Great mod. But I think I have an issue. Using v4 on a new character, been playing for a little over 1 month in game time, but saves using this mod aren't named as they should be, for example: Character - 1 month, 2 days, 7 hours etc. It skips naming the month, and just names them: Character - 2 days, 7 hours etc.

Before the error began, when I was at about 28 days in game time, I did a backup of all my saves, and deleted the older ones. I did not delete them withing Skyrim, but with Windows Explorer. After resuming playing, I passed the 1 month in game play time, and this naming error occurred.
Could my deleting of old saves have caused the issue in any way?

      Yes, I know...

This is not a "Quicksave" mod. F5 overwrites the same file each time you use it.
According to the modders I know and trust, eventually, the quicksave leads to corruption of the save.
Each time you use my hotkey, you get a new save. This save will only be overwritten at your direction by choosing the number of maximum saves.

Randomly found your mod and I was first skeptic about it, but by reading this you absolutely convinced me that this mod is awesome. ^^

It's true, overwriting saves is bad.

Autosave itself is bad and has always had the potential to go to hell. Since Oblivion at least. (Oblivion, F3, FNV, SKyrim)

It can even crash out right on cell changes as it tries to save and freezes the script VM.

Useful mod. Endorsed. I actually use this in conjunction with Rotating Quicksaves. Rotating Quicksaves gives me just that, while Fastsave gives me snapshots.

Ok, I have used this since first release, Tracked and Endorsed from early on. I loved the 3.x where you changed the save name to include game date/time etc. So, I track this, and now you mention in version 4 "changes" tab above, that you have changed the naming convention again, however, you gave no details? You also mention no more bsa version...

Would you be willing to give a bit more detail for an explanation so that I can determine whether or not I truly wish to update to this version 4.x ?

Thank you very much for your work so far.

From Description Page and FastSave Readme.txt

      v4.0 Examples:
      Aellis - 1 year, 10 months, 5 days, 8 hours, 0 minutes.ess
      Aellis - 10 months, 5 days, 8 hours, 0 minutes.ess
      Aellis - 5 days, 8 hours, 0 minutes.ess

Depends on your game time played whether you see "years" and "months".

And lastly, I realize that people may not think as I do that the names need to be changed. That's why I leave the earlier versions up. I let people choose which one they like.

My mod does NOT do automatic saving.
If its activating while you're fighting, you configured the hotkey to be something you use during a fight or a key very close to the activators that you're smacking by mistake.

As an aside, that's why I programmed the default key to be ]. It's not used for anything and its nowhere near the normal activator keys.

Edit: It just occurred to me that you might actually be saving during combat. If you are, use the games menu to save. There aint a thing I or anyone can do about the game pause during a save. The menu system mitigates it so it isn't noticeable.

If I assign the hot key, it stops working when restarting the game. What is the reason?

Sorry, I can't say what may be going on your system.
The mod works perfectly on mine and based on the number of downloads versus comments, over 125 other systems as well.
If the issue persists, try deactivating and removing the mod, make a save without it, then re-install it.

Some mods that add hotkeys have to be high in the load order or it causes this issue. Some seem to have to be with in a certain range.
I can't really explain it. I just have a couple of mods where the creator says it needs to load before Example " 7E 127" to avoid forgetting hotkey issue.

Mine has done this too. Uninstalled. A shame, though, cuz it was very convenient. I'll reinstall if/when this gets fixed/explained/predictably-preventable.

I'm getting the same issue. I had a previous play through in which this mod worked fine. I've changed some things since and now this mod works only intermittently. I will try changing the load order to see if it makes a difference.

Edit: after putting the mod higher in my load order it works fine now. Don't know why but it does.

Load Order shouldn't make any difference at all.
This mod uses two scripts - one to configure the hotkey and one to monitor for the hotkey press.
A possible explanation for the appearance that the mod isn't working - the detect keypress script runs every 15 seconds.
All versions have been working without issue on my system (SKSE, SkyUI, 154 mods without any of the major overhauls).

I still haven't had any problems running this mod, even though I've changed where it loads several times.
Maybe trying the "clean save" trick will correct whatever is going on.

Deactivate the mod and make a save in an interior.
Delete the mod and the two scripts including the source scripts.
Load the save you just made, go to an exterior and make a save, then go to an interior and save again.
Reinstall and reactivate the mod with the last save.

Just to clarify and hopefully prevent confusion, when you save ANY file in Windows, DOS, Skyrim or whatever, if you keep the filename the same as the file you are overwriting, the entire contents of the original file are wholly and completely replaced by the new file. As an example in reference to what you refer as eventually corrupting your save, that could only happen if the contents of your new file were being MERGED with the old one. And that simply does not happen. The corruption in save files USUALLY is a result of uninstalling a mod with scripts, but there are other reasons as well. There are some great resources here on the Nexus that address issues of corrupted saves, but, fortunately quick saving your game is not one of them. Anyway, hope this helps. Just trying to prevent bad rumors from being spread.

This is true. Merging makes absolutely no sense. It doesn't happen. The claims about bad autosaves have nothing to do with overwriting a file with the same name. It doesn't even happen that way. It's a completely new file, and the old one with the same name is simply added back to the free space. The "overwriting the same file problem" is urban legend. The quicksaving is actually alleged to cause problems because the game isn't "paused" the same way it is when the menu is brought up. Some people believe that saving in a non-paused state can result in save file corruption at some point. It's random. I've never seen this problem occur personally, but if it does, this will also cause the same problem unless it also pauses the game, which I think defeats the purpose of a fastsave. With all due respect to the mod author, I don't believe that this will solve any problems, if they do in fact exist.

This all makes sense. I cannot say one way or another if this is true or not.
Especially the bit about saving without pausing the game.
Take this mod as you will. It was NOT designed as a game fix, though the description about quicksaves is likely misleading.
As such, I will remove that particular section from the description.

I suspect the pause to which you refer is the game engine "freezing" the state of the game while it writes the save, it couldn't very well record accurate data otherwise. As to the time required to do so, that would depend on the individual users hardware, i.e. fast computer = fast save, very little pause, and slow computer = a little more time to write the save.

Anyway, to the mod author: I in no way was trying to discredit your mod. Anyone who commits their personal time to share their hard work with the community is well deserving of respect. If I came across otherwise, I apologize. I actually think what you've done is awesome and hopefully will help others.

These are all valid points, but this mod has joined my list of must-have mods. Not because it fixes saves, but rather provides me a properly logged and easily identifiable save name. On top of that, it automates the process for me and saves the time of opening the console and then meticulously typing in a lengthy save name that may be needed after 200+ hours and several installation/uninstallations of mods. Thanks for your work a.ellis! Endorsed and kudos given.

    Aellis,

Should I go back to a save before I started using version 1 before updating to version 2? Or is it safe to just install version 2 and continue playing or remove version 1, save and then install version 2?

No need to revert. You can install v2 on top of v1 without doing anything beforehand.
