FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I have to read the description and FAQ?
A: Because if you don't and the answer you're looking for is in there then I won't answer your question. Galandil and I both spend hours working on this mod, and you can't even spend a couple of minutes reading? C'mon. It's not that much text.

Q: Why does it require Hearthfire?
A: For the garden upgrade and some of the clutter. I'm working on a version that won't require it but don't expect it anytime soon - it's not at the top of my to-do list.

Q: How do I start the quest and get the home?
A: You can go directly to the Meadhall by opening the console and typing "COC AAVelothiMeadhall01" w/out the quotes. This will teleport you straight into the hall, not through the usual entrance, but it won't break the quest.

To get straight to the point where you can get updates from the steward, Lucretius, you'll have to type "SetStage BTMHUpgradesQuest 10" in the console w/out quotes. You will have to disable the chieftain still, but you can immediately get upgrades.

Q: I don't like the voice acting. Can I remove it?
A: Yes, you can. If you've got the loose files version, it's quite easy. Just go to Skyrim/Data/Sound/Voice and delete the whole BTMeadhall.esp folder. If you've got the BSA version (NOT recommended), then you'll need to go download the program BSAOpt to extract the BSA. Then you have to delete the BTMeadhall.esp folder from the Data/Sound/Voice folder. But then you've got loose files so you'd need to repackage the BSA if you want a BSA, which you CAN do with BSAOpt or with Archive.exe but I won't give instructions on that. Just use loose files!!!

Either way, afterward you MUST install Fuz Ro D-oh or nothing will work. Make sure you turn on subtitles too.

Q: Why do you recommend the loose files?
Q: Occasionally, scripted things or other random stuff doesn't work in BSAs. And there's no solution except NOT TO USE A BSA. It's fine for most mods but scripts like to freak out sometimes. So, if you find yourself with an issue that you can't seem to resolve, before running to the comments please try the loose files version. I recommend it anyway.

Q: Why isn't BSA recommended? They're cleaner! They are faster!
Q: Yes, they're not as messy in your data folder. That's true. No, they're not any faster or slower than loose files, that's a myth. However, sometimes certain scripted things (e.g. quests or upgrading your home) DON'T work in BSAs (see above answer). Sometimes they do, but I don't really want to test. I KNOW everything works with loose files, and I KNOW many modders have had issues when their stuff is in BSA form. So feel free to use BSA, but if something isn't working, try loose files before anything else.

Q: I've found a bug/conflict!!!
A: Great. But before you report it, please do two things for me - they're not that hard:
- Check under the Known Issues area on the main page, and make sure it hasn't already been reported. If it has, don't bother posting about it. I know and I'm looking into it.
- Check the first page of comments (down below) and see if I've mentioned trying to fix it or if someone found a solution. If I've looked into it or someone posted a solution, don't post. I'll post the solution on the page at some point.

Last of all, please endorse if you thought this was a good mod!

Hi there!

Two things: I really love this meadhall, I know you guys were pressed for time but you did a lovely job with this.

Secondly, I can't seem to upgrade certain rooms within the meadhall. I think this issue was mentioned earlier, but after I upgrade parts of the basement, the rest of the upgrades went away. I'm missing the Magical Crafting Room and the Storage Room, I believe. Is there any way to add these upgrades using console commands? It's been quite a few saves since I first encountered this issue.

If not, then I understand. It won't make or break my enjoyment of the meadhall!

Thanks again,
Fawn

I noticed there's a lot of scripts in your mod. Are many of them constantly ticking in the background, or is it safe?
I really like the idea of this mod, but I already have about 180 mods, a few of them quite script-intensive. So I wouldn't like to run into problems with my current save.

No no and no. They're not heavy scripts, they run EVENT BASED not polling. There is no need for polling in this mod, ever.

That's great. I might be a bit paranoid about scripts, lost a few saves to that a while ago. Either way, I checked it out and it looked neat. Only small flaws I noticed was some lights flickering in the main hall and in the smithy there was a floating chest and bellows, looked like there was supposed to be a shelf underneath them. Though it could be something on my end, and I can just disable the chest and pick up the bellows.
But I very much love the look and idea of your mod. For a game with a Nordic setting, Skyrim seems to severely lack in good, Nordic house mods. Endorsement well earned.

The flickering isn't something I control, as just the scripter. But I know what you mean.

Don't disable those if you intend to get the smithy upgrade - I must have forgotten to mark them initially disabled, but they are used in the upgrade.

Thanks!

Finally managed to finish up all the upgrades and such on a normal playthrough. Ran into 2 issues.

1 - After defeating the orc, and being told to talk to the steward... the quest would not move forward. I talked to him, he talked to me. Wouldn't budge. Used setstage to move the quest along, though... and that worked fine. Completed the reunion and that all wrapped up nicely.

2 - Doing the upgrades... When upgrading the downstairs, if I added the crafting/smithing upgrade, the option for the storage upgrade went away, and that dialogue was no longer present. Reloaded a save and tried it again to be sure. Can be worked around just fine by adding the storage before you add the smithing upgrade.

Other than that, it worked great. Really nicely done, overall. Think I'm going to keep this place as my guild hall (using Socko's Guild Starter).

1 is strange, never occurred with me.

2 I did run into at one point, which is why I broke up the dialogue and redid ALL of the dialogue. It seemed to fix it. Apparently not. Damnit. This is an error I've never run into before in all my time modding. I don't have my PC but if I get a chance I'll look into it.

On the description it says that we can add extra beds. Does this mean that I can possibly move any children that I have to this home?

Probably, yes. There's a mod for it I think. Hearthfires spouses and children or something like that. Pretty popular mod.
But you can get the extra bedrooms upgrade which adds 6 new beds.

If you're wondering why this was reuploaded:

I wanted to move the file over to Galandil's account, not mine. Thus, he was going to upload it. So I deleted the previous file. Then, there wasn't enough time b/c of the contest closing so I just had to reupload it and we decided to just keep it here.

So that's that, I suppose.

Shame as you would have lost any endorsement you had on that other page.
The one thing every Viking mead hall should have is a group of drunken rowdy Vikings making merry and eating whole hams while downing copious amounts of honey mead from drinking horn's after returning from a successful raid and to top that a pretty blonde accused of adultery (which she obviously guilty of) with her head and hands through a wagon wheel like stock's and a drunk Viking throwing axes at her plait's which are nailed out, if the axe cut's the plats she is innocent but if it hits her she is guilty (Odin's Test from The Vikings).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-MmIt2ogqc
The clip misses her relieved husband and Einar is the guy she was unfaithful with as were most if not all the other woman in the village.
An old film but still one of the best Viking movies out of Hollywood (in fact perhaps the only good one from Hollywood).

Will download so that I can endorse but I really do think a Viking style neutral bandit island off the coast with this as an Inn and Thane's hall would go really good, perhaps a few long ships in the harbour (the row boat mesh is closest to a real one but need's the mast and to be scaled up, perhaps laden with treasure ale and perhaps captives and the vanilla skyrim long boat is actually more like a Viking trade ship, they did sail similar ship's but they were for trade not raid).

A little trivia ships have two common types of hull's, Displacement hulls are the older type and these have to push water out of the way as the ship moves through it.
A Planing hull on the other hand rides over the water as the vessel gains speed.

Now here is a little more trivia in England we call overlapping wooden cladding for garden shed's Shiplap but most do not know why, it came from the fact that is who Viking ships were once made hence SHIP over-LAP planking and the Viking believe it or not had Planing hulls on there long boats, though some call them semi planning hull's.

As the flat bottomed Viking raider moved over the water it rose up and the ridges of the planking trapped air under the hill which helped it to go even faster by reducing water drag.

Clever those old Vikings yet today we see them as barbarous raiders and that us there descendant's.

It is how it is. It was a rush with a deadline and such. Plus, it just wasn't our vision of the mod.

Also don't think all that's super possible. there weren't many endorsements at the other page anyway, had only been out a few hours.

I am just waiting for the 15 minute timer but am endorsing, it is far smaller than the others and that makes it sweet, still I hope that film clip gave you a chuckle, it is older than me but still a very good film and for it's time they did there best to try to be at least a little realistic, of course most real Viking were farmers and fishermen and there raids were really about gaining land as the law's in Scandinavia at the time made it so that only the oldest son could inherit, that coupled with a warm period that made there crops fertile meant they had a population explosion and too many son's had nothing so the only solution was to go and take what someone else already had.
That said they were among the best sailors in history but I am also partially Maori so I know that the Polynesians who sailed the pacific in far more primitive craft searching for tiny islands to colonize were actually superior sailor's even to the Viking.
Nice work.
