Yes, since SSE support all former texture format. Note: SSE support for alpha chanel for landscape textures and supports BC7 compression. I do not recommend using it on textures with BC7 compression.

Side note about texture formats: Windows 7 version of DirectX 11 does not support texture format RGB 5.6.5 (mostly body/cosmetic mods use this). Using it will cause CTD eventually.

On Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10 this is not a issue since DirectX 11 does support it.

Even if I've found it hard to use at first glance and would have been lost without this guide (https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:DDSopt)... Very useful tool that puts your brain to work, when you begin to deal with texturing and want to do it right.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but at least one of the files 'compressed' by this was taken from a large, high quality, 4k male body normal map to a solid black image... My output directory is thankfully separate from the input directory, but checking thousands of files, plus ones in bsas, to make sure they weren't broken by compressing would take weeks...

That's why you just copy your entire installed mods folder and put it somewhere safe and call it a backup. Any time you are doing something like this to your files that you aren't 100% sure what's going on, you should always make a backup before proceeding. Worst case is you delete the unnecessary backup and you've lost only the time it took to copy. Best case, you saved yourself weeks of checking files.

This has helped me A LOT. I kept reinstalling mods and restarting the game and then checking tes5edit for conflicts etc., and even giving up on the game only to start again recently but I still kept getting ctds... until I found this. I never realized most my ctds were caused by VRAM shortage. I had lots of texture mods in the game but majority of them were HiRes (mostly because most of them don't have lowres textures that I could find), so I followed some instructions, DDsopted some of them down, especially a certain HD texture pack, though I did left out other textures that I thought weren't that taxing, and lo and behold. No more ctds on fast traveling, no more ctds after playing for a few minutes of walking into a different location, no more body textures turning black then crashing afterwards no more hdt stuff stretching out and making characters invisible, and finally lesser stuttering and faster loading times. I should have found this ages ago.

Can this be used for any game? If not do you know any tools that can optimize or downscale texture from any game like Dragon Age Origins? I am sorry if this is not related to Skyrim or Bethesda games but I need just at least three more frames to run Dragon Age Origins consistently.

And how do you get it to select Fallout New Vegas when it seems only to select skyrim, oblivion or automatic. ?
