To be authentic, when Damascus steel was made it had patterns in the steel from a combination of the hard and soft steels, but unless the blade was very old and rusted you would not have the raised texture.
Later copiers of Damascus steel tried to copy the raised texture of old rusted Damascus steel, but didn't understand how to create the actual steel untill the last 100 years.
So if you find a Damascus blade that is new with this raised texture pattern, know that it is a fake.
