Never realized it was dependent on DLC until I tried loading the ESP. Guess I didn't read the description close enough. Anyway, I don't see why Hearthfire should be a necessity for this mod.
Well, I hope there are others who feel the same. Eventually, I plan to get all the DLC when they all come out and come as a bundle, but until then, no DLC for me. :\
On second thought, I could always just reuse the models and textures and create my own ESP that is not dependent on DLC. I might do that if I get the chance to do so before you decide to create a non-DLC version. Ideally, I'll probably just copy all the stats and attributes that don't use resources from Hearthfire.
I linked it to Hearthfire so, if you have the DLC, you can give it to your kids as an upgrade on the wooden sword. Plus, more importantly, it uses the sounds for the wooden sword rather than the default 1 handed blade sounds, which I felt would not suit the sword at all, especially the loud "ka-shiing!" you get when you draw a sword.
That's actually a good reason to get Hearthfire, then. I didn't know you could give your children weapons to fight with (or do they?) and I also didn't know any new content was added besides building homes and adopting kids. Time to reconsider Hearthfire, at least.
I don't know if the kids do actually fight back like, say, during bandit raids (which happen periodically at the home you build), though I've heard stories from a friend of mine about two instances where his kid shanked some dude and Braith. No idea if that's possible at this point in time. The only weapons you can give 'em by default are daggers (and quite literally any dagger, including daedric), and the wooden sword.
At first glance it looks like a cheaply constructed blade, but in hindsight, one can see that it has endured through many battles, which apparently has charmed other users into liking this mod. Before I read the comments, I thought, "Is this sword any more desirable than other simple weapons I've downloaded?" That scabbard, though. That's what I like most.
The little niches in the blade aren't really my cup of tea, but I'll find some character to make that would fitting for a rough-country kind of PC. Some combination between the personality of a crude-mannered Orc, and an honor-and-glory type Nord. I may copy the scabbard to another one or two weapons with the similar look you went for. I really like the plain leather sheath you have here, and whatever you do to change it, I hope you'll keep it's decorativeness to a minimum.
I too hated the vanilla weapons (well, mostly the very early ones), so this mod is a welcome alternative to the iron and steel variants that try to be simple but fail to be attractive.

Still looks great in any case.
