    Sticky
1.1.1 is out. I wanted to clarify and cleanup the LOD tweaks, focusing on fBlockLevel1Distance and fBlockLevel0Distance. The baseline is now the ultra default, and from their you can go further or lower. Also added performance warnings to fSplitDistanceMult, the Skyrim Distance Overhaul and the shadow resolution tweak. I also snuck in a change to fTreeLoadDistance, I lowered it slightly to 125000, the difference is insignificant but I feel its a better baseline and less extreme.

What was the fix? I hate the pop-ins.

Depends if it's trees or grass. Both were addressed on the guide at description page.

Hello! A couple of questions (sorry if they've already been asked).

    - Do I need the particle parches if I don't use ENB (that is, if I use ENBoost but no other ENB graphic feature) ?
    - I use Skyrim Project INI (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/69787/?). What do you think of it? It claims to remove all harmful and useless settings (besides acting as a configurator) but I wonder if it removes the ones you advise to remove or leave as-is.

Thank you, have a great day.

project INI seems to follow pretty closely the same guidelines as the recommendations on this one. I made fresh skyrim.ini andskyrimprefs.ini with project ini, and then went through them with this guide - there were a few settings I tweaked to reflect my own system specs.

I'd recommend doing the same - use ultra settings of project ini as starting point, and then check through the resulting inis with this guide.

Or if you feel lazy, you can probably just use the project ini ultra setting files as-is.

Edit: Problem solved. If anyone else uses Mod Organizer and gets a red error message about your ini file, use MO to edit its own config file.

Is there a way to enable ambient occlusion in this preset?

Thanks, now I'm free from editing inis!!

I was FINALLY able to get an ENB working only for shadows with the help of this guide. I had to customise your performance preset a little more, namely I had to turn off the sky changes because it changes the sunglare a lot and causes overblown skies with Purity.
Now I have enb for shadows and enboost, with the vanilla FXAA turned on and sweetfx hooked in to sharpen the image again. My game looks gorgeous, crisp and realistic with perfect gamma and image depth - and virtually no performance drop, only dropping about 5 frames in the most power hungry areas.

Thank you very much, honestly the quest to find an enb that did just the basics has been a 3 year struggle, so I really appreciate this guide.

    FireFreak,

Thanks for this guide. It has a tremendous amount of useful information that I haven't found anywhere else, at least in a well organized format.

I'll endorse as soon as the web site lets me. Apparently, there is a fifteen minute "no-endorse" period after downloading the printable version.

My head is exploding from trying to sort out conflicting advice. The following questions are directed to FireFall, but I'd also be happy to have the advice of anyone who's sorted these issues out for him or herself.

    (1) You recommend The Skyrim Distance Overhaul and the High Quality LODs. In turn, SDO recommends Enhanced Distant Terrain or Enhanced Distant Terrain 2.

    (2) Can all three mods be used together?

    (3) If so, is it better to use Enhanced Distant Terrain (affecting one texture) or Enhanced Distant Terrain 2 (affecting many textures)?

    (4) What's the order for the left pane of MO, in terms of which textures overwrite the others?

    All help is greatly appreciated.

Edit: I just realized your post was from several months ago so I doubt this will help you but since I already wrote more than half of it I am gonna post it. Maybe it will help someone else...

You can absolutely use SDO with EDT or EDT2. I wouldn't personally recommend High Quality LODs if you use other texture mods that alter the landscape significantly as then they LODs from HQ LODs will not match up.

As far as using EDT vs. EDT2 it is really just a matter of preference, although I don't think there is a choice anymore since SparrowPrince lumped all his mods together into a collection called "The Ruffled Feather" with the newest versions of each.

I don't believe that EDT overwrites SDO but if it tries to then do not let it. I'd suggest giving preference to SDO so don't overwrite SDO with EDT or any other mod unless the author explicitly tells you to (which is the case for some mods with compatibility built in or through patches like for SMIM and SkyMills + SkyFalls)

Need some help fine-tuning something related to ENBoost memory management and/or the SKSE memory hack... anybody can feel free to chime in...

Basically, ENBoost/SKSE memory hack combo seems to be working too well. Before I used them in tandem I had serious stutters and occasional crashes because Skyrim was hitting the engine's memory ceiling frequently. At this time I did not have any concerns about exceeding my 3GB of VRAM, however, now that I use ENBoost as well as the SKSE memory hack and have set them up according to meticulous research and testing I scarcely ever have memory-related stutters in-game. Even better, the game engine peaks at around 1GB of memory used so there is a massive amount of headroom as far as the engine is concerned.

BUT, my VRAM is being chewed up like crazy because ENBoost is doing it's job. It seems like it is doing it's job a little too well as it is pretty much inevitable for my VRAM usage to rise to 2950Mb while playing which is uncomfortably close to my VRAM ceiling (especially considering I plan to add more mods to the equation in time). I would gladly use some of the roughly 2GB of memory that the game engine isn't using (thanks to ENBoost doing its job so well) if it meant decreasing even 100-200MB from my peak VRAM usage.

Anyone know how I can strike a balance between the game's RAM usage and VRAM usage so that I don't hit the ceiling of one or the other? I've tried different values for "ReservedMemorySizeMb" and "VideoMemorySizeMb" but the VRAM still comes near its ceiling regardless. For reference, I am currently using "ReservedMemorySizeMb=512" and "VideoMemorySizeMb=3000" but I've tried some different numbers. I'm not sure if this is relevant to the issue but for reference, my SKSE memory settings are "defaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768" and "scrapHeapSizeMB=256"

Any input guys? I'll check back here but if it isn't too much trouble for whoever cares to reply to this, please consider dropping me a PM. Thanks!

Edit: Also, for reference, I am not using any texture mods higher than 2K except for a couple that are a combination of mostly 2K and some 4K in a select few areas. The 4K is unnecessary but they're part of texture packs that are mostly 2K so I think they are pretty harmless except in the couple areas they show up. I don't want to go any lower than 2K for most textures and I don't want to compress/optimize them either because many of the authors of these mods expressly warn against doing so. So I'd prefer no replies telling me to reduce my textures. I would prefer help regarding the ENBoost settings.
