For anyone that's interested, I've added a new, stand alone utility for browsing DDS images called "DDS Image Basic Browser". It's a very simple Windows Explorer like browser which can be used to view any DDS image.
All files which are uploaded to Nexus are scanned before becoming available.
This is true also for the Skyrim DDS Image Viewer which you can see scan results here: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/167a9d9277b786469f4d301902e5bee04b9809d173acd4a24880ae4c197b5e57/detection/f-167a9d9277b786469f4d301902e5bee04b9809d173acd4a24880ae4c197b5e57-1407479733
I also personally scan with Kaspersky before uploading and both Kaspersky and Nexus report that it's clean.
Did you download it from here on Nexus or from somewhere else?
I've just uploaded a brand new, completely rewritten version of the viewer. The Nexus virus scan is reporting that it is clean, so I am standing by that: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/43a050116d5d630f3776beb039e177f02c7eafffe05864433061f39d6ae54509/detection/f-43a050116d5d630f3776beb039e177f02c7eafffe05864433061f39d6ae54509-1706143327
This is a Beta version so if you choose to try it, please let me know what you think, thanks!
No malware has been detected by online VirusTotal on my side. The Viewer is working. I noticed one thing that I found inconvinient: - I was not able to adjust the column width:
I'm having the same problem. ESET determines that there is a threat and can't extract the file. It may be a false positive, but it doesn't change the fact that I can't use Viewer.
Nexus scans all files uploaded with a comprehensive list of anti-virus software. The report for the viewer is here and shows that it is clean: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/633b1f0cf8348dd5838a48d9d241b2b787079dbd078ce6638f6970735d91e611/detection/f-633b1f0cf8348dd5838a48d9d241b2b787079dbd078ce6638f6970735d91e611-1706393898
Unfortunately I've not done this myself so I'm unable to recommend an editor. I did find this which also mentions Adobe Photoshop: https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/DDS_texture_tools
I'm a bit stuck on setup. I've only ever dragged and dropped mods into my games so this kind of stuff is new to me...
In my Skyrim folder where the BSA files are, I don't have "Skyrim - Textures.bsa" or "HighResTexturePack01.bsa" I have a series of files called "Skyrim - Textures0.bsa, Skyrim - Textures1.bsa, Skyrim - Textures2.bsa" and so on.
Basically, I'm not sure why my files are different than those in the image you provided and I'm not sure how I should be setting up this tool.
The various .bsa files should be located in this folder, assuming you have the main Steam library installed on your C drive: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Data
If you take suggestions for this, I would like to suggest the ability to open dds files like how you would with pngs and an image viewer. At the moment when I set this as my default program for opening dds files it brings me to the last place i was when i used it last. It would be quite convenient to be able to use this like any other file viewer instead of having to navigate to the file i want to view with your explorer. Sorry if that didnt make much sense, i can try and re-explain it.
For it to behave more like a default viewer for dds files, you would prefer it to load images like so? I mean when double-clicking on any dds file from Windows Explorer, to have it simply show this?
That should be pretty easy to do.
Please let me know, thanks!
UPDATED: I just uploaded a new utility for this: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/108272
i have windows 10, tried to use this but got an immediate "imageviewer stopped working"......am i doing something wrong or this isn't compatible with windows 10 at all? (like it seems from the description)
I'm able to run them successfully on Windows 10, which makes me think it may be an issue on your system.
Are you running the tool in the same folder where the files were unzipped? The main exe file and all other files must be together in the same folder. If any of the included files are missing, then it will not work.
When an application fails to start (like the message in your first post), it creates an entry in the Windows Event Viewer. Try this.. start the application again, and when it crashes, looks for a recent entry in the Event Viewer. If you find one that is related, post it here and I'll take a look.
I would like to install say Sexy Solitude, there are things I don't like and would like to only install certain parts of, could I use this mod to just take a look at the downloaded file with this programme? Or would I have to install it then use this to sort out what I don't like?
So glad I finally found this! Like a previous poster, I recently installed all of the "sexy ..." mods for towns, and there was one wall texture that I really hated, but couldn't figure out what it was. Went through them all with this tool (not too hard with the filter feature), found the offending texture, and deleted it. Viola, all is right in Tamriel again. Thanks!

The Skyrim DDS Image Viewer v3.0 BETA 2 is now available, which primarily has these changes:

Why don't you check the exe with VirusTotal and let me know if there is any difference in result?
I suspect that this is likely a false positive, but this is also an old build from 2013 (10 years already wow).
So to be safe, I archived the file so that it is no longer available to download.
I will plan on having an updated version by this weekend.
Best Regards!

- I was not able to adjust the column width:
I will plan on enhancing the column width adjustment in the next beta update -- most likely by this weekend.
UPDATE: I just uploaded v3.0 BETA 2 which has better column resize behavior.
Best Regards!
ESET determines that there is a threat and can't extract the file.
It may be a false positive, but it doesn't change the fact that I can't use Viewer.
I submitted a report to ESET Malware Response Team and they responded.
Now I can use the viewer.

Small, fast, simplicity.
Thanks.

Does this application allow the viewing of n.dds and s.dds files as found in Fallout 4?
Apparently the "n" in "n.dds" stands for "normals" and the "s" in "s.dds" stands for "specularity", and neither seem to be viewable.
Every application I've tried so far fails (crashes to desktop) when I try and view either format. Only the "d.dds" (diffuse) files can be viewed.
---
The Image Browser tool should be able to do that (under Optional files section).
There's a checkbox to uncheck, but it should work (have not tried it myself).
If you try, please let me know what you think.
Best Regards!
sorry for bad english.....if was bad
Either way, both should work fine with Windows 10.

edit: no succes......i think is really an issue on my system as you said......any advice?

however thanks for trying to help me, endorse and kudos

I'm looking for something exactly like this mod...
Thanks
Best Regards!
However, in the meantime, your standalone utility for browsing DDS images is GREAT and doing just what I need for now. Thank you much!
Thank you for the kind feedback.
As it turns out, the standalone one is actually the "smaller version" as mentioned previously
Best Regards!

There are various tools out there that already do that. Here's one example:

Best Regards!
Thanks so much for this tool.
I would suggest, to add this last feature named: "support viewing a folder with DDS files". because it would be a really helpful feature.
Take Care and C U Soon !!!
Currently the DDS Image Viewer is a compare tool. Do you mean add the ability like a simple viewer; like Windows Explorer viewing images?
Thanks for your answer and sorry for the BIG delay in my answer too.
The new " DDS Image Basic Browser " is the tool i was meaning in my first comment. Thanks for that, very usseful tool too.
Take Care and C U Soon !!!
