    IMPORTANT NOTICE:

    Hey everyone,

There have been some recent changes that have caused me to take a step back and re-assess this guide and how it moves forward. It's been brought to my attention that the RockerBacon script that this guide (and my install script) depend on has been archived as of January 14th, 2025.

The script is still downloadable at this time but it is my assumption that it will no longer receive any updates to it. While I don't have any information to base this on; I also worry that the script could be made inaccessible at some point in the future. It is also clear that my install script has some glaring issues and there are some unclear instructions in the guide. Due to this, I am going to take an undetermined amount of time to try to figure out a new methodology for this guide to continue existing on Steam Deck.

Going forward, I am going to leave this Nexus page as it stands until a new install process can be created. Some of you have had great success with this mod guide, and others have had a plethora of issues. Because of this, it will remain for those who are able to enjoy it but I will no longer offer support on it.

Due to the nature of this situation, I will not be providing updates or an ETA. Honestly, I just don't know when I can get a stable installation and process running at this point. There are plenty of avenues to explore, but every option has a trade-off.

    Thanks,

    Darkforce146

    NOTE FROM THE GUIDE AUTHOR:

If you have issues getting the installer to run you need to do the following steps:
    1. Right click CheeseWheel.sh and select properties.
    2. Check 'Is executable'
    3. You will also need to do this for the uninstaller.

If the Protontricks installation asks you 'flathub' user or 'flathub' system; please choose 'user'. It has been reported that choosing 'system' will cause Mod Organizer 2's install to fail. If that fails, try the 'system' option after.

Controller layouts are not appearing on the Community Layouts section of Steam. This is a known issue and is up to Valve to fix. For now you can do the following:

The Mod Organizer 2 Profile will need to be copied manually based on the images I have provided.

The Oblivion Gameplay and Oblivion Reloaded Combined Layouts can be easily recreated by selecting a gamepad layout and copying the Grip Buttons as shown in the guide.

Sorry for the inconvenience, I am actively working on finding a fix for this but it we all may be at the mercy of Valve on this one. Please reach out to me if you have any other issues.

    Thanks!

One Last Note: A revised version of the installer is coming soon. There have been some issues with the current one such as typos and a few areas that require better explanation. I will release this as soon as I am able to.

Does this already include the 4GB RAM Patcher? Is that something that would even improve performance on a Steam Deck?

Regardless, I followed the guide completely on my Deck, using the 'A Pocket Full of Cheese Wheels (Vanilla Plus)' preset. (Despite the known issue of the installer showing it labeled as preset 2, if you type '3' it will install this preset.) My only addition was SimpleSavePlus and everything is functioning properly. I've only played a few hours but so far performance and stability is great. I did have a crash in the arena - just spamming jump and opened a door. Thanks for your hard work! I hope life allows you the time to come back to this project.

    UPDATE:
Played for about 10 hours total. Interior performance is near perfect. Open world performance can experience drops into high 40s during travel. Fairly consistent stuttering in the outdoors, but doesn’t feel too bad, especially if compared to the original 360 release. However, I am experiencing crashes. Always during loading screens. I’d wager more crashes than a typical ‘optimized’ Oblivion setup typically has. But it’s not dehabilitating. Every 1-2 hours it seems. Sometimes more often if I keep attempting the same crash (fast traveling while Imperial Guards volunteer to follow you in Kvatch caused a consistent crash. Also experienced some odd texture issues sparingly.
Add a save mod to the order, set it to every 3 minutes and the problem is mitigated. Just a minor annoyance now.

That being said, I’m having a blast and intend to keep playing. Just go into it knowing it’s not always perfect (as if Oblivion engine could ever be) but still it’s pretty damn good.

First of all, thank you for this guide and all the effort you put into it. Even though my job is programming, I find the modding world very difficult and deep, so contributions like this really make the process much easier for me.
I think I followed the guide step by step (Vanilla version), but I encountered two problems:

1: The mod Configurations Item Begone generates this error:

The masters for some plugins (esp/esl/esm) are not enabled.
The game will crash unless you install and enable the following plugins:

    Master
    Required By
    Cobl Main.esm
    CIBFilterPatch.esp
    DynamicMusicSystem.esp
    CIBFilterPatch.esp
    LegionCombatAdditions.esp
    CIBFilterPatch.esp
    Lovers with PK.esm
    CIBFilterPatch.esp
    Lovers with PK.esp
    CIBFilterPatch.esp
    LoversAdultPlayPlusforSSP.esp
    CIBFilterPatch.esp
    LoversRaperS.esp
    CIBFilterPatch.esp
    LoversVoiceSSPplus.esp
    CIBFilterPatch.esp
    Oblivion Subtle Sprint.esp
    CIBFilterPatch.esp

It seems strange, specially for the "Lover" ones. I don't know if I activate something by accident somehow. The only way I cant execute Oblivion is disabling this mod.

2: I found another error that isn't fatal, but I suppose is a problem, specially for the game not loading MenuQue and doesn't appear the Mods option in the settings. I installed manually both of the mods following the indications and receive the "ok" from MO2 to install them. The log I receive is:

You have one or more script extender plugins which failed to load!

If you want this notification to go away, here are some steps you can take:
      • Look for updates to the mod or the specific plugin included in the mod.
      • Disable the mod containing the plugin.
      • Hide or delete the plugin from the mod.

To refresh the script extender logs, you will need to run the game and/or editor again!

    The failed plugins are:
      • AddActorValues_CS version 16842496 (AddActorValues_CS.dll, AddActorValues) reported as incompatible during query.
      • OBSE_Kyoma_MenuQue_OLD version 0 (OBSE_Kyoma_MenuQue.dll, MenuQue - OBSE Plugin) reported as incompatible during query.

I'll continue trying, but I'll be thankful is someone helps me with that.

I was able to download everything successfully (I think) and chose the cheese for everyone preset, but when I load the game, it looks like vanilla Oblivion. Mod Manager has a variety of categories, but I don't see any mods on the list. What am I doing wrong?

You have to install the mods yourself. Look at the description and click the spoiler buttons based on which preset you picked.

Oh really? Wish I saw this before starting. The whole reason I wanted to use this is so I didn't have to manually install a massive list of mods

I was about to re-run the installer, had the same experience as you. I thought everything in the presets would be installed automatically, but it didn't happen for me: I don't see any mods in the list whatsoever, and the controller doesn't work correctly (I created the required layout as per the description).
Guess I gotta install them myself them, bummer

Hello, I’ve encountered an issue where I cannot get the LODgen to work due to missing masters. The CIB patch specifically is giving me issues, wondering if I could remedy this in any way

I ran into this issue, too! On the right side of MO2, click the "Plugins" tab (next to the "Archives", "Data", etc. tabs). Untick the box next to "CIBFilterPatch.esp", and slowLODGen should run normally.

    Howdy!

Phenomenal list and installer. Worked like a charm for me, no problems.

If I want to make some changes of my own to ORC's ini files, do I do that in the default one, or the provided ini files downloaded from this page? Or should I just put it in both to be safe?

I'm specifically just looking to turn the sleeping animation off as it drives me insane having to re-equip my weapon every time lmao.

You should be able to do that in game. Bind your grip buttons to CTRL and C. Press both at the same time to bring up ORC's menu. I believe it is the numpad Plus(+) and Minus(-) keys that toggle options on and off. You would press CTRL on each item you edit to save the changes (should give a notification at the top left saying "Changes Saved...".

If you aren't using the same version of ORC that is in the guide, you will have to take a look at the mod page to find the control scheme for your version and bind the controls accordingly.

I was able to get the pocket full of cheese wheels list to crash pretty consistently. Spamming custom spells with 1 duration will crash the game after about a minute or so

Script is kinda broken, there are issues such as Mod Organizer 2 pointing to tmp path which has restricted permission and makes the install fail. You have to modify the install.sh for the temp path to be re-located, but you have to do this after it is extracted, but before it is deleted.

Curious why not just inject MO2 into the Proton compatdata instead of installing a native MO2? What is the reason for this, as it is less self-contained?

Very good list! It requires a lot of time and effort (and restarts if you suck at reading directions) but pay off is good. Can't wait till your Cheese for Everyone preset to come out!

Do you did any setting tweaks in Oblivion Reloaded Combined? If so, then what tweaks in ORC.ini you did? I can't believe that Steam Deck can run basic configuration of ORC.

I was interested in this myself. Here are the differences. Default ORC.ini on the left, the Pocketful ORC.ini on the right. https://www.diffchecker.com/QwfV3usj/

Seems promising, thanks for answer. I will definitely try these settings on my modding try on Asus ROG Ally. I've got some big performance Issues after installing ORC and this config might help a lot, but we will see. Maybe the author changed even some more settings inside other shaders ini files too, I hope he doesn't :/.

okay, so this might be the dumbest thing to happen to someone:
after spending some hours installing all the mods manually because the nexus handler would not work, I realized I did not have the options in the dropdown menu besides the run button. I tried to add MSGUI and the other stuff manually, but it would not let me execute the batch files.
I got extremely frustrated and was short before giving up.
after reading everythin again i found my mistake:
I named the folder on the desktop PfoCW instead of PFoCW lol. I did not know linux terminal is case sensitive. I feel so dumb now.
another run of your script, everything works. Even the nexus handler works.
I cant wait to finally try out the game.
Wanted to share my story so people do not fall into that same trap :D
