    This video demonstrates what is possible with a well thought out load order and optimized game.

    1920x1080 resolution
    Blend of High to Ultra Game Settings
    Vanilla Textures - 1K
    Landscape & Interiors - 2K
    Water & Ivy - 4K
    Dragons - 8K
    HD Body & Makeup textures
    HD 2K - 4K Armors
    HD 2K Weapons
    Nearly 20 GB worth of HD Meshes and Textures Installed
    Moderate to Heavy Load Order
    Highly Optimized Game
    2 waves of 60 zombies using Sands of Time (120 zombies in 5 minutes)

    How to Have the Best Modded Skyrim Experience

    I made this video to prove that my Skyrim guide works. I was able to push Skyrim to it's limit with a highly optimized game.

    Most players will CTD with 8 HD followers alone! I did this with nearly 20 GB of HD meshes and textures installed plus 2 waves of 60 biters. I ran this scenario 4 times with no crashes.

    My framerate was low due to maxing my video card out at 100% utilization and recording HD video in the background. Recorded nearly 4GB of video to the hard drive while playing the game (7200 RPM Platter hard drive). Normal game play is between 30 - 60 FPS.

    Youtube didn't like my video size or something because it took my 1 GB HD video and converted it to a lousy 360p. Update: Youtube now has a 720p option for the video but it really should have been 1080p. My game is absolutely gorgeous but you can't see the full beauty of it since youtube down-scaled the video too much.

    'How to Have the Best Modded Skyrim Experience' Guide is now version 3.1. Added feedback from tonycubed2 and Jebbalon. Added a 'Operating System & Skyrim Resources' - 'LOOT' - and 'Helpful Tutorials' section. Improved the 'INI' section and updated several other sections. Removed the 'Limiting FPS' section - not needed.

    'Rebuilding Skyrim from Scratch' is now version 2.1. Updated all sections. Great guide if you want to start 100% fresh with a new clean Skyrim installation.

    My Longer Durations and Annoyance Fixes mod fixes a lot of annoyances in Skyrim.

    Here is my Skyrim configuration and load order for those who are interested. UPDATED: 03/05/2015

    Highly Recommended Mods List - can be found towards the bottom of any of my mod pages (Description). UPDATED: 03/05/2015

    I am now convinced that iPresentInterval=1 should be a required setting in Skyrim.ini for all players. The game engine gets confused and timing is off when FPS is over 60. Since most LCD/LED screens have a default refresh rate of 60, setting vsync on (iPresentInterval=1) will cap FPS at 60. Enabling vsync in the ENB and/or video driver and not in Skyrim.ini still creates game engine issues.

    My Skyrim mod offerings:

    Combat Evolved
    Skyrim Guides and Tutorials
    Longer Durations and Annoyance Fixes
    Backup Movement Speed Reduction
    Animal Tweaks
    Marked for Death

    I found out some bad news for users of Windows 8 and 10. Microsoft unintentionally limited graphic memory usage to 4 GB for DirectX 9 applications. Skyrim is a DirectX 9 application. The limit doesn't appear to exist on Windows 7. So much for my 6 GBs of VRAM on my new videocard! Microsoft stabs me in the back yet again!

    Boris developed a tool that tells you how much video memory is supported on your system and the value that you should use for VideoMemorySizeMb= in enblocal.ini. Run the DirectX 9 executable.

    So even though I have 6 GBs of VRAM I have to set VideoMemorySizeMb=4064.

    You shouldn't set VideoMemorySizeMb to a value above your VRAM unless you are on a low end system with little to no VRAM and that is the only way you can run the game. I've used the formula VRAM - 128 which has worked very well. The problem with using system memory for graphics is that once Skyrim starts using system memory there are long delays for texture rendering. This usually results in an FPS drop of 50%, ouch!

    If you are using an ENB you need to check the last setting in Injector.ini (in your Skyrim folder) and make sure it is set to:

    weird_steam_hack = 1

    This should be set regardless if you are using Steam Overlay or not. I recommend that Steam Overlay be disabled in Steam (settings).

    I am now recommending the following Utility to help you optimize your Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini: spINI

    Always keep backups of the following files:

    Skryim.ini
    SkyrimPrefs.ini
    SkyrimEditor.ini
    SkyrimEditorPrefs.ini
    plugins.txt
    loadorder.txt

    In fact, once I have my files configured perfectly I flag them as read-only to prevent the Skyrim Launcher from messing them up. Don't do this with the Editor INI files though.

    I've found the following setting in Skyrim.ini helps quite a bit with all scripted mods:

    [Papyrus]
    fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=2000

    The default setting Skyrim uses is 500.

    It gives the scripts extra time to finish processing and helps to avoid CTDs caused by scripts.

    This setting was added by spINI.

      You have way too much script spam in your papyrus log. I would start by eliminating most mods that contain scripts. Remove Civil War Overhaul and other script heavy mods. Aside from my recommended mod list, if the mod contains scripts remove it from your game. You will never get this under control unless you do so. Also, follow my guide closely and don't uninstall or add mods mid-game.

      Never re-order the mods in your load order. Once you start a new game you must leave your load order alone (I know it's very hard). Start with my recommended mods and leave everything else out until you get a stable game.

      The key is to start with a small mod list and build slowly from there. If you throw 200 mods into a new game you'll never know what mod/s are causing the issues. You don't need a save game manager. I manually save every 10 - 15 minutes in game.

      okay, when it comes to patching manually via tes5edit because a lot of stuff from modds are being overwritten from others which makes those mods not work well, even if the load order is changed it does the same but viceversa. am i better off just not touching tes5edit for manual patches and just like LOOT, then tes5edit merged patch only, then bashed patch, and forget about manually patching?

      I do some manually patching for mods that aren't constantly being updated anymore. Most mods that are still being actively developed and supported I fix with a full load order TES5Edit patch. That way if I update the mod I don't have to re-do all the edits and manually edit the mod's esp (all the fixes are preserved in the TES5Edit patch).

      I delete all leveled list settings from my TES5Edit patch since Wrye Bash does a better job of merging the leveled lists. Both patches should be at the end of your load order. Be careful not to rearrange the mods in your load order once you start a new game. This is why you shouldn't remove or add mods mid-game.

      For now, I would only use the scripted mods I recommend. The list is at the bottom of the Description page on all of my mods. There are five types of mods that are known to cause issues in Skyrim unless they are done near perfectly:

      1. Scripted mods
      2. Animation mods
      3. Lighting mods
      4. Weather mods
      5. LOD mods

    I was wondering, if one was to install all the Highly Recommended Mods including the encounters for high end machines and all the highly recommended graphics mods all together... + using spinis Ultra settings. how would this type of machine do with them ?
    Spoiler:
    Show

    - windows 10 64bit
    - Skylake I5 6600k oc 4.4ghz stable
    - HyperX Fury 16gb of DDR4 oc 3000mhz stable
    - Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX960 4GB SSC Edition
    - Water Cooled cpu (corsair h80iv2) so that is noproblem
    - the whole system is super fan cooled, like... super ^^ i spend days building the machine this winter :p
    so i am limited to 4064mbs of VRAM and like 3000mbs of game ram ?

    and if i add in Falskaar and Wyrmstooth thats tonys fault - i saw his mod list and ive never used those before
    i already have a stable basegame vanilla build - see spoiler
    Spoiler:

    ive been asking around a lot today and ive come to the conclusion that Id prefer a SoT modded game, and some graphical retex to lightly freshen up the games looks.

      I would use whatever enbseries version that ENBOOST recommends.

      thx.. I am now just about to test profile 4... all the encounters ve added. I already have a stable basic SoT Profile (falskaar & wyrmstooth in it). so i added genesis, immersive creatures, OBIS, Deadly Wenches, imm wenches, northern encounters, animal tweaks, imm patrols, belly's new dragons, deadly drags, dragon combat overhaul. combat evolved. not in that order. hopefully ive done it all right. from reading everything on each mods page, the SoT mod and site pages and here, they should be if i follow the proper load order and patches........

    Hi,boss:
    I've found massive error message metion about "CritterDragonFly.psc","CritterFish.psc"and stuff. Later on I discovered a script fix called"_bugfix_critter_scripts (experimental v2.6)". Since the release date is in 2013, I was wondering if the latest USKP had fix it or not.
    Thanks for any reply!

      Not that I know of. Both of those you have to manually perform so I doubt they would add support for it in the INI files but who knows.

    Goodday BOSS!
    Thanks for the tutorial. It rectify lots of my wrong ideas bout MOD. Anyhow, I'm little confused about this line"Players can sometimes get away with adding small mods that make very specific game changes but there is always a danger with doing so. ". Do you suggest player should adding all selected mods before starting a new game? I've done it once then wierd thing happend: the carriage keep rolling and never reach Helgen.

      Yes and no. The game you are actually going to complete and play all the way through should have every mod installed that you wish to use. It is a good idea to install a few mods at a time and play through Helgen to see if the added mods broke anything. Once you've tested your full load order THEN go ahead and start a new game that you will use until you finish.

      Adding mods mid-game is dangerous as per my guide. Sometimes you can get away with adding small mods that touch very little and won't break your save games but it isn't recommended. The best scenario is to not touch your load order AT ALL until you finish that character/play through and are ready to start a new game.

      Happy gaming!

    First off,thanks so much for your guide, and proving that its possible to have 60+ enemies with no CTD,HOLY POTATO haha.
    Anyways, regarding your section "Why Too Many Mods Can Hurt Your Game" do you mean the number of esps, or the number of items added by mods?Like,if I merged 30+ armor mods, will it make a difference to the save game in the long run? Thanks (Current ESP count is 240+)

      I mean mods that add large changes to the game which are mostly ESPs. Armor and weapon mods are usually safe. Scripted and SKSE mods are the ones that can really cause issues in your game. If you view my current load order in my last sticky you will see that I dropped many of the heavily scripted mods from my game. I have over 120 hours invested and my game is still ultra stable. It is important to be selective in your mod choices and to not over-mod your game based on your skill level and your system specs.

    I searched the keywords "after bashed patch" in sands of time mod and found this interesting comment from you.

    "I actually go through each and every mod in my load order using TES5Edit. I examine every mod and look for conflicts. This is made easier by loading all of the mods in TES5Edit and then click on the last mod - right-click and select 'Apply Filter for Cleaning'. This will highlight all mod conflicts. Major conflicts will be in highlighted in red and minor/insignificant conflicts will be highlighted in green. I then examine every conflict and make notes and then make custom load order placements in LOOT or BOSS based on what I find. This process takes several hours but it is well worth the effort!"

    How did you go about creating that custom load order. Did you get rid of the reds? Then how? What did you do to examine conflicts exactly?

      I create custom rules in BOSS based on what I find. For example, if I find that one mod keeps conflicting with other mods above it and I want to preserve the mods settings I will move it above the mods it is conflicting with. I order the mods to produce the best compatibility scenario.

      Some of the mods in red will always be red. All conflicts cannot be resolved due to the way TES5Edit labels the conflicts. For example, some conflicts are caused by the official DLCs and Unofficial Patches. You should never edit these files. Mods that conflict with them will always be highlighted in red.

      I go through each mod in my load order using TES5Edit and go through all the red, orange, and sometimes green highlighted items and examine the differences line by line. I drag over the settings that I want to use and drop them in the last mod in the list for that particular setting.

      There is this one of a kind mod called "Grandmaster' that that author recommends to put last in load order. This mod is very script resourceful, Until very recently I never thought inserting it before bashed patch will and let other mods override it would improve stability. Now some of the mods features (which require scripts) don't work, but the core features are intact. It's using less scripts now, which is a good thing, because when all of it's feature are active, I suspect it's producing CTD when loading a save (not autosave) from the menu. Well now because of my load order rearranging, those situation are uncommon. You should make a video about what you did in Tes5edit, like how you drag over settings and stuff.

    I have been noticing a subtle difference between Default [Papyrus][General] and 4 Cores/Tweaked Papyrus [Papyrus][General] in Skyrim.ini

    Default [Papyrus][General] is optimal, temperature on all cores are lower then the 4 core ini,
    but when one has many mods that compete for resources exteriorly especially, Skyrim Immersive Creatures for instance; 4 cores ini seems to perform better. I have seen 99% usage of my 3770K at 4.4ghz when using 4 cores ini, never seen this with default ini.
    4 core ini works my quad core cpu deeper hence higher temperatures. Yet I am still conflicted to which is ini is better. I keep thinking the ini that works your CPU more is ideal, quite opposite for GPU. My current papyrus setting performs better then default papyrus setting when it comes to executing "Powers" in magic.
    Default papyrus would delay me a tad or not perform at all when 80+ npcs are visible. Speaking of current settings, now I have SSME set to Block1 769MB Block2 512MB. The oddity in this is Block2 never actually fills up to 512MB, but Block1 does. When CTD happens, no more then 256MB is shown in Block2. Very strange to me. Anyway I'm currently using this:

    [General]
    sLanguage=ENGLISH
    uGridsToLoad=5
    sIntroSequence=DISABLED.BIK
    iNumHWThreads=4
    iHWThread6=3
    iHWThread5=3
    iHWThread4=3
    iHWThread3=2
    iHWThread2=2
    iHWThread1=2
    iAIThread2HWThread=3
    iAIThread1HWThread=2
    iRenderingThread2HWThread=1
    iRenderingThread1HWThread=0
    bRunHighLevelProcess=1
    bMultiThreadMovement=1
    bUseThreadedParticleSystem=1
    bUseThreadedBlood=1
    bUseThreadedMorpher=1
    bUseThreadedTempEffects=1
    bUseThreadedTextures=1
    bUseThreadedMeshes=1
    bUseThreadedLOD=1
    bUseThreadedAI=1
    bUseHardDriveCache=0
    fFlickeringLightDistance=8192

    [Papyrus]
    fUpdateBudgetMS=1000.0
    fExtraTaskletBudgetMS=20.0
    fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=2000.0
    iMinMemoryPageSize=128
    iMaxMemoryPageSize=512
    iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=153600
    bEnableLogging=0
    bEnableTrace=0
    bLoadDebugInformation=0
    bEnableProfiling=0

    If I change fExtraTaskletBudgetMS=20.0 to anything higher then some "Powers" in magic will lag indefinitely.

    I'm interested to know what SKSE build you are using and are you still using that skyrim.INI [Papyrus][General] at this time?

      I don't recommend those settings as per my guide. My Skyrim configuration is found in my third sticky. I don't mess with papyrus settings. Bad things happen every time I've done so. It isn't due to a lack of knowledge but quite the opposite. Some things are best left alone. Just because something is moddable doesn't mean it is best to do so.

      View my top sticky for proof that my 'How to Have the Best Modded Skyrim Experience' guide works. All that was done with default papyrus settings and barely edited INI files.
