I'd like to mention that this mod only makes the riekling barrels match the SMIM barrels if you choose the default options. Choosing the option for a texture that's closer to vanilla makes the riekling barrels stand out with this mod. As for that, the barrels with that option look virtually identical to the riekling barrels. As best as I can tell, the riekling barrels are just slightly lighter. Perhaps you should look into making a patch for that option, if you don't want to though, its not really that big of an issue. I can only just see a difference if I zoom into barrels with the eagle eye perk, and even then I can only really notice a difference if a riekling barrel is right next to a smim barrel.
To be honest I could never understand why one would wish to be sealed in a barrel for an indetermined period on the off chance that an enemy might pass by within... not just striking distance but also within the lifetime of the Riekling chosen.
However, I commend your goal and will add it to my playlist as at least now I can be surprised... a bit!
Well I assume the riekling in barrels are actually patrolling there and when they hear or sense presence, they hide themselves in a barrel and when they see it's enemy, they come out of barrel and attack
Ah!, thanks for your view there, I'd really never thought along those lines... I'd always figured it was just one of those 'Bethesda' things like candles still burning in a long abandoned mineshaft, and fresh apples and bottles of Honningbrew mead found in a tomb that's been sealed for a thousand years.
I'll be honest, I never really noticed this. Possibly because the barrels normally explode before you get really close to them, and when they do, you obviously have more important things to look at than barrels. Still, I guess I'll keep this installed whenever I have SMIM enabled.
For me, I always noticed this and at that moment I knew that the different barrel is going to explode but now all barrels look the same and I don't know which one is going to explode

You have to ask wankingskeever about this in SE page of this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/43306

As you said, those are just bethesda things
