Concerns with Black Filled Soul Gems not Converting to Varla I searched everywhere in the code and it turns out that there's no ID for the naturally-occuring Grand-filled Black Soul Gems. Both filled and unfilled Black Soul Gems have the same ID. One in the console (that i used in my script) is a completely separate black soul gem (rest assured i made sure not to touch the quest soul gems). Because of this, I decided to remove the "filled" requirement of black soul gems and any non-quest black soul gems will do. I will put the Varla Stone Conversion onto a different spell. This will now work.
Empty Grand Soul gems and Non-Grand Grand Soul Gems are Converted into Empty Black Stones with a 1 to 1 Conversion Ratio Due to the Existence of Necro Altars
Version 2: 2 Petty → 1 Lesser 3 Lesser → 1 Common 2 Common → 1 Greater 2 Greater → 1 Grand *1 Non-empty non-grand Grand → 1 Black 2 Black → 1 Varla Stone (separate)
Version 3 requested by supremedesupizza: 2 Petty → 1 Lesser 3 Lesser → 1 Common 2 Common → 1 Greater *2 Greater → 1 Black *1 Non-Grand Grand → 1 Black 2 Black → 1 Varla Stone (Separate Spell)
No idea whether this is a big ask, but is it possible for a version just for black soul gems? Converting empty Grand ones to Black ones. So sorry in case I'm asking too much or maybe there is an easy way to edit the .esp to take out all the ones except that one conversion that I could do on my own. Appreciate you.
This is possibly out of your interest- but it involves soul gems so i figured i'd ask!
i'd love to know if you'd think about doing a mod [similar to one in skyrim] that makes it so you can always fill your soulgems. for example: you kill something with a 'grand' soul and only have a 'large' so the 'grand' soul gets converted into 'large' and fills the gem anyway. I find myself struggling to fill gems because I lose track of what type of enemy has what 'size' soul.
Great idea. I edited it to just have the Varla stone spell and use filled grand soul gems and it makes keeping all my weapons charged up so much less frustrating.
2 Petty → 1 Lesser 3 Lesser → 1 Common 2 Common → 1 Greater 2 Grand → 1 Black 2 Filled Black → 1 Varla Stone
I Installed the first version of the mod that not exclude the Grands, But no matter if my black gems are filled with any kind of Soul, they are not getting converted into Varla.
Plus, it looks like now the other version (excluding Grand-filled Grands) is actually converting 2 Greater to 1 empty Grand and then 2 empty Grand to 1 Black. Since Grand and Black are roughly equivalent in value and usage, this is actually worse than in the non-modded vanilla game where you only need a single Grand to convert to a single Black at the Shade of the Revenant altars.
Personally, I'd rather that black gems NOT convert to Varla, or at least that be an optional separate spell, so that it's not doing that conversion currently actually is a benefit imo.
that's odd. the wiki only states that there only 2 kinds of black soul gems. grand-filled blacks and empty. you're able to get lesser souls to be filled? ill take note of that thank you. will make some changes soon
UPDATE: @Shenkay Blacks (filled or unfilled) now convert to varla. I put it in a separate spell. Thanks for pointing out this huge problem
@thomwatson yeah that's an oversight. where empty grands get included in the conversion. ill make the changes where in the excluded grand-filled grand version where empty grands don't get included (but any grand souls that aren't grand-filled like lesser/petty/greater/common filled grands will be included in the conversion as they can't be reused anyway and they're literally the same as the soul they contain
Thank you for the fix, Its a very great mode, Not too OP and let you make Gems more useful, I was tired of selling low level gems, now they have a new purpose.
Nice! Now we just need a mod that lists what kind of soul is in a soul gem without you having to use it and we'll be living the good life.
On that note, is there the possibility of having greater upgrade into black instead? Grand and Black are kind of the same thing so accidentally having filled grand soul gems turn into empty black would kinda suck if unintended, whereas greater is kind of only good for recharging once you have your hands on grands and blacks. Thanks!
ill make 2 alternate versions one where grand-filled grand gems wont be included in the conversion and another one where greater turns into black empty immediately
That being said, what should be my conversion rate? 2 greater per Black? 3 ? 4 ?
There's i think 2 azura star mods, and one that removes the timer on the necro altar. But the rest don't seem to have conversions like i did. I didn't check Oldblivion though if that's what you meant.
Just in reply to your first point, you know if you mouse over the soul gem and press the key for "show details" (H by default on keyboard off the top of my head), it tells you what soul is in it?
Given that one is getting additional utility out of it going black, 3 wouldn't be unreasonable, but given that it's already so close in capacity, 2 seems the sensible choice.
@Dragonheart yes and if one has memorized prices that can also work as a guide. It's still a terrible default UI for having them named identically and with the same icons.

Would love to see a version that caps out at making Grands and doesn't convert anything to Black SG or Varlas. Thanks for your work!
