It's fine, none can learn how to make a popular and widely used mod in a matter of days or weeks. Texture and modelling require atleast some experience with each of the tools, and you cant get that right off the bat, even with good tutorials. You learned how to apply an existing texture on an existing item, it's a progress however small it seems to the modding community, so dont let that first drawback get you down.
If you somehow cant wrap your finger around textures, remember there is more than one thing you can mod, stats and items properties are things which require a little less practice, but are still mods nonetheless.

Good luck with your future mods.
