responsible for light sources such as fire places, candles, torches, camp fires, dwemer/dwarven lights, etc. to actually emit light. For more info visit the Creation Kit page.

Q. What's the difference between shadow lightbulbs and non-shadow lightbulbs?
A. That answer is already in the naming of the two options. Shadow lightbulbs emit light causing shadows, meaning most geometry will stop the light and cast a shadow. Non-shadow lightbulbs emit light that is not obstructed by geometry. This means these lights will not cause shadows and will shine through all objects.

Q. One or more lights keep flickering, turning themselves off and on, what can I do?
A. First, make sure you are not running multiple lightbulb changing mods like Relighting Skyrim combined with ELFX and/or RLO. Doing so will cause such issues to appear. If you only have Relighting Skyrim installed, then please add a comment on where it is happening and how to reproduce the issue. Provide as much info as you can muster as it will help track down the issue a lot faster than just say "Lights keep on flickering, help!"

Q.
Why doesn't RS have all light sources emit light?
A. Because there is a limit to the amount of lightbulbs that can be in a particular interior cell. There can only be a maximum of six (6) lightbulbs within 4096 units (the size of a cell); and this includes any NPC or player-carried sources (spells and torches). Of those six lightbulbs only a maximum of four (4) are able to be shadow lightbulbs.

On top of that, only three (3) lightbulbs can touch a single mesh surface. Exceeding three often causes that mesh surface to flicker. A "mesh flicker" is a mesh surface changing from lighted by the lightbulb to not lit when moving around; all without the actual light turning off so it is just the mesh that is flickering.

Q. How do I install this?
A. Use a mod manager or copy the file content into the Skyrim Data folder, unless otherwise specified.

Q. It's too dark/too light, can you change it?
A. No! Relighting Skyrim does not change Image Spaces or Lighting Templates. You'll need another mod for that. If it's too dark with vanilla for these two things, then:

  • Make sure you are running with a default game value for "brightness"
  • fGamma=1.0, located in "SkyrimPrefs.ini"
  • Calibrate your display, here is a excellent tool for that Lagom.nl

Q. How is the performance
A. Same as vanilla, with possibility of improved performance in some interiors.

Q. Light flickers, how do I fix it?
A. Post in the Bugs section about it and add info about the location and how to reproduce.

Q. I've got "Zebra" striped shadows coming from a light source.
A. Post in the Bug section about it, and add info about the location.

Q. Can you make a version with "Just In Time" scripts?
A. No. There are no plans to incorporate the Just In Time mod.
