Any recommendations for the style of either Markarth or Riften? For Riften, I'm split between the fact that nobody is to be trusted (cutpurses everywhere), and the fact that the place is a depressing and hopeless slum.
If it helps, I'm trying to stick to the Golden Sun (all three games) and Shadow of the Colossus soundtracks.
You (and everyone else) might find this to be a bit silly but there are actually some Ace Combat soundtracks that I like to use for Riften.
Huh. I do have at least a few tracks from the Golden Sun games that match that style, so I'll give it a shot!
My main problem with Markarth is that all the Golden Sun tracks that have an impressive city-feel are oriental, while Markarth is steeped in Dwemer culture, so it is thus not very oriental.

Jeremy Soule is doing a symphony for Kickstarter. https://www.facebook.com/NorthernerSymphony The music he's making sounds perfect for Skyrim, so when there's download/buying options, I'm adding his stuff right away.
Edit: His SoundCloud has some great stuff that I'll be adding to my game's music.
Some of the music that I added really surprised me because I didn't believe they'd actually fit in:
Eternal Sonata:
An Important Person (Castle) (Now If only I could get this to only play in the Palace of the Kings)
The mediocrity sought out by everyone. (Castle) (Ditto for the Blue Palace)
Underground for Underhand (Dungeon)
Illuminant lives (Explore - night)
Endure and Resist (Tavern)
The Zelda temple mis for the various dungeons: Forest Temple (Caves), Water Temple (Ice), Shadow temple (Tombs)
To name a few, I've also got some Tales of. music playing as well. In the end I'm rather surprised how many different kinds of music fit in this game.
Its just to bad I can't separate music by castles. The Stormcloaks would have war drums playing to signify their battle spirit. While the Imperials would have violins playing, something that says high society.

Game of Thrones (Seasons 1-3)
The Hobbit I
Some tracks may need little editing so they fit perfectly.
I loved this rendition of Mhaura. Very raw and it sounds just about right for any tavern or town. It's in poor quality, though.

Sand Island from Ace Combat 5
Sadly from Ace Combat 4
It might be too melancholy and not enough depressed, but I that's what I use!
