Um, none of the blacksmiths sell any of the books. I'm already Level 70 at smithing and the only book I found is Ebony Smithing (at Ysgrammor's Tomb near his coffin). Or do I need the "Merchant" perk (i.e. be able to buy and sell any item with any merchant)?

EDIT: Turns out only some Blacksmiths do (eg Warmaidens at Whiterun doen't have it, and neither does Alvor from Riverwood).

EDIT2: Strangely, I found a copy of the Orcish Smithing book at the Dawnstar Sanctuary (during the "The Cure for Madness" quest where you're in pursuit of Cicero).

Yup, this is the "compatible" version, which leaves out some of the blacksmiths (along with many other things, see PerkPointLess Smithing.)

Yup, I've added some leveled perk books at the end of each of the major quest lines as some kind of reward.

This mod sounds good, but it also sounds a bit too cheaty. Let me explain. So you have 80 in Smithing, and put your perk somewhere else. You find a book about Ebony, and you get a free perk without requiring a levelup. Or am I reading this wrong?

Also... over 16,000 daggers to get to 100 in Smihing!? Geeze, that's a lot of work.

You're reading it right, I know this is a bit cheaty, but I wanted to add a bit more realism, and with all that mods out there that add some perks (and one in development by myself), I thought it was ok to ease the progress on a non combat related skill

and the number 16324 was completely made up to showcase my point, I didn't count them all along :-P

Due to the random nature of this mod, there is no "guaranteed location" of some books...

@ TheBrokenMachine & duke0196tes: This mod is thought as an addition to the vanilla perk spending system. You still can add perk points to gain the perks. In order to learn the perks through the books, you need to have the required smithing skill level (e.g. 90 for daedric). Some perks also require you to have an other perk unlocked (e.g. daedric needs ebony, glass needs elven), while others (like advanced armors or dragon armors) don't (but still need the apropriate skill level). This mod is also meant to cause no problems when activated and deactivated throughout a playthrough several times. Somewhen this week I think I will release my evolution of that mod that adds a lot more features at the cost of a lesser compatibility tho other mods and a bit lesser fitting when activated mid-game.

Apologise for my delay in responding. Thank you for the feedback. I use your mod to complement my gaming. I take advantage of the books but I still spend a point when necessary. For instance, I seldom complete the Main Quest any more so I need to spend a point for Dragon Armour since I don't normally go to the Hall of Valour. Cheers.

@ The Broken Machine ... Yes, I'm pretty sure the Books have the same basic restrictions of Skill and Perk requirements.

I agree that I too would have liked a Dragon Smithing book at the Temple. I've played through a few times but have only completed the main quests a couple of times.

@ everyone: Sorry, I've abandoned Skyrim mods for a while, had some other things to do...
currently I'm working on my new smithing overhaul called "PerkPointLess Smithing", wich completely removes the ability to spend perk points for smithing, replacing it with the book-method I started here. I'll try to take all of your comments into account, but at the same time keeping it balanced and lore-friendly. Due to my PC being repaired (again!) and I'm forced to work on an old laptop where skyrim doesn't run, release may take some time...

@ TheBrokenMachine: It were both katanas and dai-katanas (dai-katanas are the two handed versions of the one handed katanas) as well as the tantos, wakizashis and all other far-east-culture inspired stuff seen in morrowind. My current fear is that this will make the game unbalanced, allowing crafting of dragon armor and weapons even at relatively low levels. It would be a verry lore-friendly solution, indeed, but I don't want to give away the strongest smithing perk for free...
PS you're not the only one ;-)

Seen in Morrwind, Arena, Dagerfall, Oblivion... Why the were katana-like wepons so rare in Skyrim? The Blades Swords were katanas and Ebony Blade was a Dai-Katana... I can see them not being as PROMINENT, but not as RARE. I guess that's what 200 years did, though.

Also looking at it, since I haven't used the mod yet, but there are restrictions? Like, I can pick up the Daerdic Smithing book but won't learn it until you have 90 XP in Smithing and the Ebony perk?

Ta for the update. No worries. I think we all know how it is to have a PC go down.

That's a big help! Tiny criticism, I'd like to face off against Alduin in dragon armor and dragon weapons. If it's possible, the Dragon book would be well-placed in Sky Haven Temple. The Blades were influenced by the Tsaesci race when they occupied Tamriel. During this time, they taught crafting dragonscale armor and katanas (or was it dai-katanas?) to the Blades and men.

Alas, I am a TES lore nerd...

Whenever I do another playthough, I'm using this for certain!

Can you make an optional version witch removes skills requirements for learning the books ?
