LORE-FRIENDLY SHIPS AND BOATS VOL 1 - NORDS

Thanks for downloading my Nord ship models. All models and textures in this release have been custom-created by myself and do not use assets created by anybody else.

PLEASE NOTE

These meshes incorporate both sailing and docked features and cannot be used straight away!!! You will need to create a couple of quick and easy texture sets (see how-to below).

Description
- - - - - -
Ever thought that the vanilla, banana-boat-meets-Noah's-arc ship models were unrealistic or unbefitting of the ancient seafaring Nord culture? Ever thought it strange that the trading ships or warships of different races are nowhere to be found in Skyrim? This model set aims to add original, lore-friendly ship and boat models to Skyrim, designed to replace and add to the variety of existing ship models.
I love TES lore as well as 3D ship design and modelling, but have little experience texturing, coding, creating mods, etc. As such, this project started off more as personal amusement. However, as I've amassed about eleven different ship models for Skyrim (Nord, Breton, Imperial, Aldmeri), I'm releasing them onto the Nexus as a modders' resource for others to use and implement in the game if they wish.

VOLUME 1: NORDS
Here are 3 Nord-style ships for you to enjoy! These are directly inspired by the Viking cultures the Nords reference, and are a living link to the long-lost seafaring traditions of Atmora.

- 1.1 - "Nord Rowboat." Designed to replace the vanilla rowing boat that comes with the game. Similar dimensions but much more reflective of the Viking-esque boatbuilding cultures the Nords are based on.

- 1.2 - "Nord tradeship." Open-air, multipurpose trade/fishing/cargo/raiding ship designed to replace the longboats found in Skyrim. Smaller dimensions - similar to Viking "knarr" ships. Designed to fit in along all cities and towns with access to enough water. Beached/out-of-water variant included.

- 1.3 - "Nord greatship." Though I think the largest ships found in Skyrim are far too big for their style, this "greatship" has been designed as an ancestor of the Jorrvaskr ship, and designed with same scale as such ships as the "Danty Sload" and "Red Wave." A mighty four-deck capital ship; special enough to have just one or two of these in the entire game. Perhaps someone could use one as Ulfric's flagship, or for some such similar use?

- 1.4 - "Nord longship." A smaller, sleeker closed-decked ship more reminiscent of the Viking longships, but with scope for an interior. In my mind a great replacer for ships like the Sload.

Details
- - - - - -
This pack includes 4 custom meshes and 14 custom texture files. NO vanilla texture files are used apart from wrshields.dds and wrshields_n.dds on the greatship.
These assets are designed to be added to the Creation Kit under the Statics category (see how-to below).

- Meshes: shipnordgreatship.nif | -shipnordrowboat.nif | -shiptradeship.nif | -shiptradeshipbeached.nif
- Textures: nordshipdeck01.dds | nordshipdeck01_n.dds | nordshipdragontileblack01.dds | nordshipdragontileblack01_n.dds | nordshiprope01.dds | nordshiprope01_n.dds | nordshipsails01.dds | nordcshipsails01_n.dds | nordshipside01.dds | nordshipside01_n.dds | nordshipwood01.dds | nordshipwood01_n.dds | nordshipwood02.dds | nordshipwood02_n.dds

N.B. sails and ropes do not have collision as this enables easier variation with texture sets, plus having the camera click around rope and sail collision when panned out and moving around makes for seasickness... of the non-immersive kind.

How to
- - - - - -
- To create the two different "docked" and "sailing" versions of these assets create two texture sets for each ship, applying a NullTextureSet to the parts of the mesh (i.e. sails up/furled, and separated ropes/blocks) you don't want visible.
- To make this easier, I've added the prefix "docked-" to the parts which are only needed when the ships are docked, and "sailing-" to the parts which are only needed when the ships are sailing.

If you are unsure of how to import the models and/or set up the texture sets, please follow the below instructions:

1. Create new static object and name it appropriately. I named my ships "ShipNord[Ship type] and duplicated each entry, adding the suffices "_docked" or "_sailing" to the two entries.
2. Select "Edit" next to the blank "Model" field and choose the corresponding mesh file.
3. Back in the "Model Data" dialogue, for each part of the mesh you want to disappear, double-click the blank field under the "new texture" header and type in "NullTextureSet." Manually select this from the list and click "ok."
3a. To create "sailing" variants, apply a NullTextureSet to every entry that begins with "docked-"
3b. To create "docked" variants, apply a NullTextureSet to every entry that begins with "sailing-"
3c. Select "ok" when you are done, and "ok" again in the "Static" editor. You can also create snowy and other variants by experimenting with directional material shaders.
4. Repeat the above steps until you have the following files (or equivalent):
- ShipNordTradeship_docked
- ShipNordTradeship_sailing
- ShipNordGreatship_docked
- ShipNordGreatship_sailing
