It's my favorite mission in Thief Gold. Trapped in a haunted cathedral, surrounded by powerful enemies, trying to make your supplies last... Multiple replays have taken away some of the tension as I know what to expect, but that first time playing through that level was unforgettable.
Precisely! Looking Glass studios were so far ahead of their time in level and sound design: it blows my mind that almost no modern gaming studios do even half the innovative things Thief I and II did.
And game mechanics. Few games have made a stealth system as good as Thief's. With most modern games "crouch and stay out of the line of sight", and "make one mistake and everyone in a ten mile radius will know your exact location" is as far as they bother with.. What about different surfaces making different amounts of noise? Light levels? Enemy alertness levels?
Good point, yes! Walking on grass should 'absolutely' be more stealthy than walking on marble floors or metal plates! It's too easy 'not' to implement, and yet modern (largely western) AAA game developers can't seem to be bothered to make their ''stealth games'' even pretend to be what they're described as!
Alas, most games these days treat stealth as an afterthought rather than a core mechanic. Even the Dishonored games, which I like, didn't put in the proper effort even though they're clearly inspired by Thief.
Oh man, did Dishonored disappoint me. It couldn't honestly decide if I wanted to be an action game or a stealth game, so it went for both and ended up doing 'neither' well.
Nobody has ever quit put it into words like this guy, lol:
Ha, haven't seen a Rageaholic review in years. He makes some valid points, but I still like the Dishonored games. Definitely better than Thi4f, which has no right to claim membership in the Thief franchise. Or exist.
Oh, you mean 'Teef'? Yeah: that abomination may have destroyed any chance for the series to make a comeback. God, those devs were such f*#@ing hacks it wasn't even funny...
Do people still download this old mod? It's very early work of mine and not as polished as I would like. Are you sure I can't interest you in an updated version, also available for the Special Edition?
Oh well, if people like it then maybe I'll port it to SSE when I have time. An alternate version in the Taffer's Treasure Trove sounds like a good idea.
I like this version FAR more then the new one. The new one just seems a little to... i don't know... The look and feel of this version of the armor feels more true to the game, where as the "new" armor you made feels truly fanmade and a tad... lazy? ... i don't know... it just lacks something that makes it feel more worthy of the Master Builder...
I'm a big fan of Thief, and the failed attempt released at 2014 still makes me grit my teeth...
Suggestion: Merge both mods and let people decide which version of the armors to use? Would be better option in the end...
Hm, I don't exactly hate this version of the armor, but it's one of my earliest attempts at modding, and I am far from satisfied with the results. Partly also because I don't have assets to make a female version for completion's sake.
I'll admit, the newer armor is a bit too clean and shiny, though that style seems to be more popular in general. I keep telling myself I'll work on it some more, but I think I'm juggling too many projects these days, so I wonder if that will ever happen :P I'm fine with constructive criticism, so what could I do, in your opinion, to improve the newer armor? And what is it about the older armor that makes you like it better?
That's odd. Even with no smithing perks you should still be able to see the option to craft the light armor set. Do you use any other mods that affect the crafting system? My mod could be conflicting with those.
Check if the armors show up under MISC in the crafting menu. If all fails, you could add an armor set using the console.
Whoa, awesome! Long-time Thief fan here, too. I remember downloading the demo via dial-up many many years ago...
I would love it if some of the guards in the game could wear the Hammerite outfits and maybe berate me for stealing stuff, or "treading the path of darkness". Do you have any plans for incorporating that or adding dialogue?
I'm not sure whether using the original game dialogue files would constitute copyright infringement, and it still leaves me with the problem of making new voice sets, which I've never done before. Which is a pity because I like your idea of having actual Hammerites in Skyrim

Back in the early 2000's, the last mission in the haunted cathedral genuinely scared me, lol.

Vigilance is our shield, that protects us from our squalid past. Knowledge is our weapon, with which we carve a path to an enlightened future.
Great mod 10/10

Great work, thanks for this.
