A lead mare? The Stallion is the herd leader not the mare. They have complex pecking orders. Just look at the massive herds of Mustangs here in the western USA. All herds are led by a single stallion, and then the harems of females and lower level males and foals. Just trying to set the record straight so you can make your mod a little better. I am sure I will not be the only one that comes in and posts that this information for you.
No, the highest ranking stallion (if there is more than one stallion) in the group is responsible for herding behavior. He keeps everyone together, keeps individuals from running off, etc. He can drive the herd forward from behind. The lead horse (the one that leads the herd from the front) can be a mare, stallion, or even a gelding in domestic herds. Any herd member can try to induce herd movement, but generally the highest ranked members are the most successful at getting everyone else to follow. For the purposes of making a mod, I chose only one horse to initiate movement instead of giving them all a chance with different percentages of successful attempts based on rank (that would be awesome, but I'm not sure if it's possible!)

Just to clear this up for ya - according to the site "Successful Horse Training" which was the quickest one to find this at - "Who is the leader of a horse herd, lead mare or lead stallion? ---- No, it's not the black stallion. It's not the biggest meanest horse in the herd. It's the mare with the most common sense, the one who inspires trust in her herd-members "I knew this already, having been around horses much of my life, is why I bothered looking it up. I signed in here today because your comment bugged me so much I just had to reply. This is a LOVELY mod!
So maybe you might consider looking into things more thoroughly instead of just dissing someone's efforts with only your own opinion as support.
Love this mod. And particularly the fact that you've made the herd essential (even though my character still has a tendency to rush in and "help" if they're getting attacked!) .P. Ironically, if my character is getting attacked, they might rush in and help! .P.
It adds a nice touch to Skyrim, and always pleasant to stumble upon them ingame. Have Bad Gremlins' Fairy Trainers mod east of Rorikstead, and that herd hangs out nearby.
One of those little gems of a mod that is a pleasure to stumble across, and a definite keeper.
The foals look like foals and not miniature adults! I have to download this mod for that alone. And they're essential so I never have to worry about anything bad happening to them, which is the best part.
I'm glad to see an update - this is a great little mod, and I like that it's being cared for! Skyrim is such a wild country, it makes sense some domestic horses would've run away/been abandoned and started a new life of their own. Good job for a first mod!
Looking for potential updates for Horses gone Wild, I stumble upon this! ...and read that unlike what I was searching for this allows me to ride any of the (adult) horses... Reading about compatibilities I'm more concerned how well this plays along with f.ex Convenient Horses and/or Convenient Horse Herding.
EDiT: Can now say that I've run this together with 'Horses gone Wild, and both Convenient-mod's, and it works like a charm! I went east of Rorikstead as that was a place I instantly knew and came upon a herd with a few stallions, a mare and 2 foles. They are *all* ridable, herdable, and utilize everything (except armors) from Convenient Horses such as saddlebags, follow and horse-calling... Finally my Dryad-character took a colt, as they are named, a fole equals a horse her size ^_^ *much endorsed* I will easily use this over similar mod's as all horses are rideable, and thereby gives more immersion and variation in colours.
will it assign the same mesh to the Stallions? That would kinda kill the idea that it's a Stallion. I know most people wouldn't care about such things, but the degree of Realism I strive for is a big deal for me, personally.
