Wow! I finally had a chance to really experience your mod itself, as it currently exists. I've always played a thief/assassin and never once put a single perk into the lock-picking tree. Why bother? Even at the smallest skill level, it wasn't that bad trying to pick a Master lock if you had the patience. Couple of minutes and BAM! Open.
Now? I spent four minutes and six picks trying to pry open an Adept level chest with level 40 in lock-picking and no perks. This isn't a good thing. This is an AMAZINGLY AWSOME thing! For anyone who enjoys a challenge and thinks that specializing is important - that not every character concept should excel at every single thing in the game - this is for you. Previously, the sweet-spots were so wide-open that if you just paid attention and fiddled with the mouse you'd kill every single lock in a couple of seconds, regardless of in-game skill. Now? For once, I actually have to think about how many lock picks I have on hand. Is it worth it to spend 20+ minutes feeling out this Expert level chest? Again, low-skill, no perks. Speaking as someone who not only misses the 8-bit era level of challenge in a video game, but has actually practiced at and successfully picked several locks in real-life (I owned them, it's a pointless hobby) this mod is absolutely essential! This is less a mod and more what the game should have been from the very beginning. I've already endorsed and damn it, I wish I could endorse again. This deserves to be seen by more people, no question.
You, good sir, have completely sold me on this mod. I have definitely been looking around for mods that will make my second play through of this game better than the first, and at first I was on edge about this mod. But your enthusiasm and description of this mod got me very excited about installing it
i know you are not the creator and everything, but I just wanted to say thank you to you for your wonderful description, as well as thank you to the amazing Fluffkins
@Mattphair @agunsthemagi @Jupiah: Yeah I've been looking into that a lot. I ended up hitting a wall when I couldn't find the script for lockpicking in the original game (there were actually a lot of scripts I couldn't find...), and so I gave up on the idea. @Backhausen: Verbal endorsements are better than numbers anyway Thanks!
Sounds good, I've been playing for over 80 hours and I've picked every lock I've ever come across without ever investing a perk in lockpicking. Even master locks never take me longer than a minute and 5-8 lockpicks to open. Looking forward to trying this out, maybe I'll need to buy some actual perks.
About real-time lockpicking, you should look at this mod: http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=41486 That's a real-time lockpicking mod for Oblivion, the author even recreated the lockpicking minigame from Skyrim and Two Worlds II and imported them to Oblivion. It's awesome.
Besides just shrinking the sweet spots, another idea I had for making lockpicking harder would be to have the sweet spot's location reset whenever you break a lock. They already do this if you exist the minigame and re-enter it on the same container, so I think it should be possible to script.
I'm glad someone else likes it too. I spent some time ACTUALLY PLAYING THE GAME today, and you know what? Lock Picking isn't a nuisance anymore, it's actually a bit challenging, and rather fun.
Also, I did lol at your arrow in the knee... xD I never get tired of that joke.
Hey, no problem. Glad I'm some kind of help. I think I'll talk to some of my friends who are in good at the Bethesda forums. Some of them have contact with the actual devs. Might be able to point us in the right direction.
Now that you mention it, I bet you can use the straight vanilla stuff in the CK to implement crippled limbs and such. Honestly, I'm not sure why they didn't crossover a lot more gameplay elements between their Fallout and TES games. We don't need VATS in Skyrim, but I'd very much like to see some real consequences for someone taking an arrow to the knee.

(I'm so sorry, I had to.)
