CTD when approaching rift Imperial camp (6 comments)

I have been having a frustrating ordeal of instant CTD whenever I approach the Imperial Camp near Riften to continue the Civil War quest-line. The odd thing is that it only happens when I am actively doing the quest. It doesn't CTD if I approach the Camp without the quest line active. The only mod that is related to the quest-line is Open Civil War...

I'm not sure if it's safe to remove it during the middle of game-play and I would hate to have to start over for the umpteenth time during my umpteenth attempt at a lets play...

Edit: It also seems to be very specific to the Rift Imperial Camp. When I try out the Winterhold camp after telling the Commander Tullius that we should, it doesn't ctd there... Odd...

Nothing odd about it, the game starts up the next civil war mission or fort battle as you approach the camp. When you talk to Rikke "Reporting in" and accept the quest, it gets added to the journal and that is why it looks like it is started only then but it's already there.

      Did you monitor memory usage?

I don't think you understand. The game instantly crashes when I approach anywhere near the Rift Imperial Camp while "Regain the Rift" is active. So I can't get anywhere near Rikke to accept the quest. Ergo, I can't talk to Rikke and regain the Rift, leaving the Civil War questline broken.

"Regain the Rift" is objective in "Reunification of Skyrim" quest. The civil war missions in Rift are "Compelling Tribute" quest, and later "Battle for Fort Greenwall", and the game starts to prepare them as soon as we approach the military camp. And of course it doesn't if "Regain the Rift" is not active; Rikke being there or not is also related to this.

However, Skyrim crashes either when some memory limit is crossed, or when it runs into some sort of invalid data corruption.

So there is some data corruption or memory limit somewhere in the area surrounding the camp, involving the Rift Civil War questline, that causes my game to crash? Because the moment I get pass the bear cave outside of ivarstead or get anywhere near that patch of nordic ruins on the path to the Camp, the computer instantly crashes to desktop without error...

Anyway, decided to ditch OCW and start a new game, because we can never have nice things...

I use Skyrim Performance Monitor to avoid some wild goose chases after crash culprits
      https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/3826

vanilla Skyrim keeps memory usage low enough to not crash when it recommends graphics settings after installation, modded Skyrim is "mod it until it breaks".

if not the memory, another common cause of crashes is a mod with messed up navmeshes - this will crash in a few seconds when close to the invalid navmesh area. But you say that it happens only on the civil war questline, so I guess that is unlikely.
