FOTM interview with KDStudios

  • Comment
We are back with another FOTM interview. This one is for the winner of June. So today we bring you a interview with KDStudios from the Restoreout mod. It's a interesting read and we hope you all enjoy it.

Q. So tell us who KDStudios is. Is it just you? A friend or two?
A. Well it started out a few years ago. I were doing a computer course at college and met my girlfriend (Wiccan0witch) and a few other people there.
Long story short, we worked together on projects in my office and we all saved up for computer parts and made a few computers, then when we moved onto photography work we got graphics tablets and better scanners. It wasn't really an official "Studio" but we liked to call it a studio because of the tech and what we did. After a year or so though we all grew apart with each of us getting jobs and moving away. So what consisted of a group of 5 suddenly became 2. I still use all the tech in my modding work however and they send me some of their textures on occasion. Since joining the nexus a couple of users even joined up with us for a while and we still talk today.

Q. And how about you tell us a bit about your self. What are your favorite games? Mods?
A. Well I live in Wirral, England and I'm currently self employed, I build and repair computers for a living. While I'm not busy gaming or working I spend most of my free time with my girlfriend and family. Besides gaming and all things techie my main hobby is Photography and then drawing/editing.
My favourite games to date have to be Minecraft and Fallout 3. I have never put more time into them than anything else.

My favourite mods for Fallout 3 and New Vegas have to be anything from Bond123, his work is some of the most impressive stuff I have seen on the Nexus. Talon Company and The Borg by ZombieUK and finally US Army Operation Vegas by McclaudEagle.

Q. Can you tell us what inspired you to do this restoration project? What was your motivation, or who?
A. Restoreout came to mind when I was watching an episode of Fringe where this guy in a subway had the power to get others to feel how he feels. A woman dies and quite a bit of the episode is set in there. During that time I was in Meresti Station in Fallout 3. Then I endevoured to Restore the metro station to a pre-war station. Once I did that I noticed that a lot of my textures effected a lot of the Fallout world (Completely by accident). So from then on I decided to do the entire Wasteland and wanted to have a different view of what the world could have been. To add to the real RPG feel.

Q. What has been your favorite aspect of working on this mod?
A. Seeing the finished textures ingame was my favourite aspect, it really dawned on me how beautiful the textures are and could be. Nifskope didn't really do the textures much justice.

Q. Did you hit any rough spots? Anything that just totally stumped you for days?
A. Oh yes, lots of problems. There were a crashing issue caused by a car model I edited which actually broke the entire mod and I was forced to start from scratch. The biggest problem I had though was that the entire Geck was rendering all the textures as red (I have an image on F3 imageshare). This was horrible to work with and eventually I asked the nexus community for help and figured out the problem. I had to re-edit every single texture all over again and use the proper compression this time (oops), which was a very mundane task for about 1500 textures.

Q. Anything about the tool set that you would like to see improved on in the future if you could pick?
A. I'm not sure really, the Geck is really user friendly once you've watched a few tutorials. I'd like them to fix the Heightmap though. I've always wanted to make my own worldspace but it's too broken and causes the Geck to crash.

Q. What are some other common tools you used in your development?
A. The tools I used the most were Gimp 2.6 and Nifskope. I use dual screen so I have Nifskope open on one monitor while working on the texture in the other, then all I had to do was press CTRL+S to save it and I can see the texture on the model.

Q. I imagine when you started the mod it wasn't ready for release, so how long have you worked on it so far?
A. In its state at the time of starting it, releasing it weren't an option. So I decided to hold onto it until it was complete. I worked on it for the best part of a year. On and off mostly doing it in my free time.

Q. Any planned features for the mod that we are not expecting as of yet?
A. Well Restoreout for Fallout 3 is finished with for now. I may return to it in the future but who knows what it may bring?

Instead I will be working on my 3 current projects: Restoreout NV, Falloutcraft and Star Trek mod. All of which will take a long time to create.

Q. You mod for other games as well it seems. Do you prefer one game over the other when it comes to how it is modded?
A. Compared to other games, Bethesda's Oblivion, Fallout and New Vegas are the most easiest games to mod I have ever come across. The SDK is very user friendly and if you ignore it's bugs, a very pleasant piece of software. Some other games require a lot of knowledge to even edit textures nevermind editing parts of the game. So I'm glad Bethesda is supporting us modders

Q. Do you have any advice for aspiring mod authors?
[i]A. If you ever need help with something, ask on the forums or look for youtube tutorials. Most people are willing to help you. Modding for Fallout 3 is very easy once you watch Bethesda's tutorials and understand them. When I was new, I was completely lost until I watched them, whenever I was in doubt someone on the nexus was always there to help. Be patient. Modding is supposed to be fun, not a chore.

Q. And finally, do you have anything you would like to say to our readers out there?
A. I'd like to thank everyone who welcomed me back to the nexus, seriously it was really overwhelming! I'd like to thank all of the people who have endorsed and left feedback to all of my work. Most of all I'd like to thank everyone who voted for Restoreout. I put a lot of time into that and your votes really make me feel rewarded!

My personal thanks go to McclaudEagle, Bond123, RegentEagle, ZombieUK, Artemis84, Nimrod111, Murfy27, DrGrimm and my girlfriend Emma for their continued support throughout these past months. Seriously, thanks guys!

Thanks again to KDStudios for doing the interview. Keep up the great work! We will see you all back next month with another FOTM interview.

Would just like to say the honor of FOTM couldn't have gone to a more deserving individual.

Because I modded, and needed to see first hand the changes I made, I was unable to use your mod till I finished.

Now I can enjoy it and it makes a world of difference. You can play through an entire new experience in FO3 from start to finish.

I was so shocked to get the number 1 slot, as I was hoping just to be in the top 5.
    So yeah. Thanks a bunch.

    @2cooldays

Oh, another FOTM interview? I kinda missed these. Glad to see my vote didn't get wasted.

Anyway, congrats KD! Also, what regi8401 said. A restored wasteland isn't exactly my thing, but considering the amount of work that apparently went into it, this mod was definitely worthy of becoming FOTM.

I didn't like Restoreout so much, however I did enjoy KDStudios' KDS THE5 Combat Assistant. I would definitely say he deserved FOTM for that.
