Hey, folks! Just a quick note to let you know that the next update/version of Garrett Dark-Thief is still in the works. I have not had time to do any modding in the past year or so, and I'm trying to get back into the swing of things as I can make some time for mod work. Please bear with me.
Currently I'm working on a dialogue script and custom voice for Garrett, since that has been the most popular request for the next version. Also, this mod will eventually be duplicated for Skyrim SE, but I need to learn more about how to do that properly.
If you are having any issues with Garrett or something in the mod, please post them here or PM me. I'll be checking the mod forum and my messages at least once a week. Thanks for your support of this mod!
Is this mod compatible with immersive amazing follower tweaks? For some reason after talking to garrett dark thief and asking him to follow me, no prompt appears to speak to him. If you are still working on this mod can you see if it can be compatible with that version of AFT?
I wasn't aware that the immersive amazing follower tweaks mod existed, so I'll need to do some testing. I'm going to guess that Garrett is not compatible with it at this time.
I'll add this to my list to look at for the next release and see if it's possible to make Garrett IAFT compatible. I wonder if this mod is what caused the other issue in February, as the description of the issue sounds similar.
Thanks for the post! Sorry that Garrett isn't working in your game right now.
Hey ClockworkRaider, I found a gamebreaking bug as soon as I first talked to Garrett. once I said "Follow me, I need your help", I pressed tab to stop talking to him and suddenly when I looked at him nothing came up, it does not say "[E] Talk Garrett" or anything, and he doesn't have a health bar or any of that. I cannot interact with him in any way!
Hey Scootybum, sorry to hear you're having trouble with Garrett; and for not getting back to you sooner. Just saw this post today. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what could be causing the bug you describe. I'll load up Skyrim and see if I can replicate the issue in my game.
Let me ask some questions to see if we can figure this out (I'm kind of thinking out loud here too).
- Were you able to go through the opening dialogue choices before you can hire Garrett? Where Garrett says "I ain't looking to make friends." and your dialogue option is "Neither am I. But I am looking for a master thief." (It sounds like you did, but I don't want to make assumptions on that.)
- Did Garrett start following you if you walked away from him or went upstairs, even though you couldn't interact with him?
- Did you try exiting the game without saving, and then reloading?
- Did you do a manual install or an install through a mod manager like NMM or MO? In either case, have you tried uninstalling and re-installing (or deactivating and re-activating) the mod?
- Are you running any mods that modify followers in general, Riften, or the Thieves Guild faction? Garrett should be compatible with Amazing Follower Tweaks (AFT).
- Did you install the mod on original Skyrim or the newer Skyrim: Special Edition? (that may sound like a stupid question, but I'm trying to rule out as much as I can think of)
Sending you a PM as well in case you don't see this post. I'll do my best to help fix the problem, but right now I'm not sure what's causing the issue.
Other Nexus users: have you had this happen with Garrett in your game as well? If so, were you able to fix it?
This sounds just what I'm looking for in this play thru, ooo and a trainer of stealth to take with me, " bonus" I have also downloaded the armor mod as well , Tracking and Kudo'd for now will endorse soon as it lets me
Glad you like him! I'm looking forward to being at the point where I can get a VA for Garrett – right now I’m still figuring out what kinds of lines are needed. I’m learning that there are a lot of dialogue details to cover just for a basic follower, and even more for a hireling.
Garrett is not marriageable, mainly because I can’t see his character ever wanting to get married. But Skyrim is a different place than The City, so maybe things are different... Nah. Still can’t see it. :-) I’ll consider the idea for a future edition, though. Thanks!
this mod looks great! the thief trilogy is my favorite stealth game and i think having garret as a follower is great! this could really become one of the top follower mods in the nexus as long as work is put into it to provide the features you have set out, have you thought of taking audio clips from the games to use as a voice actor? a a good voice is essential to a follower mod after all and the real garret voice is fantastic
Thanks! I am hoping to get some new work done on the next version soon - haven't had much time for modding since the initial release. I do have some learning curves to overcome for the advanced features, but it will all work out. Might be around version 3 or 4, but… :-)
The problem with using audio clips from the original "Thief" games is that those games and their content are copyrighted; and permissions haven't been granted for use in something like modding (that I'm aware). Otherwise, it would be great.
Still browsing through the MaleSlyCynical voicetype that Stephen Russell recorded for Skyrim, but most of it will require editing to make the lines fit for a follower. I recently found a couple of great new modding tools that will make this process easier – the Voice File Reference Tool and the PapyrusVoiceRecorder. Enthir's "I hope you've got some coin" is spot on Garrett, but I haven't found much else yet.
What about this "More Follower Voices" mod? It is supposed to make more vanilla voices available as followers. For example, it is used to make Thrynn a follower with use of a Thrynn follower mod.
By the way, I love this follower! Thanks for the mod.
Thanks for suggesting the "More Follower Voices" mod. Using it I tried the console commands on Mercer Frey, Cynric Endell, Brynjolf, Sapphire and Thrynn; since the vanilla game has a follower voice for Sapphire (Eola - FemaleSultry), but not for the others. I was only able to make Sapphire and Thrynn a follower. I also checked the voicetypes listed on the mod page, and MaleSlyCynical and MaleUniqueBrynjolf haven't been started yet. MaleUniqueMercerFrey isn't on the list at all.
However, it turns out that the male Dark Brotherhood initiate uses the MaleSlyCynical voicetype, and he can be recruited as a follower. His lines are specific to the DB, but it's worth a look into the NPC's build. And so the research continues...
Yeah, the real Garrett. Not that joke 2014 reboot knockoff and ripoff Garrett. That aside, I think the similar voice types were Male Sly Cynical and Mercer Frey Unique. Although, I'm pretty sure Male sly Cynical isn't supported by Follower Commentary Overhaul.
Oh, I didn't even know they replaced the voice actor in the reboot (gotta admit I didn't play it). Weird move, after having Stephen Russell do a fantastic job as Garrett for three games. But on the topic of follower comments, wouldn't it be possible to take audio files from Mercer and Male Sly Cynical and put them both together for a new voice set? And also make it compatible with Follower Commentary Overhaul? I'm not a modder myself so I don't know what can be done and what can't.
Short answer: Yes, it's possible. :-) Long answer: It can be done. Nothing difficult per se, just intensive and tedious. Basically you'd be making a custom voiced follower with copies of vanilla assets - duplicating the lines of dialogue needed for the follower and adding them to a new voicetype (if there are lines that could be repurposed for follower dialogue).
I'm not familiar with Follower Commentary Overhaul, but according to the mod's page it only works with vanilla voice types for followers and doesn't conflict with custom voices. So a custom voicetype would technically be compatible with FCO but it would also not be affected by it. (I think.) The MaleSlyCynical voicetype doesn't have follower options, so vex714 is right that it's not supported.
Great idea, but the problem with using assets from the original games is that they are copyrighted. (Not that Skyrim isn't copyrighted, but Bethesda has given players permission to make and use mods; within reason, of course). I'd rather not take the risk of using files from the original trilogy and running into any copyright issues.
Actually, that was my original plan until I realized that the MaleSlyCynical voicetype is not used for any follower voices. Since I was still very new to mod authoring I picked something suitable from the voicetypes that had follower lines. Now that I'm more familiar with building custom dialogue and working with voice files, I could give it a try but it's going to take a while. Although, it would be a great way to learn how to build a completely custom voiced follower, which is part of my future plans for the master thief. Hm...
Dang it. Back into the Creation Kit to do some research....
The first time I went through the Thieves Guild questline I got a kick out of the fact that a lot of the people you encounter were voiced by Stephen Russell. And I was playing as Garrett, so naturally I had to take at least a few screenshots of Garrett and Mercer.
(Sounds of guards being struck down by arrows in a corridor)"What was that!?", says a nearby guard to his patrolling partner. "Must have been rats."
Seeing this mod brings me back that memory. You could make all sorts of rediculous noise a rat could possibly not make and yet guards would throw that dialogue in. lol.

even on the set, so is better to have a separate Garrett.
