Improves the atmosphere and appearance of GATES TO AESGAARD - Episode Two's overworld (Carhenia) + script improvements and a few other small tweaks.
Details
It seems to be unanimously agreed upon that the overworld (called Carhenia) featured in GATES TO AESGAARD - Episode Two is unnecessary and weird.
The main gameplay loop of the mod is "Travel through overworld to spooky dungeon. Complete spooky dungeon. Travel through overworld to next spooky dungeon."
The thing is, this overworld completely breaks the atmosphere and vibes of the mod. Its a horror mod that features cool spooky looking dungeons, but to get to those dungeons, you must travel through an extremely empty and vanilla looking overworld map.
The weather is almost always sunny and there are a lot of vanilla creatures wandering the place. If the music assigned to the world wasn't dungeon music, you'd probably think you were walking around the vanilla Cyrodiil map. Oh, right, and there's f*****g Triceratops and T-Rex (or at least as much of a t-rex as you can get from a modified Clannfear model) wandering the forests, and they use Jurassic Park soundclips for their animal noises. There's orange and black jungle tigers called "Tigger" (??????) wandering around out there too...
So yeah... its an incredibly bizarre and out of place inclusion in a very well done, and primarily linear, horror mod.
I made it my goal to turn the overworld map into something that at least feels like it belongs in a horror mod, so I set about tweaking a bunch of stuff about it.
I've played through both Aesgaard episodes a few times, and I honestly couldn't tell you what any of the story is.
There's guys that look like Cenobites... there's some order of knights that want to stop them... somewhere in there is a friend of the player character named Ashen Rose that sends them letters? I don't know.
So there's a possibility that my changes are incongruent with the story of Carhenia (the overworld map), but I don't care. I don't even know what Carhenia is supposed to be.
Overworld (Carhenia) changes
- The most noticeable change: The climate of the overworld has been altered to be spooky. A script will force the weather in the overworld to turn cloudy, dark, give the sky a red haze, and cause occasional thunder and lightning. This casts a spooky and earie glow over the entire map, making it look like something bad is going down in this place.
- Second most noticeable change: All hostile vanilla monsters in the overworld map have been removed from the leveled lists. In their place I have added leveled lists that spawn GATES TO AESGAARD - Episode Two exclusive undead creatures. Non-hostile creatures can still be (rarely) encountered (deer, sheep, wild horses).
- The ghost and Swamp Stalker enemies that spawn in the overworld were not part of the GATES TO AESGAARD - Episode Two exclusive cursed creatures faction. They have been added to the faction. Additionally, the cursed creatures faction has been given a -100 disposition level to the prey faction, so the monsters that spawn will chase after and attack the deer/sheep/wild horses that occasionally spawn.
- The Swamp Stalker has been renamed "Grave Stalker". Their base texture is a blend of SEDUCERS and Water Nymphs. Both variants have splotches of gore all over their skin, and blood around their mouth. The female variant is blue and the male variant is purple with thinner lips. It has had its sounds changed from Spriggan sounds to zombie sounds. Their height has been raised to 1.7. Now they loom over the player, like some kind of Slenderman figure. They have been added to more leveled lists and creature type has been changed to Undead.
- The Spider Spriggan has been renamed "Death Spider". It uses upper body skin textures from Beautiful Creatures - Spider Daedra, tinted green, with the black stripes removed from the face, and with ear textures added. The hair uses white hair textures from Rens Beauty Pack, and the spider portions of its body have been retextured with bloody wet gore. It has been added to more leveled lists and creature type has been changed to Undead.
- The T-rex and Triceratops creatures have been given vanilla Clannfear sounds (no more obnoxious Jurassic Park sounds). They have been retextured with bloody, rotting, stitched together skin, and have been given white undead eyes. Neither originally had names, so now the T-Rex creatures are called "Corpse Raptor" and the Triceratops creatures are called "Corpse Saurus". The Triceratops (now Corpse Saurus) has been given 100 confidence and aggression, and removed from the prey faction. They have been added to the cursed creatures faction and creature type has been changed to Undead.
- The vanilla wolf/timber wolf duplicates and vanilla rat duplicates have been renamed "Undead Wolf" and "Undead Rat". They have had red gore, zombie eyes, and exposed bone added to their textures. They have been added to cursed creatures faction, and added to more leveled lists and creature type has been changed to Undead. The standard wolf could swim, but the timber wolf could not. Now they both can swim. The wolves spawn in groups of 5.
- The Tiger has been retextured with bloody, rotting, stitched together skin, and given white undead eyes. It has been renamed "Rotting Cat" and added to more leveled lists and creature type has been changed to Undead.
- Udegnio Knights have been added to more overworld leveled lists, so you will encounter these guys more regularly.
- The unamed Will-o-the-Wisp enemies that wandered the overworld have been named "Lost Spirit" and creature type has been changed to Undead.
Non-overworld changes
- Similar to Gates To Aesgaard - Ep. 1 - Script Patcher and Quest Delayer, several scripts lacked "do once" conditions that prevented whatever command that script is outputting will fire off every frame that the game is active. There were also several object scripts that would fire off commands to set quest stages every time a player activated an object or picked up an item. Conditions have been added to these scripts to ensure that their commands are only output one time.
- A line has been added to the main quest script that will remove the quest item status from the Mysterious Book upon quest completion. So if you pick it up over the course of the mod, you won't be stuck with the thing forever when the quest is over.
- If you keep up with xenogearslucas lore, you'll know I don't like adding things to Oblivion from games I haven't played (I made a whole mod dedicated to this: MOO - Non-Elder Scrolls Franchise Recolors). It turns out the the "Paladin Armor" in GATES TO AESGAARD - Episode Two was taken from pale_riders Paladin Equipment, which is a remake of armor from Gothic 2. In an attempt to make it no longer look like Gothic 2 cosplayers are hanging out in an Oblivion horror mod, I have recolored the armor dark grey, recolored the red bits blue, and deleted the chain mail flap off the back of the helmet. I also blacked out the inside of the helmet and set it to take up the "head" slot, because helmets like this look incredibly goofy with your character's stupid eyes peeking out of the visor. A black interior looks cooler, and when enemies wear the helmet they look mysterious. Also, for who knows what reason, the record for the female version of the greaves originally lead to the vanilla steel greaves location. Now, when females wear the Paladin greaves, the actual Paladin greaves model will show up on the character.
- Any other unnamed creatures have been given names. Firedemon01 is now called "Fire Devil". Firedemon02 is now called "Flame Devil". Burningwoolf
and woolfflame are now called "Flame Wolf". Skeletons found throughout the environment for decoration are now called "Skeleton", like in vanilla Oblivion. Corpses found throughout the environment for decoration are now called "Corpse", like in vanilla Oblivion.
