I suggest first, you install this mod to the SSE folder, then here are the steps.  Open the mod in the SSE Creation Kit

      • Launch the SSE Creation Kit
      • Load the Skyrim esp file and set it as the Active file
      • Change something, for example, the name of an item (don't change any ID), and change it back to the original name, so the CK things that your esp file has changed
      • Save the esp file

I hope this might help you just in case. Because this mod is only an ESP.

...it's been ages since this mod was released, I know, but one very pertinent question: Would this be compatible with OmegaRed's guard armor replacer? If you're just changing the equipment that the post-Civil War guards spawn with, I'd imagine not, but if you're preventing the post-war guards from replacing the pre-war guards, then it would probably be compatible.

You've probably figured it out by now, just leaving this here for anyone else who happens to be interested. The two seem to be mostly compatible.
OmegaRed's replacer replaces what's in the default guard outfits. As in, "this outfit does not have vanilla armor it has modded armor instead".
This mod makes all guards actually use said default guard outfits.
However, you should load this mod first, then OmegaRed's, as this mod touched Rift outfit which is also modified in OmegaRed's. Also, you won't get Stormcloak Solitude guards with modded outfit without a patch, as this mod adds a new outfit for Stormcloak Solitude guards.

Wow, a year later almost to the day and I get an answer to the question I'd forgotten I'd asked. Thank you! This'll be useful in a few years when I start my Beyond Skyrim playthrough.

  4. why does your mod require its self, how do you require yourself when you have yourself by default and thusly no longer require yourself before *explodes*

I have the bootless-guard-syndrome too and I'm not running any other guard-related mods.
I'm running all DLC and I'm post Civil War.
These are the mods I'm running:
    - a quality world map - withroads.esp
    - High Res Texture Pack01.esp
    - High Res Texture Pack02.esp
    - High Res Texture Pack03.esp
    - HoldGuardsKeepArmor.esp
    - NoMoreDragons.esp
    - UnreadBooksGlow.esp
I noticed in Solitude and in Markarth only a few guards were bootless, but in Whiterun all of them are bootless
edit: using Pickpocket to check their inventory, I find they are carrying two pairs each of boots and gauntlets while wearing none

Would be neat if the guards had small influences, though.

So an "imperial guard" would wear the hold's armor and helmet, but their bracers and boots would be imperial ones like in Solitude, and their shield would be an imperial one (if they're stationed in Windhelm). It's a bit weird that imperial guards would don the stormcloak logo on their shields.

While a "stormcloak guard" would wear either fur gauntlets and boots or just boots, and a stormcloak shield in Solitude.

This mod is just an ESP so it should be a simple matter of opening it up in the SSE Creation Kit and just resaving it to get it to work for SSE if you want to use it for personal use.

I cannot imagine I will get a response to this, but some of my guards are not wearing any shoes. It is not a major concern, But If there is a way to fix it I would certainly be quite happy. I am using extra guards and the compatibility patch.

What guard armor mod's are you using? Try clicking guard in game console and type resetinventory or resurrect. Then ENTER and exit. If guard is now wearing boots, then everything is ok. You can do commands on any bootless guards. Cells will respawn after 10 in game days, as long as you stay away from that cell.

By the way, the compatibility patch doesn't work as my mod wasn't properly used as a master. Has no effect on my Extra Guards mod. Names aren't changed.

I would use it before, so that soldier armor isn't in your save yet. If you use it after, then you will have to stay away from the guards for ten days or resurrect in game console to get the hold's armor on them.

That's not true as soon as I installed the mod it changed the guards straight away so it shouldn't be a problem if you use it before or after the war

there is a similar mod but it goes by a different name. I believe it is called "less invasive guards" or something like that

Better Civil War Guards (A.k.a. Less Oppressive Occupation)
