Store bought versions require Steam Activation, it is a Steamworks only title. If you did buy it in a store, at some point you still had to register it on Steam. And therefore, you play it on Steam. In which case, the screenshots are then found in the userdata folder in your steam folder. You can access it by right clicking the game in Steam, and hitting "show images" then hit the "show on disk button."
