Not to be negative, but of all the people you could make magic-inclined, why Calder? This guy is Housecarl to the Thane of Windhelm, and if there is a magic-hating city in the game, is is that one. A Mage Housecarl in the city of "true (barbarian) sons of Skyrim", really?
Intentional irony. A city of prejudice bent on "NORD POWER!" is promoted up front, but even Ulfric understands the value of powerful allies. I thought it would be a nice touch considering the college of Winterhold's proximity. (Lydia wolf pet companions, Jordis red solitude guard armor, Argis... needed a classic meat shield and was randomly selected, Iona ranger selected as random due to Lydia and Jordis {{{Sword Maiden}}}concept, Calder was left as a great candidate for a mage.)
Also, it is my understanding once a Jarl appoints someone under a thane, the connection is severed, and Jarl Ulfric is not held accountable for the actions of a mage housecarl under the orders of a thane.
