Yah, just to clear it up - this 'mod' is just a bunch of textures you can use to get different color options for the HDT Tails Wearable mod by deadzone45. Any info on tails mod, files you need, the different tails, ears, install instructions, demo videos and more - you'll find it from the HDT Tails Wearable mod page at:

    http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/58165/

The only thing I take credit for myself, is for moving a few sliders in paint.net program to change the colors of foxy dds files - from Skyrim's fox and arctic fox textures.

    - added two black recolors, use either (but not both obviously) to turn the pink foxtails into black.

    - added 'floaty tail fix' update file. It should fix the issue that makes 1.5.1 tails 'detached' from character, and floating up to your neck while sneaking. Please note that installing latest XP32MSE skeleton from http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/68000/? (plus all it's own requirements) should fix any floaty tail issues, and is much better option - the floaty issue generally happens because an outdated skeleton doesn't have the proper bone for tails to attach.

Like mentioned on description, you can use the fix without ANY other files from this mod. It's a patch for deadzone45's original HDT Tails Wearable, so all you need is 1.5.1 version of that mod.

    Version 1.2
    - wrapped all recolor options into new fomod installer. Textures and options are exactly same as version 1.1, so if you are using the 1.1 version there is no reason to update - unless you move to using the newer SMP 0.5beta version of HDT Tails - in that case you need the fomod installer (or you need to manually move the texture files to right place), since the 1.1 installs do not support the SMP version of Tails.

    Version 1.3
    - blue tail, because request XD
    - tossed in green tail too, because not there >.>
    - I think the descriptions for black tails in FOMOD were all saying they are 1.5.1 version, fixed those typos
I put both green and blue as options for pink tail recolor, so it's unfortunately a choice of either black, green, blue or the original pink. It's because there's only so many foxy colors in original mod, and I didn't want to make a separate .esp to actually create more tails.. that would go a bit beyond simple texture recolor.

The new colors are only in FOMOD installer. If someone is doing manual installs, I'm going to assume they are 'advanced' enough to work it out: download FOMOD package, and extract it somewhere with 7zip program. Find the 'Blue' or 'Green' directory from extracted files, both of them contain just one file, called 'foxpink.dds'. Use that file to replace the 'foxpink.dds' of the original HDT Tails Wearable mod. (You can replace some other color if you rename it instead into foxred.dds, foxarctic.dds or foxblond.dds - this way you -could- use black, blue and green in same installation by renaming each to replace a different original color).

Does anyone have a video guide on how to recolor custom armor? I'd like to duplicate the author's process to make an auburn-orange tail color. Preferably a beginner's guide.

Answered my own question and found a few video tutorials for future color modifiers:

      1) Good overview for how to recolor a custom mod's existing texture with Gimp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHaFFjWLHP4
      2) Overview for how to recolor textures for a vanilla armor piece with PhotoShop/Gimp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p02NysXwV5U
      3) More complete recolor method for Photoshop (follow instructions from vid 2 to upload texture file): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVIpwxlhd0A

1 & 2 also explain what tools you needs to edit DDS files. #3 only explains what to do once you are in Photoshop. These also only show you how to replace an existing texture. If you want to add a completely new texture to the game, then you will need another source.

wonder how this would work with the fennec race mod

It wouldn't work directly, the tail model is different so textures wouldn't fit it and filepaths would be different as well. If that race uses same equip slot for tail then it might be possible to install the HDT tails and use wearable tail to replace the one on the fennec race - and then the recolors would work on that worn tail replacer. The colors wouldn't be very good match for the fennec fur, although the black tail might work - it would match hand and feet color.

you can get it to work with it fine but its nearly impossible to match the colors up, even attempting to alter the textures around and such it just doesn't match up at all... its pretty frustrating to have such nice looking tails but its pretty much impossible to make it look good on the model...

It should work with nmm I think, but I use mod organizer myself so can't say 100% sure.

I've been thinking about making some tippy colors, but it's on whole different level of difficulty to make it look good. Even colors are easy - just grab arctic fox texture, drain all the color to make it black-and-white, and then shift the color curves to whatever you are after. Changing the tip, you need to actually paint the textures to some extent.

I'll probably get to it eventually, but it'll be a while.

      -- edit --

The first attempt was terrible. It was like the poor tail was dipped into paint bucket. I think I'd need something more advanced than paint.net to work on tippys. Either way it'll have to wait for a better day.

Sure. New version 1.3 of FOMOD installer, added blue option for pink tail, and did green option too while I was at it since it was missing. No pictures yet, will look into adding them when I have more time.

Both are fairly strongly saturated - similar to red tail, but green is actually rather bright color, sort of grass green maybe. The blue is darker, but not as dark as the red tail.

Also fixed a few typos on descriptions in FOMOD installer.

Try the latest XP32MSE skeleton from http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/68000/? - it should fix the tail attachment, just remove the floaty fix or it'll override the position even with the new skeleton (in Mod Organizer or newer NMM you should be able to just remove it, otherwise you can reinstall 1.5.1. tails to overwrite the fix). The fix is kind of quick hack that makes it better than the detached floaty tail, but not really 'perfect'. New XP32MSE can be a bit of work to install, but it's worth it in long run.

You'll have to ask that from deadzone45, the author of the original mod - since I only did recolor (if 9-tail version was made in way similar to 5-tail ones, the recolor would work with it as is). For the records, I'd love to see a 9-tail version myself - and there's been a few requests for it on the original mod's page.
